Evenin' folks, I have been recieving numerous inquiries regarding the availability ThreadMaster Lite. Just wanted to let you all know that the tentative release date is sometime in Mid-March. The batches we have tested show absolutely no loss of the properties everyone seems to like in the High Build. Additionally it does have an extra few minutes of potlife than the o

I have been using this product for sometime but I would like to know what others use. I am looking for a product that is easier to mix and apply. Something that is a little bit smoother, more towards the liquid state. Thank you for any and all replies.

I am building my first 2 hander. On my one handers, my cork rings are epoxied (slow cure) and turned on the blank. By the time I install the section in the compresion jig, and I am cleaning off the excess epoxy from a 7.5 inch grip and 1.5 inch fighting butt, the epoxy is just beginning to get tacky. I am concerned, that when I am gluing-up a 15 inch grip and a 5 inch butt , the rings in t

Ok I can remember seeing this post before and thinking how the h can you let that happen. well now here I am. When i got my mandrels from andy I asked if i should use paraffin and he said he wouldn't. Well so i didn't and i used rod bond as i always do to glue up my cork. Nice cr1 rings and nice inlay with burnt rings spread out. I formed a nice fenwick half well and all went perfect. Sooooo now

Hello all, I have 2 part question: 1. Where do I buy denatured alcohol? I have removed some labels from blanks and cant get the remaining glue off. I have tried rubbing alcohol, but no good. Will denatured handle this? 2. I have used cork rings glued on rod in past to make grips. On 2 new rods i am going to be starting i have purchased preformed grips. what is the process for gl

I just went back in the archives and saw some posts on a cork drilling jig that Tom made. Since I can't get a copy of Volume 1 of rodmaker does any one have plans for this jig or how can I get some plans. Thanks Scott

Been using Rod Bond for this but am unhappy with the lines that are sometimes visable between the rings. What do you guys recommend I use that I can have confidence in ? Preferably a readily available product form the shelves of Lowes or something... Thanks!

I thought I had a back issue of Rod maker on how to glue those little pieces of pie shaped cork together. Couldn't find it. I will be using epoxy, but what do some of you do to hold the shape while they are drying. Thanks as always Scott

The one area of rod building i seem to get into troubloe with is glue ups on grip work. I never seem to have enough time to glue a grip especially when gluing cork rings or inlays and something always goes wrong. This happened to me again today when gluing a gip I was right in the middle of the fore grip and the glue set leaving me with "a mess" on the rod and three more rings and two i

Greetings, Maybe there's an easy solution that I'm not aware of. Did just search through the threads on 'lathe' and did not find any solution. A couple of questions: 1. Is there a good way to shape cork grips without having a lathe? If there's an obvious solution, I don't know about it and would appreciate any tips. 2. Failing that, any suggestion for the most basic cheapie lathe t

Ok this is the third thread on the subject. I am in posetion of some really cool colors of corian and its screaming out to be used as a rod handle. What seems to be the consenses is its too heavy to use as a handle material. What does anyone think of my idea to just use it for a inlay on a cork grip and bore the center and use it as a inlay with arbor material under it to reduce the weight. I rea

Has anyone had any luck with a cork filler that is waterproof and blends into and adheres to the cork well? What is the material?

Has anyone used waterproof woodworking (yellow glue) for gluing up cork rings? No mixing and much easier to sand. Would be to make pre-formed grip, then epoxy grip to blank.

I've gone by the rule that for heavy SW rods and guide wraps, you shouldn't use CP as you won't get any finish penetration, therefore have a weaker wrap. Makes sense so I do it I 've had success with med to medium heavy sufrods using Madiera 40 and CP, casting up to 3 oz weights with no guide foot cracking or guides ripping of the rod. I've even spiral wrapped a Calstar GF900M with the guides w

I have searched the archives (now going blind slowly), but I cannot find an answer to this... Many of the cork rings I recently purchased do not have flat surfaces for gluing. The uneveness is not out of control, but it definitely exists. I come from a woodworking background, and gluing endgrain -- a risky proposition under the best of circumstances -- was unthinkable with surfaces that did

First of all, thank you to those that have helped me along the way and all of you that have shared your knowledge and experience on this site. I have a few more touch ups with epoxy on my surf rod which I am spin/drying by hand as I type and have some questions for my next build. 1. I used flexicoat lite two part epoxy and one of my batches hardened up in five minutes after I measured precis

I am trying my hand at checkering with cork rings. While gluing the pie shaped pieces together, I accidentally got them misaligned. I didn't notice until the glue had dried. I use Weldbond Adhesive for gluing the rings. I had used my last two dark rings from Andy. I tried pulling the rings apart but that didn't work. So I stuck the foregrip in the microwave for 30 sections and the rings cam

when gluing the cork rings together on a mandrel to turn a grip do you wax the mandrel and then actually glue the cork rings to the mandrel? Or do you just glue the rings to each other? Does the wax actually provide enough friction between the cork and mandrel to turn it? Or does it simply allow you to remove the cork from the mandrel after gluing them?

I want to mount a Fuji FPS reelseat on a Forecast IP904 blank with a split rear grip and a single ring as a foregrip. The blank diameter in front of the reelseat is about .440 in diameter, a 16mm NPS has an oval front end around .654 x .702. I'd like to have the single ring wind up as close to the same diameter as the reelseat so I could lay my finger on the blank. But that will put the wall

I've got some of Andy's Laguna burl cork rings that I'm going to use Titebond III to glue together - the color of Titebond III matches these rings very well. In some of Tom's previous articles, contact cement seems the best adhesive for gluing EVA foam to Eva foam. But what's my best choise to glue an EVA foam ring to one of Andy's burl cork rings - contact cement or Titebond III ? Thanks.

Will the polyurethane glues work for gluing cork rings together and also to wood and EVA? I guess I don't want to use two part epoxies unless I absolutely have to. Anyone have favorite glues? Thanks Dave

Does anyone have experience using this technique (www.northcoastknives.com/northcoast_knives_tutorials_hints_tips3.htm) with balsa wood for fly handles - to try to make balsa wood a little more firm? Apparently it might be useful for stabilizing knife handle woods (someone on this Forum led me to this site for stabilizing wood at home). I've made-up some 1/4" balsa into rings, using a

When shaping glued-up cork rings on a lathe are you working directly on the blank or an arbor of some type that the shaped handle will be removed from? I'm thinking that the rings are glued-up right on the actual blank and that blank is chucked but I wanted to ask first.

Thanks every one for your insitefull info. on Gorila glue. I have decided not to use it. As Im glueing each individual cork piece to the blank, then turnig the whole blank to shape the handle, it sound like Rod Bond is the way to go. Is it a two part? Who makes it? and where do you get it? Thanks again. Cheers Greg
