Are the Lamar threaded wood turning mandrels just as effective for turning cork? Can I do without a regular mandrel If I have one of these wood turning mandrels? I cant imagine why I would need both, but figured I'd ask just in case. Thanks in advance. Re: mandrels

The only issue you might run into is the regular cork mandrels come in 1/4" while the smallest threaded mandrel is 5/16", so you will have to drill out 1/4" rings to 5/16". No biggie just use one of the flexcoat pilot drills. Regards Dave Fishing is Life the rest is just Details Re: mandrels

Steve,
Buy the regular mandrel, take a die set and cut 1/4" threads down about 1.5" down the mandrel on one end. Add a sleeve (I used a hose splice, you can use a piece of copper tubing as well) and 1/4 " nut. Done. Do a search under Mike Barkleys name in the photo area, he has a pic of one there. I just threaded mine on one end, bought a 1/4" nut to fit, and use a sleeve to hold the work when you tighten the nut down. On the other end away from the threads you need a gripper, it's a 1/4" round piece about 3/8" wide that has an alen head screw in the middle. This slides up and down the mandrel and you tighten it where you want it, Lock the gripper in place, add the cork or wood, then the sleeve, and tighten the nut. They sell those little gripper things (dont know the name!) at any harware. DR Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/24/2007 06:48PM by Duane Richards (DR). Re: mandrels

Unless you're building Ice Rods or UL spin rods, or 0/1/2wt. flyrods, I doub't you'll ever have a need for a 1/4" mandrel for turning cork. It's a pretty specialized size, and most everyone goes to the 5/16" as the minimum size.

I've got all three. They all are useful for both cork and EVA, or anything else I want to turn.
We use them in the PacBay lathe (in the center portion of the chuck). One of the best tools we have. Uncle Russ Calico Creek Rods Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
