I'm looking for some advice and some ideas of which kind of epoxy people use and why. I'm using one that I think might be a little to thick. Is that possible or am I doing something wrong? Is there a fix? By the way, I love this board. You guys are awesome. Re: Which type of Epoxy????

Gary, If you are talking about the adhesive, most rod builders would recommend the specific product called Rod Bond. It is a thick paste type product of a butter consistency when mixed properly. It does one of the best jobs in reel seat and handle holding power than about anything discovered, and highly reliable, easy to work with. For thread finish, the product you may be using is a 'High Build' formula and it's perfectly normal that it is a 'thick' mixture. The thinner formulas are available as "Light Build", such as Flex Coat Lite, or U 40 LS Supreme. These may take a couple of applications to achieve the desired result to cover your wrap. A high build formula that is exceptional for clarity and quick drying, less bubbles and one coat coverage if you want. This is Glass Coat. You can use it in a thinner application if you want effect of the lighter coverage. As long as you mix it thoroughly in a 1:1 proportion (or ratio), this results in the correct mix. It will appear 'thick' as it is a high build formula. Others in this category are Clear Coat and Flex Coat hi-build. Since discovering the use of Glass Coat, I've never gone back to any others and it shows highly desireable as the best finish on wraps, including butt wraps or any size guides with modifying the application technique to coverage wanted. Asking rodbuilders which type epoxy to use is like asking smokers what brand they smoke. You will get a lot of different and all correct answers. Myself, I use Rodbuilders Epoxt from Flex Coat for installing anything but the tip top to a rod blank. I use hot glue for installing tip top's on the blank after cleaning both rod and tip top. I use a good contact cement to bond cork rings together, and LITE formula rod finish by Flex Coat for the threads. Thats what I use, and for me they work well. Lite formula is thick when mixed, but can be put in place as thin as desired with brush or knife. Austin Re: Which type of Epoxy????

I got a feeling that if you want a thinner finish that moves around easier that LS Supreme is something you're going to be very happy with. Invest in a kit and try it out. Re: Which type of Epoxy????

For cork I use Weldbond's universal adhesive because it doesn't leave much ofa line between cork rings. If you use this product to glue burl cork rings you won't see any line at all. For gluing the grip and real seat I use Flex Coat's epoxy, FC tip top adhesive and FC lite for the wrappings. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
