Hi All,
I mentioned I would do some testing of this Salus aka Athem thread and it really looks to be good stuff to me so far. Barring the rainy days although from what I know rainy or over cast days have a higher UV rating the colors are holding up well. Okay it's only been a week or two but I'm just about sold. I'll post pictures after some more time has progressed. Any suggestions as just how

123. Salus Thread?
Hi Folks,
My Mom has gotten into embrodery in a big way I mean the full on digital machine and all. She has shopped around for threads and has come up with a company called Salus. She had a couple of the color chart gigs sent to me and this thread looks very nice. Between the Rayons and the Ameth Polyesters there is just about every color in the rainbow.
My questions would be,
Has anyone used

128. New Wrapping Thread
I went to a Jo Anns sewing center yesterday to get some Madeira thread. This particular store doesn't sell it. So I found some Coats & Clark Trilobal Polyester 40 wt. I bought a spool and have taken it home. Did a wrap on a scrap piece, put 2 coats of CP and applied FC HB this morning. Does anyone have any experience with this thread? This particular store is offering 75% off. Will let you k

Are Sulky, Madiera, Krenick threads suitable for guide wraps or are they only for decorative wraps? The colors and metallics offered by these companies are astounding, but I worry about their strength. Would I need to underwrap and use these on top, or use two layers of these threads if I choose to go with them for guide wraps? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

130. Sulky to Maderia?
Hello all. I have done a search for this info but come up empty handed. I am looking for some sort of conversion chart for the color numbers for Sulky to Maderia or vise versa. I thought I saw someone post it here about a year or so ago but I cant find it.
Thanks for your help.

131. Gutermann Thread
I just picked up some gutermann thread from Jo-Ann Fabrics as all of their thread is half off right now.
Has anyone used this for wrapping eyes? It says it is 100% Viscose. I am new ot the rod building and really like being able to see the colors before i buy. I was just wondering if this would be ok for rod building?

Need to match some wrap on a couple of older rods. Looking for a two-tone black and blue that was sold in the early 80s. I see that Gudebrod has brought that line back, called the Two-Tone Classic Twist but they don't seem to have black and blue. Preferably in NCP D or C
Also looking for the really old multicolor "Variegated" (sp?) in D or E for long cane surf rods. Need to re-do so

133. Mettler Thread
I found a fabric store in a town that I visit fairly often that carries Mettler Polysheen. I did a search for Mettler thread here and what I found was kinda limited. How does this thread stack up? I have only used Gudebrod and some Sulky Rayon(not a wrapping friendly product), I have not used Madeira or any other threads so when folks compare it Madeira it doesn't do much for me.

Does anyone make a blue & black twist trimar-like thread? It does not necessarily need to be metalic like trimar, just a two colored twist. Anyone?
Thanks,
Tim

I saw a sale available for some Madeira Rayon No.40. Is there a difference between that and the Polyneon? I did a search and found lots of info. on the Polyneon but not on the Rayon. Maybe that's my answer. Any help would be appreciated before I make a mistake. Thanks Scott

136. Flocking Colors
I want to make mention to those of you who are buying flock from Donjer, that the special nylon fibers which are recommended for use on fishing rod grips only comes in a limited number of colors. If you simply go through their color chart and start ordering a bunch of colors, you'll probably get the standard rayon flock which is their primary product and used for the furniture and craft industri

137. Good Flocking
I tried my first flocking today. The results were great. I bought the kit from Donjer and added the extra expense for the air gun. Once you try this the first time you'll get hooked. THe air gun is worth it. This process was easy and really COOL to do. I read the article again from the RodMaker Mag and the process is foolproof.
I have one question. When I received the material it was the Rayo

138. Threads
I'm looking for some new thread colors. I know that sulky and maderia are used. I only find rayon at the couple of sewing shops. Is rayon to be used? Does anyone know where you can see the proper threads that sulky and maderia offer? Thanks for any help. I don't think I spell maderia correctly.
If first you don't succeed, go to rodbuilding.org.

141. Flocking Trouble
Last evening I noticed that the flocking fibers were coming off of a handle that I had flocked last Sunday afternoon. Upon further inspection I found that the adhesive was still "tacky" and had not set up hard over the entire cork handle & foregrip. I previously sealed the handle with U40 Cork Seal 3-4 days in advance and it had dried as usual. I was able to remove all of the adhes

142. Sulky Rayon
I have been using Sulky metallics for a few years and really like it. Recently, I have used Sulky rayon 40 on a couple of rods and really like it (337 colors and readily available). I'm curious how many of you have tried it and have you found any drawbacks to it. I use CP so possible problems with coatings shouldn't be a problem.

Okay, lets try this again. Sorry about not reading the rules more carefully. Also forgive me if I do not repeat the other post word for wrord, I will try to get all the stuff in this post that I can remember.
I started building rods a year and a half ago, december 2003 I believe it was. All the rods that I had built up until my last one had been fly rods. I never really did any decorative

My Cousin gave me this really old 7 foot medium action rod this weekend to refurbish. I believe it is fiberglass and a sort of Pumkin orange. It is the strangest colour you can imagine and I think that is partly why he likes it so much. Anyway I have been stripping off the old guides which have been wrapped with a garnet coloured thread wrap and a underwrap of white, which is not even thread b

146. Thread Options
Being new to the craft, I am sitting here watching my second rod dry with the final coat of epoxy, I am wondering about thread options. I used Gudebrod threads for my first two rods. The normal nylon thead worked very well and I was quite pleased. I wasn't overly thrilled with the HT metalic thread I chose for trim. It looks very nice in thin (3-5 wrap) accents, but I wasn't impressed if the

I have a chesnut colored blank (i.e. reddish brown) that I hope to wrap either Friday or Saturday but I am having a @#$%& of a time coming up with a color scheme. I thought about using a yellow/orange 30wt Rayon without color preserver for the tranparent thread effect.....Will be my first attempt.....But I hesitate.
Suggestions? Comments?

I might be wrong, have been before, probably will be again, but I believe I've read here that rayon thread should not be used for building rods. Merrick Tackle's catalog lists Robison-Anton rayon thread for rod building. My interest is because rayon comes in colors that just don't seem to be available in nylon. Has anyone used Robison-Anton rayon thread for wrapping guides, weaving, etc.?

I'm looking for a source for what's called "rayon twist" thread. It's a two-tone colored thread. I don't even know the brand name. I've tried some searches, but haven't had any luck.
