CA ...stands for cyannoacrylate..not sure if that is the exact spelling.
Finishes well on pens pool cues, reelseats etc..
But beware...the fumes have really bad side effects....wear a mask...or in the very least be very well ventilated!

I think Steffen bros make their own blanks...fibreglass though....if you like that old school kind thing.

John,
If you want light I would recommend single foot guides over snakes....the big savings is in the weight you save to make the extra wrap and epoxy it on snakes.
I read that you prefer snakes....wondering why? Other than clearing ice easier on a rod to be fished in the winter I don't see any advantage to snakes???

Ed,
I was killing some time in a sportsman's whse store one day....they don't sell rod building stuff . I decided to look through some of the manufacturers rods for quality and was surprised....this is a big box store and they had hundreds possibly a thousand rods from most big manufacturers.
I found that the St Croix rods where very well built....also Shimano had nicely assembled rods. I

I think if you look at the Steffen bros site they show some pics of them making blanks. There has been a resurgence of fibreglass in the last few years.

Ray,
I agree with you on what probably should happen....but I don't think rod building is any different than many other types of "custom" items for sale.
I would say "you get what you pay for......and buyer beware is the rule". If Billy Vivona (sorry Billy but you make really nice rods) sells a rod for $500.00 (only hypothetically) and "Bubba" says I can make

I try not touch the thread but also keep a bottle of alcohol based hand sanitizer on my bench and wash and wipe with paper towels.

JIm,
The tru oil can't penetrate through the epoxy. Tru oil is not a varnish it is an oil.
Eugene,
The best way to go IMO is to use stabilized wood....then you can finish it with whatever you want...or nothing at all.
Tru oil is very popular for unstabilized wood.

Thanks Guys for all the info. I am going to try to get as many of these blanks in my hands as possible to give them a feel.
Mike,
I am going to be fishing rivers in Southwestern Ontario Canada. Medium size rivers and I prefer to wade fish most of these areas. I have many spinning rods and do use them once I get under about a 1/4 oz (I do have heavier spinning rods also).....I do prefer cast

Will be using tubes and twister tail grubs on 1/4 oz jigs ...small top water plugs.
Moving back to the area where I grew up........lots of rivers full of big (and small) smallmouth.

I am going to build a lighter weight rod for smallmouth fishing. It will be a light casting rod.....fast ....but light to medium for power. I am going to use a casting reel on it. 6 or 6 1/2 ft in length....leaning towards 6 1/2.
I have been considering several different RX 6 and RX7 Batson blanks....any suggestions on your favorites?
I am planning on a split grip and a bumper spiral syste

13. Re: Fly Rod Help
Does he understand that the Wt rate on the rod has nothing to do with the actual weight of the rod? A 4 wt rod is meant to cast a 4 wt line and a 7 wt meant to cast the much heavier 7wt line. simply adding wt to the reel end won't make a difference.
You may already understand this but it wasn't clear from your post.

Nothing wrong with the kits....especially for your first rod....but cabela's isn't the only source.
I would suggest you find one of the sponsor's from the links on the left that is close to your area. Almost all will be able to set up with a kit. Or at list sell you components that will fit together until you know what you are looking for. I suggest you find one close to you to save on shippi

I built one of these for my son....it is a great little rod!
Look in the library under static guide placement....or do a search on here. Wal-mart...Bass Pro...Cabela's... all sell good products for fishing IMO.
I used 25 16 12 10 08 07 out to tip.....but you could go lighter.

Steve,
There are tons of books and websites and also as mentioned above...several places that offer clinics where you leave with a completed blank.
As far as tapers there are websites with tons of tapers on them from some of the original masters of the craft.
I would suggest taking a course.......using their tools then completing your first blank. This will give you the information you

I have a 5 wt & an 8wt tiger eye and while obviously very different they still have a similar action. It is a sweet rod. Moderate action but still plenty of backbone........I landed an 8 lb large mouth this year on this rod with about 5 extra lbs of salad on the end when it was all said and done....rod has performed beyond my expectations...a great value. Please note Both my Blanks are the 2

@#$%& is great........but you have to use common sense.
As mentioned above look at the sellers feed back from other buyers and the number of transactions. If the sellers has many transactions and all good feedback the chances are they are very reputable.
Sometimes you get what you pay for....If I am getting a blank for 5.00 w/o a warrantee or manufactures sticker I would assume it is not a

I build rods mostly for myself and as gifts and do not surpass some of the great artisans on this site. But I believe I make pretty nice rods. One of the ways I like to make my rods unique is with the pieces wood I use.....I love the look of wood in reelseats and handles. While the practice of using wood is common I try to pick exceptional pieces to make it the focal point of the rod. I typical l

If you check out the pen turners sites they carry plastic polishes for the acrylic pen blanks. Penn State Industries would be a good starting point.

Anytime you buy a blank from any source and it has no warranty or decals I would assume it is a "Blem" or second.

Just to clarify....I did not say a Popping blank was fast.
"Crankbait" rods that I have seen have very slow tips.....for a while there were several manufactureers making commercial rods with a graphite butt section and a glass tip. I have never seen a popping rod like that???
For the record I don't like this type of rod...but each to his own. I also don't do a bunch of crankbai

Eric,
Most rods are very simialr in the skills you will need to build them.........so just build something you want to fish with. One type of rod isn't really much easier to build than another so might as well get one you want.
This site is great......Tom's book is very good...easy to understand..full of good pics (worth a thousand words).
I would suggest you find a sponsor in your area,
