211. Gorilla glue
I am considering using Gorilla glue to attatch individuel cork rings for my handle. In the past I have used two part epoxy, but I am looking for a product that is quicker, simpler, but effective. Has anyone out there had any experiance with this product on cork handles.?
Thanks Greg

212. Large cork rings
A father of a friend of mine gave me a plastic bag full of never -been-used cork rings. It's pretty good cork. The hole diameter is 3/8. All the rods I build reguire smaller handles. Question?.... can I glue them separately on a 3/8 dowell, then square cut each one off and reame the center smaller? Will this doctored cork ring with a wooden center be ok to turn for handles? Thanks S

213. Cork Handle
I am putting together a Cork handle. I fit each piece to the rod by filing each hole individually and then putting a small mark on the outside of the cork, so as to assemble them in the same order.
I tapered the mandrel with masking tape to simulate the rod taper and match that of the inside diameter if the cork. I then coated the masking tape with a thin plastic bag I spiraled up the blank (I

If one has hypersensitivity to epoxy, what is the best alternative (glass and graphite blanks)
for finishing wraps which most closely approximates the look of epoxy, and also what would you use to glue the reel seat and rod handle? Thanks.

215. Turning Balsa Wood
I got a couple of 3" x 3" x 12" blocks of balsa that I want to turn for handles. Stuff is amazingly light (and soft) and I am wondering if a scraper will tear the wood, or, if I should just sand the whole thing? Thought I'd ask before finding out the hard way which is best.
Thanks,
NT

I usually use Devcon epoxy for gluing up cork handles, but I have heard Titbond III also works.
Any comments about Titebond III?

Folks, I just posted a few photos showing grips constructed using glued-up "blocks" of cork composite sheeting and rubberized cork sheeting. Several "brown" cork rings were also used.
Please forgive the poor photo quality - I in the early phase of trying to use a dig camera and to up-load photos.

218. The REAL burnt cork
So I received a bunch of nice burnt cork from Andy Dear a couple of days ago, along with a few mandrels (thanks!).
First one I glued up and had on the lathe...came out beautifully...dark burnt burl with the lighter stuff on both ends. Nice looking, meaty full wells grip.
I wanted to get it done so I could put it on the 5wt that I've had in the shop for a while. Tapped it off the mandr

220. sanding cork grips
I am a beginner and would like to make a thinner grip for some small hands. I know she prefers a grip with a dimeter of less than one inch. Is it easy or even possible to sand down a grip that is purchased on line or do i need to begin with building my own handle from cork rings and such.
Thank YOu

i just glued up some cork rings with titebond III and it's clamped. the titebond bottle says keep clamped for 30 mins, then don't stress for 24 hours.
how do most of you approach this? how long before you remove the clamp and start sanding/forming the grip?
and a related question, does titebond III take wood stain once dry?
thanks

223. Cork grading scale
There is a nice article in the latest issue of "Rod Maker" about a cork grading system.
My problem is that I can find cork rings that look like the Grade 1 in the pictures, but when the rings are turned over, they may be a grade 2 or 3 on the back side.
The best rings I have found so far have been from Angler's Workshop.
Has anyone found grade 1 rings on both sides? what is yo

If you have been building rods for a few years you probably have a collection of cork rings that you rather not use for building handles. I am speaking of those rings that are full of pits and cracks. I used to buy cork by the hundreds and invariable there would be a few bad ones in the bunch. I was laying in bed reading about tying flies and an idea struck me; why not make these rings into t

225. Wood for grips
Hi guys
I asked once before but can not find the post.
Reading the posts about cork I am looking to do some wood handles.
Balsa Wood is soft but no grain -- what would be say the next step up -a soft wood with some grain in it -easy to drill a hole in to mount on a blank ??
Also - A 2" buy 2" stock, when rounded will give me what, 1 1/2" OD ??
Thanks"

226. flex coat arbors
i primarily construct stand-up/trolling rods used for tuna/sharks.....I have always used masking tape or glass wrap as a spacer for my reel seats and uni-butt ferrules and over the years have never had one bad experience. I either use rod bond (or 5 minute epoxy for uni-butts) and sometimes flext coat finish to glue together. After reading many post about the superiority of the flex coat arbors

228. Removing handles
Can handles be removed after being epoxied on? If so,how. My first spinning rod was a total disaster and I am tired of looking at it. I used ta handle that was to short and the guides are heavy TiCH. This rod is so off balance it is not even worth giving away. I have built some very nice ones since thanks to the great folks at Custom Tackle.

I ream out my cork grips by hand and have a problem keeping centered, seems I always get just a little off center. I only build for my immediate family & they don't notice my imperfections but I see them & would like to eliminate them, any suggestions.

To all,
I read with great interest the thread about reactions to epoxy....As I have gotten to the point where I cannot have ANY epoxy come in contact with my skin.
It is most problematic with milling my grips.
I've been considering the use of polyurathane adhesives for my cork ring assembly, and am wondering if any professional builders have had extended experiance with it's use for this

I am looking for options for a preformed cigar cork grip for a fly rod. most "cigar" designs, like the one illustrated for struble online, are symmetrical, with the thickest, bulge, in the middle, seemingly tapering slightly smaller towards each opposite end. anglers workshop offers two versions of a slightly different version of cigar.
i am looking for a different kind of "ciga

This may be a dumb question but here it goes anyway. I've seen posts regarding both types of glue used on cork. If you are going to glue the rings directly to the rod rather than a mandrel, I would assume you would use the Rod Bond since you need to glue the cork to the blank as well. Is this correct or will the Titebond work for gluing the cork to the blank as well? Also, not knowing much about

233. Gluing Cork Rings
This is in response to Dan Colville's thread because I have a question. I use Devcon 2-part for gluing rings but I was making checkerboard and ring inlays out of CustomGrip II and gluing them together with Weldwood contact cement. In the last year I've started to make inserts from burl and regular cork and found it a real pain to glue them together with epoxy so I tried the Weldwood and it's mu

I am working on several fly rods which will be using a hooded fuji quick-lock grip as a fighting butt. For those who have used this method before, what is the best way to bore and attach the rings to the quick-lock tightening shaft?
I am planning on boring out the rings with a dremel, gluing up the rings with a hypolon butt plate on the shaft, then shaping the quick-lock with rings attached u

237. finer points?
OK, now I have the first couple of rods under my belt, and am starting to notice the critiques of rods that other people make. Recently, there was a rod for sale and it was criticized for having "bulgy" epoxy, and crummy cork. I have tried to put my epoxy on in a football shape, is this one of eye of the beholder things, or is it more of a standard to make it just as straight across as
