I am looking ot build a rod for spinner fishing. I went to alaska last year and going back next year I did a lot of spinner fishing with a 10'6" 8-17lb factory spinning rod the action was great for casting distance but I hated the handle and eventually cut 5" off the rear handle. I also noticed that I lost a lot of fish. I fish spinners here in the east for salmon and trout and I am used to fishing slower action rods without a problem but I believe the action of this rod was too soft to get a good hook set. I want the 10+ ' length (10,11,or 12)but I want a semi fast tip (not a real stiff rod but fast) rated for 8-17or 20 lb line. Any west coasters have a rod they really love for fishing silvers on spinners? I know batson has a great line of blanks but I don't have any experience with them.
The other thing I am looking at is using braided line. I don't have any real experience with braids so what type of guide insert should I typically use with a braid? Jason Henderson Re: Salmon spinner rod

I'd look at the Lamiglas Certified Pro XSH 120 2MT. A much faster blank than most blanks in this catagory. It will also throw a little more weight than the upper limit would let you believe. They have this Mag Taper Medium 8 to 17 lb blank rated 1/4 to 5/8 but the 8 to 12 lb blank is rated 1/4 to 3/4 oz and the MH at 1 1/2 oz upper limit which seems wierd to me, I'd say it throws to 1 oz just fine. I prefer the shorter stick for tossing spinners for fall kings and coho, but the 10 footer sounds like just the thing you're looking for. It was actually designed for fishing spoons for large steelhead. Re: Salmon spinner rod

Kyle,
Yes, the ESH and XSH MT's are some of my favorites and I've fished them for many years. I too prefer the 8 ft 3 in thru 8 ft 9 in versions over the Bill Herzog designed longer blanks. Built all my dad's rods on the 8 ft 6 in MT Perigee versions when they were still available. Still fish the 8 ft 3 in version for old times sake as I started my steelhead/salmon fishing days as a youngster with an 8 ft 3 in spinning glass rod.
