Knowing his stuff fairly well here in new england., I would say he's probably going to be more interested in the PRACTICAL application of rod building, and will probably highly "question" the bling (based on some posts on his forum, thread-art, etc is not well understood). Avoid @#$%&, and stick to facts, and you'll probably be ok. I doubt he'd warm-up to any kind of vegetable stick, br

On telescoping rods that have 3 or more sections, the guides seem to be placed at the top of the sections so they can collapse - not necessarily the optimum placement?

'There are limited and some recent postings on the subject. Is there anything more in-depth or 'official' in rodmaker on how to build telescoping rods? Seems relatively straightforward, but...

"...If you are committed to using the "simple spiral wrap" method...." What is this saying, exactly? I'm guessing from prior posts and similar recent experience (based on posts) that you are referring to using something closer to or exactly the same as the Forhan method? I cant seem to be able to wrap my mind around why...probably 'cause I didnt really understand the diffe

Is there a good list of questions to pose to the potential customer to help define the custom rod they are looking for you to build? I came up with the following real quick, but I'd love to see what others have come up with. Thanks in advance. Baseline questions - Answer as many as possible: Is this for freshwater or saltwater fishing, or both? What types of fish are typically targeted (

Are these the only handles available to the overseas these days that provide the multi-angle and 'depth' alignment that they are looking for? Or is it more than that? Whats the craze all about? Why isnt someone 'remaking' them?

For something a little more 'substantial' than rubberized cork or a rubber cap insert, cut off and attach with rodbond just the top of a Fuji BRC19 butt cap, cutting at the parting line using a parting tool on a lathe. It's one of my most used and favourite methods - a nice hybrid of rubber and cork that all my customers like as its durable, comfortable, and good loking; and this might work for y

I have a book on order. I hope it will answer the question. In the meantime, is .040 the minimum/safest thickness? Could .020 or .025 disc tags be used? Are they too thin? Smaller diameters are readily available, but they seem awful thin - but maybe not for the small stuff we're talking about for rod building? .

Re: "...This allows us to make sure an MB 661-1 IM blank made next year has the same characteristics as one made today. This is a wonderful if somewhat scary idea." LOL I love it! Thanks for adding CCS to your specs. I'll give these blanks a much closer look than I will other/cheaper blanks now, because of this; as it saves me both time and money to be able to dial in closer to w

Hi Tom, I have been very interested in building a bamboo rod and have done some work so far, but find a lot of the articles, books and videos available, from internet forums, etc simply fall short of what I need compared to the articles that I find in Rod Maker - I'm not sure if it's the writing styles, the depth of material, the ability to put it into laymans terms, or what...but they just fa

As you are a woodturner hobiest, I doubt a DVD on turning will give you much more. I think size, shape and the ergonimics are probably more important then. One of the rodmaker mags dealt with ergonomics quite well; and many of the back issues have different grip templates...it seems to me that there might have been one issue devoted to shapes, I dont recall. Anyway, I would try search the back is

Hi Alex, I had recently requested suggestions for the same info for myself, for kayak fishing in new england for stripers. Search and you'll see some of the great suggestions I got. I settled on a 7'6" "big show" castaway blank from swampland AND a 7'6" 12-25 lb lami (item t520-95) from mudhole. The castaway was much cheaper, and by all accounts so far is just as worthy. I

Huh. I recently received a couple of blanks. They were bubble wrapped and in those heavy black PVC tubes, and the tubes were taped at both ends with heavy duty fabric/tape. I had a hard time removing the tape, and yet one one end the tape was cut and lay flapping. If it was on the other end, the seats that were inside would have probably been lost. Because the rods were so well packed in bubble w

Are you saying the blank/adaptor is not epoxied to the grip, just held in by the adjustment screw/chuck? Why were they made this way? Were they meant to be interchangeable? Did they fail often, requiring this for ease of replacement? Just curious...

Thanks for the great replies. I figured on the shorter butt; but even though we get towed around in the Kayak, I didnt figure on the lower power. Maybe I'm landing 'em wrong. At full arms stretch I still get a really decent bend when trying to get the fish to the side or into the Kayak, and this is where I thought I would need a heavy power rod (along with a net, and agility to preclude a tip ove

Hello. My experience is freshwater bass fishing from a kayak or the shoreline, and only limited saltwater fishing for blues and tuna. So I'm hoping for some help/suggestions. I want to venture out Kayak fishing for Striped bass. I woud like to stick to what I'm used to: cast and retrieve, plastics (I'm told swimbaits or sluggo's would work well), and a low profile baitcasting reel. I was thinkin

I read yesterday on the ask larry dahlberg (hunt for big fish) forum, how he doesnt think the spiral wrap makes any difference unless you "high stick" your rod. I never did get to try or make the demo device. Does it flip easy, or just when "high stick" type of force is applied?

I'm no lawyer, but i think if you have some sorta new unique idea that had some value or benefit to you or yourbusiness, that it would be considered your 'trade secret' (which does enjoy some legal protection against theft); but since you took absolutely NO action to protect it, I dont think it's yours anymore, and anyone could take it, reshape it if they want, and make it theirs for whatever ben

FYI uline.com has 3" cable ties that are about 2.3mm wide. They sell 'em in packs of 1,000 for $13. The foot on the 3.0 batson is about 5mm long, giving some room to start the wrap. Cheers
