Hi All, I was at a sewing store today and found a really nice thread. It's a #122 SS rayon 40wt. My questions are, can you use Rayon and is 40wt to small? I was able to break the thread very easily. It wrapped nicely on my blank though. I want to use this on a casting rod. Thanks Chris

As I am just starting to build rods I got some old ones to practice wrapping on and just used sewing thread for practice. The thing is they look really good!Is there any reason that I should buy special thread and are there any downfalls to using normal sewing grade thread? Thanks in advance Andi

I bought some maderia thread from a local craft store. looked nice but after wrapping with it I am finding tiny fuzzies and hairs sticking up in it. I did not really see this until after the finish was put on. now I will have to strip and rewrap. is it the thread or something I did? tension is through two discs on a flex coat hand wrapper. any ideas? this was my first time trying maderia.

Hello folks, I have been working on a surf rod and I chose to build a cord grip on the rod. I chose a forest green color to match the guide wraps. The grip looks nice and I decided to put a finish coat to make it easier to clean it and to prevent water intrusion. I decided to put a coat or two of color preserver to prevent darkening of the cord. The cord is a mixture of polypropylene and ray

I just did my top wrap of my Tiger wrap with the sacrifice thread, and when I epoxy it, there was all these hairs of the thread sticking out of the epoxy, like if the thread was caoming apart and left me all these nubs with hairs sticking out of them, it is my first coat so i will get rid of them on the next coat, has anyone had this happen to them with rayon?

Are there any alternatives to getting thread for wrapping other than the typical supply guys. I didnt know if thread from a place like walmart would work. It would be nice to have a place you could run to in an emergency or additional options. Thanks

Does Thread for a freshwater rod have to be nylon or can I use a Polyester thread? Has anyone use Polyester or silk thread from a sewing store? Will the finish damage Polyester or silk threads?

Anyone use Coat & Clark Rayon thread for wrapping? It's labled Machine Embroidery #S963 and looks alot like nylon rod wrapping thread. Its shinney without any fuzies. I'm needing it for a small decorative wrap at my tip top. It will not be used to afix a guide to the rod or any other stress situation. I assume I would use color preserver?

I know that garnet Gudebrod w/color preserver looks like anodized red aluminum when finished, but what color thread do I want to match an anodized blue reel? No underwraps or metallics please.

Hey Guys. I realise this question has probably been asked a million times. Tried a few searches with no luck. Building a 80lb tuna stick with roller guides. I would like to put one wrap of underlay and one wrap over the guides. What thread sizes would you recommend for the underlay and overlay? Thanks for your help. Paul.

I need to find a good blue variegated thread. I used the Sulky on a wrap but like a fool I didn't check to see if it was Rayon, so it shrunk after I added CP. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am working on a Tiger for between my split grip and want something that looks unique.

Guys I have a young lady that has ordered a rod and brought me some ribbon, made of rayon, she wanted me to incorporate into the but wrap. Before I started looking to match some wrapping thread to the ribbon I thought I better ask the question here. Has anyone used Rayon before? Do you apply CP to it? Does it hold up well, i.e. fading etc..?

Hi Guys, Im hoping if you could help me out....... Im currently working on a popping rod. Its a two piece, and for the butt/fore grip I have inlaid yellow EVA rings (the rings have been cut from the Mudhole CM12, it is a round EVA grip) which have beed sandwiched between normal black EVA. For the rest of the rod, I have been looking for some thread that is similar in color and shade, and

I had a Marine call me today and wants me to try and build him 15 rods with the marine desert digital camo pattern on the blank. He travels the country helping out the injured Marines and has a boat wrapped with this camo and wants the rods to match. Does anyone know how I would go about getting this camo pattern put on some blanks? Thanks Bobby

I have a client who wants an X-Camo Rod from the Mudhole. He has requested Hunters Orange (Blaze Orange) for the guide wraps. I ordered what I thought was blaze orange. Upon receipt of the thread I have discovered it NOT to be what I wanted. More color issues. (see earlier post) Close but not it. I decided to go to an embroidery shop and see what my options were locally and also get a feel for th

If any of you folks were ever in doubt about the Maderia Poly Neon threads, don't be! This thread is fantastic to work with, has great color, and the quantity you get on a spool is great! Just thought I would throw that out to all of you... Happy wrapping!

I am searching for a very specific thread. Regular nylon preferably black single color. I have been led to believe that a rod wrapping thread exists either size 00 or A that has only two filaments. The size A nylon that I have has three - I have a few spools of old Classic Twist in Black and White that has only two main filaments one white and one black. This thread is a slightly s

So far the more I use this thread the more I like it! I picked up a bunch from Karen at Bingham, and it's really cool stuff, with color mixes ranging from classy and subtle, to bold and brassy. But - has anyone tried this stuff without CP yet? Wondering how good the color retention is. Thanks, Marc

Is a silk wrapped and epoxied guide any weaker than any other wrap? Would anyone be opposed to wrapping a 10-12wt salt flyrod with silk? I have never used silk and was just wondering.

Good afternoon all, I was out at a fabric store "surfing" for thread and came across Sulky Holoshimmer thread. This not really a thread, but a thin flat piece of foil with incredible reflective properties. I estimate that it is about 1/16" wide. I came home with four spools, green, Blue Turquoise, and mother of pearl. I tried wrapping it on a piece of rod blank and found the b

I have a question on guide wrapping materials. I am going to build a fly rod and was wondering what if any (other than cost) are the practical differences between silk and nylon. Secondly, is there a chart available that makes it easy to understand the size designations used in silk (i.e., #50, #100, 3/0, etc.) and that used for nylon, size A for example. Thanks Frank

If I understand it correctly, the thread we use to wrap a guide is primarily to hold the guide until the epoxy sets up. If that is the case then why is it not recommended to use thread one might find in a sewing shop?

I hae to ask. Ive been wrapppimg rods for aabout ten years now. My wife has taken me to a fabric store for years. my question: what is wrong with using nylon thread? # 69 nylon has the same qualities as the stuff that I buy specificly for rods. The only difference that I can see is the number of color selection that the fabric store has. Please, for disscusion, what is the difference?

Hi, Is it required to use specialized rod binding thread, or can any thread be used? I have seen some fantastic colours in a local craft shop made by Gudebrod, that don't seem to be available in rod building spools. Thanks, Richard

Just to satisfy some personal curiousity, does anyone know why the shaft or tube used to build a rod on is called a "blank?" Why not shaft, tube, stick or something else. Does anyone know when the term "blank" came into widespread use?

Alright, Sorry for being needy on the info this morning. I grabbed a bunch of stuff for a cosmetic coverup this morning, didn't have time to get the rod take it home and fix it as it's needed for a gift on wednesday. Due to the blemish on the split section of the grip, this rod was heavily discounted, I was asked by a bud if it could be covered up, nothing wrong with the rod. I commute 40 mile
