Well Ive just begun to realize actually how much harder it is to do a spinning rod opposed to a fly rod. Can some one PLEASE lead me in the right drection...precautions, procedures. I would really like a reference book for this. I read an earlier post about how a custom rod can be matched to only one reel, whats that all about?? PLease reply or e-mail me!! In the mean while tight wraps, ~Do

I have only built one fly rod and one spinning rod. I am looking for a little guidance with this next rod. I have a St Croix 13' 7/8wt. SCII spey blank (2F1308). 1) Which side of the spine should the guides go on? The outside of the curve where the rod bends naturally or the inside of the curve? 2) Are the guides I have big enough for a spey rod? I have Hopkins & Holloway single foot guides

Any one know who makes the rods that Shimano sells? The reason I ask is because I have a couple of the TDR med. heavy and a couple of the triton extra heavy I bought from a charter guy at a somewhat fair price, about $10.00 a pole. They are in pretty rough shape. They need to be repainted, refinished, and new guides put on. Is it worth all the work and cost of paint, finish, and guides to do this

I called Clemen's to order a vertical spine finder. I told the person taking the order that I wanted to use it for building fly rods. She told me that it worked best for large diameter blanks, but did not work well for the smaller diameter fly rod blanks. She said she had problems seating the butt on the conical piece. Has anyone out there had the same experience? Thanks,

I have built several fly rods over the past few years and used L.A. Garcia's book as a guide. He says that the spine of a blank is where the "jump" occurs when rolling the blank. I have always tried to use this by locating exactly where the blank balances on the "jump" point. Recently, however, I have read some pieces that tell me the spine is where the blank naturally righ

I was wondering what peoples preferences are for mounting guides in relation to the spine on a fly rod. Is there a difference between a salt water and fresh water fly rod?

Hi all. I´m about to start building two bamboo rods. (2 piece, 7,6' , weight #4) Does this type of blanks have a spine? Built several graphite rods but this is the first with bamboo. If so, how do I go about to find it? Hmmmmmm.... Any advice would be highly appriciated so I dont have to redo the whole thing.... Kind regards: Goran.

I had a problem with color preserver early in my rodbuilding, attributed to rushing. (when the rod got wet, ALL the guides became loose) I have not used CP since, and have not had that problem since On a recent rod, I thought about Tom's words, "Color preserver is not the monster some try to make it", so on a whim, I applied Flex Coat color preserver. I let it dry for a day, and then

I hope this is not a question that has been covered before (I did a search of past posts) but is there any way to eliminate or "repair" slight warpage of a blank? Is a slightly warped blank a deal-breaker for a rod? Thanks in advance for anyone with knowledge on this subject/question.

I have searched and read most of the previous posts on finding the blank spine and constructing your own "spine finder". Now I am confused. I know what the spine is and the basic concept of rolling one end on the floor or a table and that it pops when you hit the spine. But from reading through previous threads is there a vertical and a horizontal spine? Is there more than one way

I am looking for a rod wrapper capable of handling a 10 or 11' rod blank. I have built a couple of rods with a friends equipment and am looking for a wrapper of my own. This is just a hobby not a business, so I am trying to avoid going for a mortgage. Thanks

In Ron Arras' and Curt Garfields' book The Ultimate Guide to Surfcasting pg. 53 states. "Guides on spinning rods should be on the spine and conventional casting rods work best with the guides mounted directly oppisite the spine" This book has a lot to do with distance casting. Does this apply to all surf poles or only distance casting, or am I just not reading it correctly. If someone h

I seem to have caught this rodmaking hobby (obsession) like a case of bad flu. Its all I think about and its starting to affect the family life and distract from energy at my real job. I am also getting more rods than I can ever use. It seems that the only solution would be to try and sell something at some point (I am definitely not good enough yet). However, with the component prices the wa

Good evening, let me start by thanking Tom Kirkman for introducing me to this site, many of my questions have been answered thanks to many of you. OK, lets begin. I purchased a used home made (custom) rod as a back up (broke the tip off my sage VPS 490), now I want to build my own fly rod, a Sage VPS Lite 379-3. Looking at how the custom rod was built I noticed that the spine (or spline) is of

I'm building an 8' casting rod with the concept guides. This is the first time I've used these things. I've got the handle on and am trying to set the spacing on the guides. I keep testing the spacing by running the line through and bending just past 90 degrees. The end sectoin ( top third) needs many more guides than I think looks right. I'm going to end up with 12 guides plus the tip to keep t

Just a recap on the Jan. 26th rod builder’s day held in Green Bay Wisconsin. We had about 40 rod builders attend throughout the day. There were demonstrations on feather inlays, blank repairs, trim wraps, painting rod blanks, turning cork handles, making decals, wooden and antler inserts, and building rod turning machines. A local builder brought in about a dozen rods to show some examples of d

I'm making an 8' casting rod for carolina rigs and bass fishing. I'm using the concept guides and would like some input on placing the guides on the inside on the bend, outside, or 90 degrees. I have placed most of my guides on the outside of the bend in the past. I've read many post on this in the past but am still pretty confused as to the advantages of each. I don't know if you call the inside

I just dropped a 1/2 finished blank on a marble and found that it gave me a different spine than the spine I found with the old hand roll method. Upon further investigation, I found that I got the new spine by pressuring the tip while I got the old spine by pressuring about 1/4 down the blank. I assume I should use the spine found by pressuring the tip,==> does anyone have any tips for remov

I would like to learn more about rod blanks and guides. What the different modules (spelling?) ratings mean and how this effects the way the rod works. Also more information on guides, single foot and double foot, different materials used in constructions of the guides and what the pros and cons of each. I have found several sites with fair to good information but I was hoping someone might h

I decided to try a couple of Rainshadow blanks a while back. Both of them looked great. One of them is a ISB781 spining/casting blank. When I spined it I found two spines 180 degrees apart. One spine was a little stronger than the other. Normally I would have just started building it but curisoity got the best of me so I got out the calipers and measured the wall thickness at the butt. Does anyone have any good techniques for rod dampening like Orvis or East Branch was doing? And are the techniques worth the extra effort? I was thinking of glueing a thin sheet of sorbothane type rubber to the blank under the grip. The east branch rods looked like they used some type of ethafoam stuffed into the inside of the blank. Where would one stuff the foam? just at or below the nodal poi

I just went to put my guides in place on a rod blank and all the carefully measured and plotted marks I had put there for the guides are gone! Guess I wiped them off with my hands or something. Which begs this question/What do you use to mark your blank with? I know this must vary with all the various blank surfaces and finishes out there now but what type of writing instruments do you guys us

Read your article in the last issue about equal angle placement. The Nov.-Dec. issue of Rod Crafters also had an article on quide placement. Is there realy that much difference between the two methods! Rod Crafter method seems easier to perform, and you still could incorporate the use of a spine finder. What am I missing between the two methods.
