121. Photo Board
I notice that in the last few days the large photos are going up again. Some as large as 2500 pixels. All is well?

I have only found a few places that use the Rodmaker cork scale but would agree that it is the ONLY way to know beforehand what you're getting.
Anybody call tell you that they're sending you FLOR grade but what does that really mean? There is definition as to what FLOR grade actually is, is there? Some say it's the best. So what? The best they have or the best available? What is THE BEST? If th

I just pull the thread until it feels right. How much is "right" well that's hard to say. But I think the word snug was used and that's how I'd describe it. Just snug. Once wrapped if you can't move the guide at all its way too tight. If you can shove it all over the place, it's too loose. Anywhere in between is going to be just about right.

There is never anything safer than a good, detailed set of instructions............. and the sense to read them!

Seen it on some rods. It is an acquired taste. Some think it looks cheap and crude. Others like it for the reasons stated. Ask some of the sponsors to the left. Some of them carry it.

Mine came a few days ago. The article on the rod rescue device saved me $200 today.

127. Re: skeleton seat ??
Not hard to make, just cut the seat in two. You can sand or file the remaining pieces flat. If you have a stationairy belt sander it will make quick work of the job.
I do not think you can get size 20 seats in pre formed skeletons.

My issue of Rodmaker came in mid-week. The first night I went down in the shop and cobbled together a rod rescue device of my own, pretty close to the one in the article. Put it in my 'loaner" rod and went to bed.
Dad-in-law called this morning, wanting to try fishing a local pond since the weather was warm enough through mid-day. Sure enough, on the second cast he stumbled and tossed the

You know that might be a good question to E-mail over to the folks at Rodmaker magazine. They would more than likely be the ones to know about that sort of thing, since they are the ones that mail the magazine and all.

130. Re: Snake Skin
Joe Emig wrote something on preparing and using snake skins in Rodmaker a few years ago. Might have been for seats, not sure. Technique is probably about the same.

Somebody on this very website once mentioned that beer is amber looking through a glass full of it. But spill some out on the floor or counter and it's clear as a bell! Has to do with the thickness you're looking through.

Use a high frame 20. Can't go wrong and it will allow you to move up to 6lb or 8lb later if you ever want to.

Flex Coat CP is hard to beat. There was an article in the Rodmaker magazine some years ago that spelled out what caused particles to suspend in CP and how to prevent it. Not sure I remember the cause or the solution but it's in there somewhere. Back in volume 4 or 5 I think.

There is no large or stiff spring. Just take out the triggerplate and let it drop. The spring is not stiff and won't fly across the room.

I've seen one or two out and around. Hope to see more as time progresses. It was a good idea. I'm flying mine on my work vehicle.

137. titebond and rust
Is anyone else here using Titebond carpenters glue for cork rings on a mandrel? I glued some up last week, turned them today and when I removed the cork grip the mandrel underneath is horribly rusted and pitted. This has never happened to me in many years of gluing rings with epoxy on mandrels. It must be the Titebond. Any ideas? I won't be using Titebond for this again. Costs too much to replac

Most of the power is in the butt section of these rods. So you might see a shorter and lighter rod that you might assume to be less powerful than the longer rods, but in effect it really does offer as much power as the longer ones. The Common Cents Measurements can't lie any more than a tape measure or weight scale can. So if the reading was accurate it is what it is.

Nice photos BTW.
Question- does abalone occur naturally in all those different colors or are those dyed or tinted somehow?

140. Re: Air Foam Grips
Have not actually seen them but I don't think they would really be any different than the lighter weight EVA we can already get. I've seen some that was awfully light, even airweight compared to cork.

Thanks for the info. One more, is it possible to get this same Live Bait action in an all graphite model?

142. Live Bait Rods
Without a huge dissertation on sensitivity what would I be looking for in a live bait rod that would keep the bait from tearing from the hook on the strike and be the most sensitive for bait watching? Would any soft power rod work as well for this? Specific blank models?
There is a brand of very inexpensive glass rods sold locally that many seem to favor for live bait fishing but I do not know

Shorter may be better for a kid. Just don't trim from the tip to get the length you need. the tip is where all the action is at in a live bait rod.

145. Glad to be home
After dallying at some other rod building forums I am very glad to be home. I had no idea how much uncivil behavior goes on elsewhere. I have seen this forum blasted on other forums, but I have never, never, never, seen any other forum blasted on this forum.
There is a reason why this site is #1 in traffic and has the best rod building information from the greatest variety of rod builders. We

I made a dryer box a few years back but only used it once or twice. Unless you work in a very cold place where you need to regulate the temperature while you are finishing, a drying box is really not needed.

148. Re: work area
Most of my assembly work is done standing up. Most of my wrapping work is done sitting down. I have two benches of different heights. If I were limited to just one, I'd make it a standing height bench and then use a high stool as mentioned for those times when I sit.

IMO it's better to put on one thick or wet coat and let it go at that.
