I just built a 6’6" Casting rod for a friend and did the Roberts wrap on the rod. It took 4 guides to make the wrap to the bottom. He is using braided line with the Rod and says that the line is fowling in the guides and is not casting very well. The first 4 guide I used were Fuji GSLVG 12, 10, 8 and another 8. Are these guide the right guides to use for the wrap? Or should I have used gu

Hello; Where do you suggest placing the guides according to spine in SaltWater FlyBlanks? That is Heavy wind & Big Flies are important. Thanks!

I assume many of you may allready know what i am talking about. Sage Blanks have white dots to indicate the "Straightest Visual line" on the "STICK". My questions are: Is it the spine they mark? If so, Where to wrap the guides? That is on the same side of the dots or thexact opposite, the back? Just wrapping XP series, for lake fishing where long casting is the Big Issue! Than

I was reading an article at Mudhole.com about how to build custom rods. I understood a lot of the process, but I have a few questions. If I was putting guides on a casting rod, would the guides go on top or on the bottom of the spine? 2. Also, it said that you need to smooth out the feet of the guide so they want crack. What is that all about? Thanks for the info. Jim

Here I sit with a huge pile of familiar looking components (blank, guides, reel seats, cork, whatnot) and I've read a huge quantity of literature on how to build a fishing rod but I've never actually done it. I intend to build a 6'6" MLF spinning rod (St Croix SCiii 3S66MLF) for drop-shotting first (actually after some practicing of techniques on a few $10 blanks) and I know I must start wi

Just a question about spine finding on Cape Fear blanks. I am very close to ordering one to see how they are. And as I was wondering, they have six sides, is there a spine to be found on these blanks? Anthony Rossillo

Ok guy's, I did a search and found a little information. How does the dual helix effect the spline? Also, how is the quality of G USA compared to say a St.Croix or Loomis ( Loomis I think is unfair since their quality has been noted as slipping lately) but I think you hear what I am getting at since these blanks carry a pretty stiff list price. I am really interested in the DHX series for BAS

Hi all, I have been trying to absorb as much info as possible from this great forum for the last few weeks. I am about to attempt my first two rods. Both for spinning, one for me personally (Loomis GL3) and one as a gift (Cabelas Fish Eagle). I just recieved the "Kits" from Cabelas and have inspected what I have to work with. Here are a few questions that I have for you all... 1) W

I am just getting started in rod building so please bear with me. I am starting with cheap blanks to develop ability, but I have a question. With all the concern with twist, guide placement, and spine I would like to eventually try to build a rod that is like a revolver. This is a casting rod where the guides begin on top but "revolve" in a half twist to the tip where the last guide an

woah nelly! ! ! After recieving my latest edition of RodMaker and quickly jumping into reading it, I found my world of knowledge (as limited as it may be) about rod spines turned upside down. I read the first section in the Q&A portion of the magazine and was baffled by the answer, particularly one statement: "...the spine does not determine whether or not the blank will twist under lo

Hello, I am fairly new to rodbuilding.I also get a great amount of satisfaction out of building a rod as I'm sure all of you do.Great therapy!I also want to do the best I can to build a rod as correctly as I can.Again, just like everbody else.My next rod is going to be a nine ft. graphite surf rod with concept guides(spinning rod).I was taught to place guides directly opposite effective

does anybody know who makes cabelas sli blanks ? before i found all these other suppliers here i purchesed a sli 9' 5# from cabelas for my first rod. I'm putting spinning eyes on it and will be using a spinning reel. we call these noodle rods here and we use them for steelheading. the reason i ask is i read some stuff about crooked loomis blanks and this cabelas blank is extreamly curved. Hi all, Need a little expert opinion/input please.... I made a 6' spinning rod from a GL2 Mag Bass blank for my personal use & snapped it on a hookset. The blank (MB783GL2), was actually 6'5" that I shortened. I used Fuji gold cermet guides & a tennessee graphite handle. The rod was awesome for fishing soft plastics for bass. I would like to make a replacement rod, BUT, honestly, I'

Can't seem to locate the Spine with the Apply pressure while holding blank at a 45 degree angle Method. The Blank is a Seeker Classic 665. Can you locate the spine by looking at the butt of the blank and seeing where the Fiberglass is built up the most?

This is probably a not-so new trick to the veterans but it is to me. I was gluing up a fly rod reelseat and foregrip and was eyeballing the alignment. It then popped into my head to use a string. I had already made several spine marks and taped down a string at the furthest mark then placed the other end of the string in the center of the reelseat. When all the marks lined up with the string the

I've got an olive green 2pc Rainshadow blank and spined both sections. When I put the sections together on the marks, the spine is now a few degrees to one side. Should I turn the butt section until the top section marks are in their orignal spined position? Thanks, Steve

How can I get in touch with Clemens Tackle? I have ordered a catalog from them but never recieved it. I have tried to call them for 3 days now, but always get a busy signal. The number I was trying was 610-395-5119. I was not sure about paying for a catalog to begin with. Now I am even a little more gun shy. If there is just some kind of misunderstanding or information entered wrong on my part, t

Well it´s been discussed that the ring position cannot possibly have anything to do with rod action, obviously , but i still see that manufacturers use "shallow angle" for medium action flyrods, and closer to 90 degrees in fast action rods. One question , is there a reason for this? Another question is, When to use eXtra Large Loops (tip-tops) and why? Thanks!

Does anybody have detailed intructions on the spiral wrap preprinted or on a web-site? I've read and re-read the past posts on this board and I'm ready to give it a shot., but I'd like to have the info in front of me when I get rolling. Now for the can of worms... I know I will have to test and play with spacing but I need a starting point. Can someone recommend spacing for a lamiglas GSH961M

Well, it's started and I feel like a little kid at Christmas! Today I received the last of the major components necessary to start building my first rod. Obviously at almost ten o'clock at night I had to DO something so I started by finding the spine to at least feel like I had started the process. I mean come on I had all those beautiful parts and I have to go to work tomorrow! With that sai

Good morning gents. Thanks for the help on my guide issue down below! I ended up with 12 guides vs 14. (8'6" SCIV 4wt) Any way I wrapped my tip section last night and I inspected my threads with a jewelers loupe (10x). What I noticed on this ST Croix Legend blank was that there were hundreds of small indented dash marks along the blank length wize noticable only with the loupe. I init

I did a static distibution test and came Up with 14 guides not including the tip top I went to town and left no geometry to speak of . St Croix lists 10 guides on their website but 14 seems to take most of the angles out . Im using fuji Titanim SICs. Have any of you set this blank up with Fuji single f

I wanted to run a question by the pros on this board. I have the opportunity to build on a pretty unique S-glass blank for crankbaits and spinnerbaits. It's extremely light and the action is moderate yet strong. I will be building it with Fuji Concept Alconites spiral wrapped. I've been reading alot about blank construction and the effective spine. My question is this. Would it make sense to bu

I have been searching for a blank to build a light power, extra fast action spinning rod. I looked at three blanks from two manufacturers before I found what I was looking for. My question arises from the varying amounts of "non-straightness" I saw. As these things frequently seem to work ou, the blank I like is the least straight. All of the blanks are first quality from manufactur

Thank you for your comments. But in bass fishing do you really feel rod fatigue fishing for bass with a conventional rod?? I can understand big saltwater fish but for a fish that fights maybe 2 minutes max?? I understand the no torque of the acid wrapped rods but am having a hard time justifying its uses and advantages in bass fishing. The comment about heat on the line with the line touchin
