123. Custom Wood Handles
For those that build with wood handles, what do you prefer for a wood? What's the lightest, most functional, and yet still "good looking/feeling"? I prefer and use catalpa myself, as I like how it turns and its really light, and its what I'm most confortable with, but I'm very much a novice and I'd like to try something new for kicks...Thanks in adnvance for your thoughts!

When you said the gun room, I thought for sure you were going to describe something that looked like missile loading tubes like these

I rarely need to do anything more than to start reeling, or a slight tug, and dont let the line go slack, to get a good enough hook set when recreational fishing. The theatrics of the tournament bass fisherman may be more about getting the fish in quickly as it is about the "hook set".

I love it! Rod building and everthing that comes with it; and my latest 2 ventures, bamboo rods and kayak fishing, all under one roof! Umnn...does legacy paddlesports demo and sell hobie's? That would be awesome!

131. Re: Bamboo at ICRBE
I've been reading up on bamboo rod making for some time. Fascinating. I've been wanting to take a class. This just might be the ticket to to help me decide. Thanks Tom!

In addition to a lot of good points already made above, I like that when I use CP, that 'repairs' seem easier than they do when I dont use CP ; and that I can still get what seems to be a perfectly acceptable finish both cosmetically and functionally and structurally. I guess I'm still uncertain whether this is the CP, the finish, how I applied it, someth other ghost in the machine, or some com

Dont forget my new book concept, "A Rod Builders Guide to Debt Management and Divorce Settlement".
It will cost you about $50, but can save you hundreds of thousands.

The jig from Custom Tackle Supply, on the left, works great for this with the right spacer - which you'll have to make, but its easy.
Lamar Fishing, also on the left, makes a very nice exotic burl, and its available in 1/8" rings from at least one of the distributors - again, on the left.
Nothing left but good stuff.

1) Before you buy any of the aforementioned books, or videos, etc, I highly recommend the "Credit Card & Debt Management:" book, a step-by-step how-to guide for organizing and managing credit card dept. 2) If you are maried, you can probably save some time and a whole lot of mula now by calling 1-800-DIVORCE. 3)Good luck. 4) Seriously though, it doesnt have to be expensive. 5) Follo

After a bout of skin rash possiby associated with epoxies, I've been using PG exclusively for a finish and dont know why I didnt from the beginning. It's more durable, no mixing is required, has multiple uses, and I've come to prefer the look over epoxy. I do still CP the threads. Nothing better IMO.

I actually saw this from your posting on the engraving forum last week and was blown away by it then as well . As most of the engraving guys seemed more familiar with knives and such, I liked how you let them know otherwise when you said "...There is more to building a rod than you see at first glance...".

I've never seen anything on rod building on TV before, so thought this was cool. On Comcast on-demand, under sports>angling>versus I noticed a show on bamboo rod building, featuring the boo boys from sweetgrass rods. It was very well done I thought; and pretty neat, as I havent fished with a bamboo rod since I was a kid (wish I could find it) - I would love to learn how to build one for mys

I would order another and carefully ream to fit. I've tried building up the area to close the gap with thread and/or epoxy, but have never been satisfied so I dont bother anymore. Like guides and tip tops, everytime I bought what I think I need I also found myself buying a few sizes +/- from that until I built up a small inventory to fall back on when these events occur. So far I've been pretty l

This system sounded perfect for your brother. I am glad to have helped in some very small way. You're efforts to comfort your brother will not go un-noticed, I am sure, as I have gone gone thru similar.

Careful. You can run into the same problem, I think, with what is left of the gloomis super stickers being sold to custom builders as I reported here a few months ago. There are 2 problems. The flattened middle spacer isnt flush on some, and its not long enough for even some very small reel feet - if you put a fore grip on flush to the top of the threaded portion, you can end up not being able to

149. mandrels
Are the Lamar threaded wood turning mandrels just as effective for turning cork? Can I do without a regular mandrel If I have one of these wood turning mandrels? I cant imagine why I would need both, but figured I'd ask just in case. Thanks in advance.

Can anyone point me to a resource for fishing kayak info - frehswater ponds and lakes, mostly? Other than building a rod to match your quarry, I'm assuming kayakers also need to be concerned with rod length to maneuver around long kayaks, and maybe something special for a leash attachment?
