My second build will be a 5.5 Ul with trigger spincast reel for wife. Since i haven't built up a supply of guides yet, any advice sizes to start my supply, because this rod will not be the only ul with a trigger spincast that i will build. A few builds for nephews for xmas present. Thanks Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

I'd try a #10 double foot and 5 #6 single foot ceramic fly guides plus tip top. Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

second Spencer's suggestion. Order extra's and a few different sizes each time you order to build up a stock of supplies. Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

Mike,
I have read a few of your post on trigger spincast reels. Was wondereing is a #10 too small for a butt guide or is the #10 guide after the butt? Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

I'm in agreement with the other post except I personally would go with a smaller stripper guide. Look at the size hole the line is traveling through coming out of the spin cast reel. That is your restriction point, any guide larger then that is just wasted. The only reason for even going larger at all would be incase you replace the reel at a future date with one that might have a larger line guide.
If you really want to lighten the rod you can go much smaller with the rest o the guides also. Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

I'd go smaller also if it's a small opening reel like a Zebco, but some of the large opening reels like the Abus may work better with the 10 and heavier line like 6 lb that may be on a wife/kids rod. Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

Guys,
maybe I need to start drinking more but is not a trigger spincast reel hung below the handle just as a spinning reel would be? In that case wouldn't he want to utilize spinning guides BYAG or similar vice the double footed casting guides that have been recommended? If it is the case of spinning wouldn't he want to start out with something like a 16 or possibly 20? Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

Good question Thomas.
I assume "trigger" refers to the type of seat?? The type of spin/cast reel that is UNDER the rod is called the underspin design I think? Ya know what happens when we assume! Should have asked. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

Underspin may be the correct name but as the underspin lever
is somewhat like a trigger maybe we are ALL confused! lol!!!!!!!! Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

If you are using an under spin reel like this
[www.cabelas.com] I would use Batson M guides and measure the reel opening and start with that size and go down from there even with 10 lb test you could still use 4mm guides with no problem. I use down to 2mm guides with 10 lb test. If you are using spin cast reel like this [www.cabelas.com] I would follow the suggestions above. Re: Guides for Trigger Spincast

I usually build an under/spin rod like a normal spinning rod unless
the reel sits very close to the rod. Even then sometimes as you then have the option of using a spinning reel if you want. Especially if the rod is for a small kid who will eventually want to learn to use an open face reel. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it..
