I am new to rod building. I want to use quality products and make nice rods, but am not apposed to a "good deal" if it will still produce quality. I am using seeker blanks, and fuji guides, rod bond U-40, Thread master, and gudderbrod thread. Here is the question... I was surfing te internet @#$%& sight and I sea Madierra thread for sale and it is listed as rod building supplies.

I'm about to build my first rod in 10 years, so I'm not up to speed on the latest materials or technology. I keep seeing this embroidery thread for sale, and they suggest that it can be used to wrap rod guides. My question is, can this stuff be any good? I used gudbrod in the past, are there any differences?

i just started doing this a couple months ago and i've been progressively trying more time consuming butt wraps and have a few questions 1. when doing a 4 axis wrap do you guys just mark your centers for your first cross?or do ya'll mark the center of the blank all the way down for every axis to make sure you cross in the exact center every time? 2. what type of pencil do most use? i have

I did a quick search on this and saw nothing, so excuse me if this has been asked before. I'm thinking I might do some weaves of letters on my next couple builds and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using cross stitch threads. My wife has done cross stitching in the past and has a million (more or less) colors to choose from. I'm thinking of using them just for the lettering.

I started a rod today with Madeira Thread. This is my first experience with this thread. I found this thread very!! difficult to work with on a butt wrap. It does not like to be burnished. I found thread tension to be difficult to adjust to get compact wraps. I want to make weave on the butt wrap. Is there any tricks or suggestion as to how to work with this thread? Are the difficulties I

Aloha All, Are there any other alternatives to Maderia poly 40 wt. Thread. I will mostly be using them for butwrapps not on the guides. I spoke to a sweing store here who carries the mad deer and she said that she may have other poly type thread to suggest. Its supposed to be thicker so I am assuming easier to use. I guess I'm asking ,why maderia.? What qualities seperate it from the ot

I have some coats and clark 40wght rayon thread for fly tying. I was wondering if I could use this to wrap the guides on a Panfishing rod. If Ican do I need to add CP to it before I epoxy. My guess is I do if I dont want the color to fade. Thanks again for the help. Mike P.

First off I would very much like to properly thank Raymond Adams for his great guide on trim wraps. It was long overdue and to be honest, I just found it in my spam email the other day. The result is very nice even though on some of the smaller guides, you almost need the dexterity of a surgeon to pull it off! Here is a pic of my first use of his technic. Now for the lesson...... TRYING to get over my hate of two-part epoxy finishes. Not having too much luck I am afraid. Just finished my first somewhat complicated wrap and decided to just go for it. Measured my epoxy, mixed it carefully, warmed it gently, applied it liberally and let her spin. The subject line says it all. Tried flaming the wraps to no avail....SIGH...Luckily it is one of my personal rods....and

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I have been checking out the Madeira threads and I noticed there are several types : Poly Variegateds.... Muted Soft Shades... Neon etc. etc. Could you tell me what Madeira thread type is used most of the time. I understand that Neon must be a very bright color. I do not know what variegated type would be. Also, does Madeira come

I came up with a nice wrap while playing with some of my wifes polyester emroidery thread and some Guderbrod gold metalic rod building thread. Has anyone here ever used this combination? Are there potential finish problems I should be aware of with these threads? I really like the effect and would like to use it on a rod somewhere down the road. I went ahead and coated the wrap in color prese

This may be a rookie question, but has anyone ever seen a butt wrap loosen after brushing on color preserver? I did a chevron wrap (my first butt wrap), which was wrapped tight (or so I thought). After lightly brushing on color preserver all the threads loosened. Luckily I was able to push them back in place, and I was able to save the wrap. Another thought: Is color preserver necessar

Hey gays and gals; I'm writing to find out about madeira 40wt. I heard that some people use this to weave. My questions are: What is it used for, is it wrap or weave, and can it be used for wraps. It is avalable is poly and rayon, which works best.

I have seen a lot of discussion about using Rayon threads for wraps and it is not good. I am well into building a rod using Rayon thread. It did have some bleeding of colors on some of the larger guides but the wraps on the tips worked out pretty well. In the process of re-doing some of the wraps now and have applied put two solid coats of CP and I'm ready to epoxy. Is this a hopeless cause

I did a search of this particular brand and there weren't many threads about this thread (pun intended). (http://www.rodbuilding.org/read.php?2,172040,172106) The reason I looked into this was because of its availability where I live and it was 100% polyester (Gutermann Sew-All thread) and they also have metallics. One thing about the metallics is that apparently Sulky and Gutermann have c

Been burned twice by this....first time was about 3 years ago when LS Supreme was the best thing since sliced bread, so I bought a QT. of it and of course it didn't set up. I got a batch containing two part A's (or B's) I forget, I threw the stuff out in the snow, I was so @#$%&. Around the same time Madeira is all the rage with the thread artists that are impressing the daylights out of me, u

I did a weave tonight using Sulky red and yellow thread and Madeira black thread as the background. When I put the CP on the weave the black color bled through. I am glad that it was not a very hard weave to do. Has anyone had that problem with Madeira black thread and Flex Coat CP?

I was wondering, for those of you who HAVE used Sulky thread before...does it work well? Can you ONLY use the metallics, or can you use the other colors as well. Have not tried it yet, but was wanting to. I will be wrapping a friend's rod and he really likes blue, grey and silver. So was wondering if I could use the blue and grey in the sulky or if you guys only use the metallics. Any info. would

Has anyone else had problems with using maderia thread when applying finish. I pack the threads as tight as I can and apply several coats of cp. When finish is applied the threads tend to move on me and I can not get them to lay together. Looks rather bad IMO. I know that Billy uses maderia alot and was wondering if you have had this problem also?

There has been a lot of talk recently about these brands of threads and that one can go into their local sewing/fabric store to buy them. My question is, which ones work well for wrapping guides? Can you just go pick one of the shelf and use it? Or do each one of these brands have specific products that will work for rod building? Thanks for the help.

most of you will remember the saga Finally got a buttwrap done with the 40wt maderia rayon from the uk.. as you will all remember we had a lot of confusion/discussion on the suitability of the rayons for rod building.. Well.... They are very smooth threads (almost silky to the touch) The lighter colours do need a sealer/colour preserve on.The darker colours and metallics dont need an
