I'm looking for some advice and some ideas of which kind of epoxy people use and why. I'm using one that I think might be a little to thick. Is that possible or am I doing something wrong? Is there a fix? By the way, I love this board. You guys are awesome.

Just looking at the photo page and seeing the modified grizzly cork lathe, I have a question. How well does a regular electric drill work as the turning motor and does it heat up during use? How long would a good drill last after being used in this manner? Seems like drills are meant for short term bursts and not continuous duty. I would be afraid I'd burn mine out. Also, what about cordles

Hi all I am looking for some input as to which types of glues you all are using to glue up cork rings and also for reel seats. I have been using classic rod builders epoxy glue for all of my glue up steps on my handles however it gets kind of messy.I currently am out of glue and am looking to try something new. Also when using a mandral for turning and shaping the cork rings what steps are d

If one decides to glue-up and shape cork on a mandrel, how do you get it off the mandrel? Is some type of release agent applied? Thanks, -Cary

I haven't seen this discussed anywhere & I'm wondering what the best procedure is for getting a composite cork butt piece sized to fit the handle base on a spinning rod. Here's my current process & I'm hoping for some improvement... I build the base grip for the spinning rod on a 1/4" mandrel and turn it to size using a drill press. I ream out the id of the handle & bond it

Kids, do not try this at home. This stunt was done by amateurs and should not be imitated. Last night I took a scrap piece of rod blank about the size and taper of my next rod. I carefully applied wax as described in previous posts. I reamed each cork ring to the right size hole and slapped on some Rod Bond to build a grip. I intended to use the scrap piece of blank as a mandrel. When I got ho

I recently purchased a Grizzly mini-lathe and a set of Andy Dear's mandrels. Not wanting to spend too much money on a drill press, I bought a drill stand from Sears or should I say a mini-drill press. The drill press is the one where you use your drill as the power source and it cost $40. In all I have spent $120 not counting the mandrels which my son gave to me for Xmas. I made my own cork c

After much research, I'm ready to begin building my own custom graphite fly rods. I would appreciate any input as to which bonding agents and finishes give you veteran rod builders the best results and are the easiest to use? 1)Generally epoxy for reel seats, cork grips, tip tops? Does the Flex Coat Thermal Plastic stick for tip tops work better than a good two part epoxy for attaching a tip? 2

I've been searching for cork rings at a reasonable price, and I keep ending up with a price of about $1 per inch. Only problem is, for the price of 10" of rings, I can buy 13" of beautiful straight handle, and then turn it down to my specifications without ever having to glue it up. For standard handles, why would I want to pay more money to give myself extra work? (I understand if on

I got a set of mandrels from Andy Dear and they are awesome. I've started using Rod Bond for gluing the cork rings and it seems no matter how much I wax the mandrel, it's a chore to get the dang thing off. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi, is there any other wax or anything that would do the trick when gluing cork rings on a mandrel? Wouldn't just a regular candle do? thanks, Jari

Hello all, I was talking with one of the rodbuilders in my area recently. The subject of gluing cork rings came up. He informed me that he uses 5 minute epoxy to glue up all of the cork rings in his handles. I had never heard of anyone using 5 minute for this purpose. He stated that he didn't need to use a cork clamp, and he could be sanding the grip in about 25 minutes after gluing. He mixed the

I have been building my own grips for flyrods for quite some time. Up until now I have been using a waterproof cement specifically made as saxophone/reed cement. I have always had good results but am now having difficulty finding it. I guess I'll have to begin using something else. I'm interested in what others are using to glue cork rings and their opinions. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys- I posted last night but my post was removed, I can only assume because I didn't include a two part name. My question is, I'd like to switch the fighting butt on the SCLU 8 weight and put one of the ones they use in an 11 and up on it. That is an EVA/foam composite. Basically I'd like to know where to get the butt they use in a glue on or slipover. Does anyone know who manufactures

I make up my cork handle parts on a 1/4" stainless steel mandrel and turn them before removing the part for reaming and fitting to the blank. I have all kinds of problems getting the bore to stay perfectly central as I remove quite a bit of material to get some of the parts to fit my blanks. I am tempted to think the residual epoxy in the 1/4" bore is deflecting the reamers &/or d

I did a search but couldn't find an answer to my question. What is a recommended or preferred method of trimming/slicing burl cork rings into thin (1/8") trim rings? I have a Clemen's Lathe that I could use for this task, but don't have any idea how I could slice accurately. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Phil Ptak Float Fishing Specialties

When gluing together the rings for a foregrip with a recessed hood for the reel seat, is it better to glue the recessed ring to the rest of the rings, turn the grip as a whole and then glue it to the rod/reel seat just like you normally would or is it better to glue all rings but the recessed ring and glue the recessed ring to the reel seat hood first and then shape the recessed ring after the re

....it did not turn out too good. I used Tom Kirkman's method of gluing the rings together on a pre-waxed mandrel and it worked great. Thanks, Tom!!! But, that's about the only good thing. When I put the mandrel in the lathe, it became obvious that the front 1/2 to 1/3 of the grip was going to need substantial turning to make it uniform and perfectly round. This made the grip smaller in diam

hi, im considering purchasing a 10'6" rainshadow blank RX7. im wondering what type of action this blank has? im in need of a moderate action blank. also, what does a matte clear finish look like? now on reel seats, when fitting a seat into the cork handle, does the shape of the hood(because its not round) just push into place? or is there some cutting to do? also, when purchasing a reel seat

What is the best way to ream out a preformed cork handle. The previous ones I have done have become larger on the ends and tight in the middle. The current rod I am going to build is a spey rod and this could become a problem with the longer handle. Not to mention the added stress of spey casting. Once it all fits good should I glue in each piece(rear cork, reel seat, front cork) seperately or a

I use 1/4" threadrod for turning cork. Slide rings on, put wingnuts and washers on each end and tighten. I then use the same threadrod to turn it on. In order to prevent the RodBond from sticking to the threadrod, I use nonstick cooking spray. Just LIGHTLY coat the threadrod with spray, slide rings on as you glue them and viola. It comes off 24hours later without a hitch. Works great

Whats everyones experience with premade grips. I know that good cork is getting scarce! What companies out there offer nice grips at reasonable $$. Ive only purchased 3 grips so far, 2 for $28.00 each plus shipping from one company and one for $17.95plus shipping from another . Apples to apples the more expensive grips were not $10.00 (64% more expensive) nicer than the less pricey grips. The

An excellent article in the most recent issue of Rod Maker on preparation of surfaces to be glued. As I was about to glue some cork rings on a blank I recalled the article and re-read it. After a second reading it seemed to me the article was directed towards gluing with epoxies. I use a weatherproof exterior wood glue on my cork rings because after turning the cork handle on a lathe the glue

We've had such good conversation discussing gluing cork rings, I thought I'd throw out the same type question for rod tips, realizing everyone has the right to their opinion. When I asked a friend in the business, he recommended Flex Coat 5 minute epoxy for the job. It works fine, but after reading the warning label I decided to discontinue use. Fatal if swallowed...damages skin...causes blindn

298. Cork Glue
I've heard of many different options for glueing cork rings. After reading an earlier post, I went out and bought some plain ol' Elmers waterproof wood glue and tried it. It seems to work as well as anything I've tried. Does it last as well as other, more expensive alternatives? Also, Home Depot is full of new plastic wood sealants, fillers, varnishes, etc. Anyone have any neat tips to preserve,
