I'd go smaller also if it's a small opening reel like a Zebco, but some of the large opening reels like the Abus may work better with the 10 and heavier line like 6 lb that may be on a wife/kids rod.

I'd try a #10 double foot and 5 #6 single foot ceramic fly guides plus tip top.

The Graphite USA F4910DHX or the DH models are some of the most durable blanks there is and they fish great. Another to look at would be the CTS or Dan Craft FT blanks. The GUSA rods have saved my bacon on a wilderness trips or tough conditions more than once..

Marblize, or metal flake it ala Putter. Or you can just buy a metallic silver painted Fuji seat from Merrick through one of the sponsors like FishSticks4U, Schneider's, Dan Craft and others I'm sure.

The people I had that were coming back with broken rods a pushing for more performance, I taught them what I knew about it, than let them roll their own. They are doing things I never thought of and wouldn't do to one of my rods , but it's on their nickel now and they are having a ball doing it. They do catch a lot of fish.

CTS is the way to go. I know of a 9 ft. 6 in., 7 piece, 7 wt blank that may work. Not a sponsor so e mail me if you don't know the one I'm thinking of.

A size 6 ceramic guide is about the same size as a #1, Size 7 ceramic a size #2, Size 8 a size #3, seeing a pattern?

The SHII 764 was by far the most popular of the bunch I believe. You need durability, if you can't feel a fish only 15 ft away you have a problem no rod will fix. I still use a Fenwick E-glass flipping stick and have no problem detecting the fish.

Don't remember Lamiglas ever having part numbers like that. All Star, Rainshadow and Pac Bay do however.

Tommy, I think it's a whole bunch easier to do it like the article in the library above, where you use a straight line through the reel's shaft under the spool to find the choke point and guide sizes. Math makes my head hurt, I like my results to be more visual, where the guide size/height/position is as simple and fast as I can make it.

Specs and price are on the Lamiglas site, Mudhole, Custom Tackle, and many others. 6 to 17 lb line, 1/8 to 5/8 lure weight if I remember right. Makes a good heavier line dropshot rod also.

Some blanks that I know have a soft enought tip, but the backbone you may be looking for. Don't pay any attention to the power rating from each manufacturer as they are arbitrary and not universally used industry wise. Neither are line ratings, but they seem closer from supplier to supplier. Lamiglas IMS 78 ML, There is a IMC version that is a bit stiffer/faster if needed. Have caught 25+ lb s

Todd, We need input, what are you fishing, hook size, line, etc. We need particulars to narrow our suggestions from the generalities you've seen so far. Once we lazer in on this thing we may also know where some good values are also.

Kyle, Yes, the ESH and XSH MT's are some of my favorites and I've fished them for many years. I too prefer the 8 ft 3 in thru 8 ft 9 in versions over the Bill Herzog designed longer blanks. Built all my dad's rods on the 8 ft 6 in MT Perigee versions when they were still available. Still fish the 8 ft 3 in version for old times sake as I started my steelhead/salmon fishing days as a youngster wi

Haven't tried Mark's blanks yet, but just about all our sponsors carry a 1141 of one brand or another and they all will work well with 4 to 6 lb test. That's exactly what they were designed for.

Fred your going a bit to large on the tip guides I think. A 4 wt should take 1/0 guides, maybe 2/0 easy. The ring size of a 6 ceramic is about a #1 wire.

Lee, guide spacing charts are on the Angler's Workshop site, St Croix site, Mudhole, etc. Remember these are just starting points. Finish with a static distribution test as done in the library article on this site.

Might look at the Rogue SU864-2, SM868-2 or anyones 2 pc. hot shot blank with the right lure/line rating you need.

Put it all together, than put some masking tape on the black parts to protect them and sand the cork to match up. It will accept a reel without it but you'll have a cork depression where the reel's foot has been.

Size it the same as you did the cork, it just takes longer. You can get it closer by drilling, but it's soft and easy to get off center and grabby of your drill bit if your not careful with the nylon/graphite material it's made of.

I'd look at the Lamiglas Certified Pro XSH 120 2MT. A much faster blank than most blanks in this catagory. It will also throw a little more weight than the upper limit would let you believe. They have this Mag Taper Medium 8 to 17 lb blank rated 1/4 to 5/8 but the 8 to 12 lb blank is rated 1/4 to 3/4 oz and the MH at 1 1/2 oz upper limit which seems wierd to me, I'd say it throws to 1 oz just fi

Keith, I think you'll find all kinds of info on these blanks/guides/grip length/lines maybe in the search function. I've fished the 7/8 and own a older 13 ft RX8 version and frankly they are as nice as that rod or for that matter Sage and others I've fished. I think they are right up there with the best. Another I've heard good things about but haven't tried are the Beulah blanks. I don't reme
