Thread Wraps Loosening After Adding Color Preserver?

This may be a rookie question, but has anyone ever seen a butt wrap loosen after brushing on color preserver?
I did a chevron wrap (my first butt wrap), which was wrapped tight (or so I thought). After lightly brushing on color preserver all the threads loosened. Luckily I was able to push them back in place, and I was able to save the wrap. Another thought: Is color preserver necessary when using thread with color preservative? I have heard some people say yes, and some say no. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Re: Thread Wraps Loosening After Adding Color Preserver?

No thread has CP already added, but some thread (NCP) is opaque and doesn't require it in order to hold original color.
On butt wraps where you have so much thread, it will soak up enough that it tends to stretch or elongate a bit. That's where your looseness came from. What you have to do, is tack down the centers, corners and edges with drops of CP. Let that dry and then come back and add a full strength coat. ............ Check your thread...I had EXACTLY the same thing happen with Rayon thread. I cp all my wraps and had problems with all thread types getting loose on me. It was builder error on my part I have to admit. I was using too much CP and brushing it on. I now use the brush only to hold the cp and let the cp soak into the threads from the brush only enough to make he thread uniformly (wet). No brushing around.

When working with NCP thread I just use a coat of Permagloss to bind everything down and then apply finish over that about 2 days later. Works for me and no thread stretching. Re: Thread Wraps Loosening After Adding Color Preserver?

Leave one or both ends of the butt wrap uncut after binding down the butt wrap. Use a narrower band than usual. Apply you cp then if needed tug on the long uncut tag ends and tighten the butt wrap to get rid of loose threads. THEN wrap the longer bind down wrap as usual. Caeful that you don't pull too hard and yank thread from the other end.

Proper dotting at crossings with CP will help with threads coming loose when wet. Other things to consider. You did not show us a picture or describe the type of wrap and thread used. Some threads will lengthen more than others when wet. The A metallics will really soften and stretch a lot more than regular nylon rod wrapping thread due to the thinner internal core. The number of crossings and distance between the crossings have a lot of control over stretch. Adding an additional axis will do a lot to help threads stay in place. A few things that may help in addition to the ones listed above are increase number of crossings by adding additional axis, shorten the distance between centers, minimize band width and mix nylon and metallics thoughtfully. I am assuming you are doing a simple type of cross wrap and not a closed one or weave.

NCP threads, rayons, and some mettallics have the tendency to "blow up" or expand when you add CP, especially a water based CP. I hate any and all Rayons, and when using an NCP thread, I'll use a stronger tension then I would with a traditional nylon...knowing that it has a potential for expanding.
Like Bill said "mix nylons and metallics thoughtfully" as will mixing NCP's with nylons...a tight nylon will keep an NCP or a loose metallic in its place, without the need for tacking down threads. Mike NERB that types with a bar of Ivory soap in his mouth. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
