Not true of all things Billy..........as men we can learn from others failures and sucesses. If it were true there would be no use for this forum. I am a believer in getting in there and doing it......but I don't like cutting wraps off. LOL

Side note.......was in my local Sportsman's Whse store and looking through their rod selection just to see how well they were put together. I was impressed with the quality of the way most of the rods were assembled until I got to the most expensive rods they had. They had several GLOOMIS Streamdance flyrods 6 of 8 rods ranging from 300.00 to 575.00 had guides that were crooked (foot not aligned

Anyone had any success doing a dark colored tartan pattern...want to do a "black watch " tartan composed of Dark bues Green black with white and yellow trim. Most of the tartans I have seen are composed of a white backround with colors added then filled with white and trim added...allowing for the under color to beeld thru the white. This looks great but the tartan I am trying to reprod

I use index cards...or sometimes I will extend the wraps past the foot of the giude the distance equal to the width of the packing tool I use. Makes the wraps smaller towards to tip but on lighter rods I like this scenario. I do trim wraps based on the number of turns. It is a good quick reference.

I build mostly fly rods...I like all the Batson products I have used and also love the Sevier Tiger eye blanks. There are so many good blanks out there it is hard to limit it though.

You I believe are looking for the Fuji IPSM seat with HPS16N nut to go with it....Mudhole has them listed. You might have to make your own cork or eva to fit not sure if the have the pre made ones or not. If you look at fuji's website from the sponsors list you can look up the parts. I'm sure others sell them..Mudhole was the only one I checked. Also Classic Custom Wood has a tutorial on ho

Paul, I will be doing a light colored under wrap with a decorative butt wrap over top.....I doubt I will underwrap the guides as most saltwater rods are. This will be a freshwater bass rod. Most of the rods I build are fly rods and are not very flashy compared to some of the boat rods I have seen. Thanks for the advice guys....this is so much better than the try it & see approach

Following up on an earlier post...excuse my ignorance I have no experience with under wraps and little with decorative type butt wraps. I am building a flashy rod for my son outside of my nornal comfort zone. I am planning a nice butt wrap with some under wraps. from my earlier post I have decided to use regular size A Gudebrod nylon and CP as oppsoed to NCP thread. My question is....do I C

Fly fisherman magazine has an ad every issue....I think this is the only place you can get this from. I don't know what the benefit is cause I never hold my fly rods down near the seat...I guess maybe shorter overall lenght of reelseat & grip ???

Thanks guys for all the responses.... I have some Flex coat CP.......wasn't going to use NCP but this just helped confirm what I had planned. Do any of you prefer one CP over another and why?

I don't do decorative wraps often and want to know....on under wraps and for decorative wraps....do most people prefer to use CP or just use NCP thread. I build mostly fly rods and go for mostly the more understated simple elegant wraps. I have a build coming up for my son and am going to make him something flashy...any advise would be appreciated thanks...

I build one or two rods per month. I build mostly for myself family and friends. This is a hobby for now....like Mick I think if I had to do it I wouldn't enjoy it so much. This seems to me like a life journey where you learn new things all the time and acquire new skills and at the end of the day you have something in your hand to marvel at....think I'd like to get into bamboo at some point.

Unless you had a party with alterior motives (trying to drive whatever product they were pushing) I don't think you would ever see a national type of rod building organization. I agree with many of the folks...it would bring too much politics to this craft. I learned how to build rods through a local flyfishing club I am a member of....every year they put on a small rodbuilding class. I think

Just built my son a Batson Xtra lite...rod works great w 2 4 &6lb test mono...He has caught so many trout and panfish with it I've lost count. Why use a fly blank? They make great spinning blanks already.

Daniel, You would cut the thread then say 5 or 10 wraps before you want to start the new color you start your trim color and wrap over it so it is under your main color when you get to the point where you want to start the trim you wrap both colors at the same time when you get to the end you wrap the main color back over the trim so it is underneath....this will hold your trim color in place.

Stan, I have several pens and reelseats with CA finish and have never experienced a problem. I build mostly fly rods but can't imagine a situation where I would strike the surface of a reelseat? I don't use wood as a butt cap. I have never had a problem. Not say it isn't possible....but then many other finishes would be damaged I would think if you hit them with something hard also. It is wood

Stan, Chk out this site.. "Finishing" there is an article on CA finsihes...if you scroll down their are 2 articles under "Glue" about CA that you might find useful. While many of the no name super glues are not good I have used loctite brand CA which is sold at WM, Lowes, Home depot without any problems whatsoever. If you want to find more info or suppliers for CA loo

Tyson, I think you need to talk to a person....verify when they are going to ship it ...what service you need to get it by XX day. That way the shipper either says yes I can get it out today and it will deliver XXXX day. You can't assume the shipper will drop everything to pask your order and ship it...even then many charge extra for w/e delivery and don't normally include w/e in the days of s

The wax will also keep your rods shiny....the dirt is easily removed with a light swish of a terry cloth towel. Dirt doesn't adhere to the blank I bet you could even use a duster to clean a rod after a good coat of wax. A five min wax job will save you lots of time later trying to get dried slime/weeds off your blank when fishing the salad for bass etc.

I do it pretty much the same as Mike....except I do finish the wood on the mandrel while on the lathe. I typically leave my cork unfinished. Mostly I used stabilized wood so I am ussually using some wood turning polish to shine up the wood....occasionally I will use a rub on Polyurethane.

I use titebond III (because it is waterproof) without any problems...are putting a very thin coat on...you just need enough to cover the surface.
