Birch Bark

OK now is the perfect time for me to ask. I just finished putting a bunch of birch bark in between boards to make it flat. I have a question. It seems that birch has two layers of bark. The first would be the white stuff on the outside, and the second would be the thicker stuff underneath. Should I have tried to keep those layers together as I peeled it off the fallen tree? Is it a big deal if I didn't? I appreciate any input.

If you read the article in RodMaker, then you know that the white layer should be removed before you start glueing up the bark squares.

Tom, is right on! The white layer will only give you trouble if you do not remove it before gluing up as it will delaminate very easily and create gaps that are unsightly and weak.
