We aren't talking about the spine here - in fact if you use the straightest axis, the spine is not a consideration. ...........

It's important to get them straight at the outset. The first few threads determine how straight the finished wrap is going to be. I'd bet anything, that your centers are already off by the time you've put down a couple threads. Try this - after you make your initial lay out and have put down just a few threads, use a straightedge to make sure the centers on both sides of the rod are perfectly

With the blank in that particular orientation, the rod is in the normal fishing position. So on casting rods the guides are on top while spinning and fly rods have the guides on the bottom. ...................

I was under the impression that he was referring to the fish pulling the line through the guides and bending the guides. I don't see how that can happen (it may indeed happen - I just can't visualize how with the guides on the underside of the rod). .................

Something isn't adding up here - if these guides are on the bottom of the rod, the line will pull downwards, which is not going to bend the guides fore and aft. Generally, such failures only occur when single foot guides are used on used on top of the rod, and then only in situations where you have a fairly high frame guide. In that scenario the rings do tend to get bent down toward the rod blank

Build on which axis? The way the term is used there are 360 of them on a rod blank. I think you may be referring to building on the straightest axis, which is what that particular article concerns. .........

"On the axis" and "Straightest axis" are not exactly the same thing. If you build on the straightest axis you are indeed building on an axis, but not necessarily vice versa. These terms aren't used perfectly in rod building but generally when you hear somebody talk about "axis" in respect to fishing rods they're breaking down each point of degree of the blank's circu

If you were to place a guide at every 5 inch interval along your rod, you'd find that it casts okay. Your distance would likely be more than enough for what is required in many types of fishing and you'd certainly have adequate stress distribution for the rod blank. Beyond that point, additional time and effort tweaking your guides will increase your casting distance and overall rod performanc

Fly rods are built just like any other rod. Guides are sized the same way - use the smallest and lightest guides that will still pass the line and any required connections. There will be a line to leader knot, loop, splice, etc. that will have to be accommodated. Make sure your size choice will handle this. You really need to find out what he's going to be fishing for. The frames in that photo are having no effect on anything, other than holding the rings. If your line is hitting the frame, you have the guide in the wrong location. I realize that with the low riders and braid, you have a different scenario. ................

We have now distributed over 49,900 of these decals. Granted, some builders have 2 or 3 each (most only got the one in Volume 11 #4), but that still puts the number of users in the tens of thousands. I hadn't planned to print any more but most likely I'll do another 10,000 and continue sending them with back issue orders. The program has been tremendously successful. ..............

Yes, but generally you have to mark where they go before you take it apart. Obviously, you didn't have that option in this case. I think if you look at the inside pieces you'll see that the slots are not in the same place on all 3. You're going to have to get that combination correct in order to have them all move to the center in the same place. ................

Novelty, really. The line doesn't really care about anything other than the ring. However, some have stated that with certain reels and lines the line tends to hit the frame unless the guide is turned so the flat side of the frame faces the reel. I haven't run into this personally, but I'll assume it has happened to somebody. ................

Let's review - Every offer I have made for the free decal has included the stipulation that you must provide a "5x7 inch SASE." The decals are 5 inches in diameter, your letter sized envelope has a maximum height of 4 inches. If you know of a way to put a 5 inch diameter decal into a 4 inch tall envelope without folding it, I'm all ears. When I receive a regular sized letter envelo

The problem with very lightweight lathes is that they won't operate as smoothly nor seem to allow for as effortless cutting and shaping as heavier models do. What you might want to look into, is some sort of portable lathe bench, such as the various ones we've outlined in RodMaker over the years. I currently have a OneWay Lathe and bench that combined weigh about 400 lbs, but with the "wh

Such coatings aren't going to shield the rod from damaging impacts. In the thickness we'd be talking about, none of them are nearly as hard as the blank itself. ...........

The DPSD will be the most functional seat you've ever used on a fly rod. As you mentioned, you can skeletonize it and make up your own barrel insert if you want a different look. The other parts will work. The running guides will be a bit large, but they'll work if you just want to use parts at hand. .................

You can make your own in minutes, if you want. It's a very simple procedure and you can make such tubing in any diameter you want. The cost is maybe a buck a foot. Other than that, you can do a search for tubing suppliers. It's readily available, but somewhat expensive. ...........
