Jeff Andrews blanks are very hard to get, if you are able to find them at all. He make blanks very infrequently and I haven't seen any "new" ones for quite some time now. Talon, CTS, and Island Rod Wrap are just a few of the blanks in demand for Ulua fishing at the moment.
As for the stainless butt caps, If you PM me I can send you the numbers of all the rod shops here that carry t

I've also built whipping rods on many different salmon/steelhead blanks. If rod is to be used for whipping at night, then these are the way to go. You should be able to find lots of blanks to fit your requirements. Blanks with the 1084 thru 1086 type designations should fit your criteria. Just look for those with "fast" action designations and the appropriate line/lure ratings. Rai

I've used the Rainshadow Hot Shot blanks and extended them up to 10.5 feet. Great whipping rods. If I remember correctly they were the 1023 and 1025 blanks. I use them to freeline oama too.

My titanium framed cermets have lasted since around the time since braided line started to the present. Have caught soooo many fishes with that rod and NO wear.........................not a single thing to complain about except for a couple of bent frames which i promptly bent back into shape. BTW...I bent the frames taking the rod out of a rod case.

I have made rods with both up and down locking positions. One thing I have found out is that if you plan on using a Breakaway Cannon casting aid on your spinning rod its much better to have the seat mounted in the uplocking position. If in the downlocking position, you will have to remove the casting aid every time you want to take off the reel because the casting aid is quite often attached ov

One thing that I have come across is that when mounting the reel seat with the threads "up", if you are using a casting aid for spinning reels, it gets in the way of mounting the casting aid in a semi permanant position. You would need to remove the casting aid to unscrew the locking nut on the reel seat to remove the reel. Not really pertinent to the topic but a heads up for those wh

When I wrap rods this length, running guide sizes depend on line used. For extra heavy duty rods I use size 12-16 running guides when using 65-150lb braid. For the particular blank you will be using, I would use size 7-8 single foot fly guides for the running guides and then use the formula for the new guide concept set-up to determine the other guides from the reel spool to the intersecting po

70. Re: Rod Wrapper
When I started wrapping in the early 80's I wrapped on my legs by hand. That got really old FAST, being the rods I wrap are usually 9' and longer. In a couple of months I moved UP to cardboard boxes with V's cut in them. After a few more months I graduated to the FlexCoat hand wrapper which I still have and use for wrapping delicate tip areas. Then in maybe 87' or 88' (around there) I bought

Here in Hawaii some people make their own titanium wire guides and use them for extra heavy slide-baiting for huge jacks from rocky cliff and also shore areas. They have a jig which they coil the wire around several times and create feet on each end. These guides are used with mono from 60-100lb test. They are referred to as "Hilo' (he low) guides. I haven't seen them used for smaller ap

All my Fuji titanium tips that have been in use for many years in the Hawaiian salt air are in as perfect shape as the first day I got them. Same for my titanium guides except for the ones I bent. Some of the "titanium finished/coated" tips and guides from another manufacturer do look like that though.

Just finished a 11 1/2' older Fenwick HMG rod. Using a Daiwa 3500 my guide sizes went 25-12-6(11 of them). I am casting with 14lb Fireline and 2 ounce lead constantly in the 100-110 yard range on the test field. Slightly shorter distances on the beach during actual fishing. The guides are Fuji titanium single foots with the choke/running guides being TSG fly guides. I had to use a 7 ring tip

Aloha to the Batsons. I use your rod blanks but not your components. I have always (20 years) used Fuji components because their products always met MY needs. The other major component suppliers products that I tried were really shoddy compared to Fuji products. I stopped using Fuji stainless framed guides because they would always rust on me in a few years and started using titanium framed on

I have built and regularly use a 14 1/2' rod from Anglers Workshop. It's moderately fast tapered and I usually throw 2-3oz leads with 15-30lb powerpro. My rod is setup with 14 guides and size 8 tip. This rod is setup New Cocept style with 12 size 8 TSVLG running guides. The stripper guide is a size 25 TSVLG and the next guide is a size 12 TSVLG. I'm not the best caster in the world but can ca

Aloha. Is using an airbrush to paint large, long, surf blanks a feesable way to do the job? Or will buying a auto paint set-up (compresser, spray gun, etc.) be that much better? Mahalo for your responses.

If you want to remove the reelseat, cut a groove along the length of the reelseat with a dremel cutting disc-making sure not to cut thru to the blank-and insert a thick slotted screwdriver into the groove and split the reelseat open. Remove reelseat from the blank and start rebuilding or removing your grip.

I have extended blanks in the past both permenantly and as a 3 piece rod. On permenantly joined rods I use a second blank of the same series and use the butt to extend the blank to the desired length. This also leaves you with an extra tip for backup. Fourtunately the reelseat has always ended up where the blanks join so that is used as a reinforcement. Sometimes trimming is needed. These were

My Outcast and BigCatch rod blanks from Korea/China? come with a chrome looking piece at the female end of the ferrules. Up to about 1/2" long on ultra heavy duty surf rod blanks. No reports of shearing that I'm aware of. Here in Hawaii these rods are ABUSED.

Marc. Fishing here in Hawaii salt water conditions, Hardloys and Titanium coated framed guides haven't withstood the rigors of fishing here. Usually the frames corrode and snap, albeit after 5 years. Fuji titaniums in both cermet and SIC no problems except for user induced problems such as dropping pole over the cliff and the occasional bent frame. Bent frames are bent back into shape, no pro

In my 1977 Fenwick Rod Builder's Blank Catalog it has the following info about the SC 622. It's a spin cast blank (SC) 60 1/2" fast action blank. Medium Light power. 3/8-5/8 oz lure weight. .516 Butt Size. 33/64 Butt Ferrule size. 5.5 tip size. 1 1/4oz blank weight. Couldn't locate any info in my catalogs back to 1967 about the other rod. Take two reels with the same diameter spools and the one with the taller spool should cast farther. For example an older green Penn verses the newer Daiwa Emblem Pro. Similar diameters but different spool heights.

Yes. Fly rods blanks in the 10-14wt range can be made into whipping rods but most users prefer a faster taper than fly rods offer. You want to turn the fish before they head into the reef. I have seen "pupule" persons use mooching rods on the cliffs for smaller game. It's a struggle bringing them up with those rods.

Maybe the halalu/akule in the channel at Ala Moana. Too far out for the normal whipping rods. Sounds too ultralite for papio unless he's a super sportsman.

There are many types of "whipping rods" in Hawaii. Many times "whipping rods" refer to rods 5 1/2-7 1/2 feet rated up to 10lb test line. Lure weights would be 1/4-3/4 oz. These rods are usually used to catch reef fishes and others such as akule(big eyed scad), opelu(mackeral), and papio(jack crevalle spp.) from shore. When fishing cliff areas longer salmon steelhead rods ar
