Use the chart to get close....then tweak with the static method. There is no way to be wrong really, but if you adjust to guides based on the bend of the blank and place the strippers so you can reach the line. How could you go wrong?? You won't end up with some thing vastly deferent from what you get on the chart but it will be based on the very blank in your hand not just a generic reference c

Metric is a better system...but even in Canada where most things are done in metric they still use both systems. Going to be hard to get rid of feet and inches until it is no longer taught in schools.

Andy,
Can that warranty be serviced by you or does the blank have to be shipped back to the Manufacturer...in this case overseas???
"There is actually a higher percentage of blank failure with scrim based blanks than with helical blanks" That may be so....but my statistics professor once said you can manipulate statistics to suit ones goals very easily. There are a lot more &quo

Chuck,
While fax machines are somewhat usefull devices they mostly aren't a common tool most companies use much anymore. They are obsolete. A scanner and email is the best way to go or simply get on the phone.
Faxes are one way transmissions...people do not respond back to faxes most times. I bet the other sponsors just filed your ppwk and are awaiting an order of some kind or have you on t

Andy,
I have heard plenty of good things about the CTS blanks....I hope the new line is just as well received.
What kind of warranty is offered on these products? Seems to me that if CTS (or Lamar) stands behind the product with a good warranty it should help alleviate fears of blanks failure.

Because I primarily build rods for myself or gifts for people...I usually have a budget (closely monitored by my wife LOL).
I want components that have a certain level of quality but more often than not I don't buy the most expensive items. I also find myself using batson Enterprises products more and more because of the quality, value, and availabilty.
Of the 5 or 6 places I have done bus

Curious why each of you buys the components you choose for your rods.
Wondering what the motivation is...cost,availability,quality, good customer service, where product was manufacturered, uniqueness (think I just made that word up LOL).
Which is most important to you as a rod builder...would like to hear from all levels of rod builders pls.

Ashlie,
Maybe the best thing would be to put some on an extra ring if you have it and see if you like it.

Mark,
The WT of fly line you use is determined by the size of the fly's you will be chucking.......Most people use 5-7 wt for Smallies...I would suggest a 9' rod length. If you are planning on throwing really big flies go with a 7 or maybe even an 8 wt.......I use mostly a 6 wt .
If this is your first fly rod I wouldn't recommend getting a really fast action blank....they are less forgivi

71. Re: Punch
Read where someone was using a hole saw like the kind you use to make a hole for a door knob.. attached to a hand drill. This cuts out the bark in a circle and drill the hole in the center all in one operation. Make a lot less work to turn the rings down if they are already round to begin with.

I am using a handle for a retail version of a dental flosser....it is basically like a handle for a toothbrush......I took off the flosser attachment and use it upside down... tapers down to a triangular shaped point. Basically kind of looks like a toothbrush handle...borrowed from my wife. Works great ! Available at Wal-mart.
My wife was a bit upset but she got over it..LOL

Tom,
"rod building has some absolutes that some are, and some are not" I agree totally with this statement and agree that their are people who would be considered as professionals in the rod building field. I would not consider RodMaker magazine a technical journal by any means. You do a great job of presenting some technical information and I do not question the quality of the info

"Most of the time in order to be published by a reputable technical magazine the author has to be screened for credentials".....don't forget your talikng about Fishing rods not the cure for cancer.
One cannot get a degree in rodbuilding...........all credentials here are mostly based on experience. However you may have someone who has been building rods for 20 years with the

Jerry,
All of the above suppliers are great to deal with...another close to you is Schneider's in MTN home Arkansas...Ron is a great guy. Bob @ Custom tackle is great...Karen @ Bingham is wonderful...and I have heard nothing but great things about Robert at FishStix4u. Also I know at one time you could buy direct from Shikari...not sure you can do that anymore...but if you could and picked the

Something Tom didn't mention....when use static placement you know you have the guides set for what works best for that specific blank.....a chart doesn't allow for any differences between individual blanks. A chart is a good place to start then move the guides around from there.

Just a thought....let's say 80% of the time you get great sound advice on this forum and possibly 20% of the time it is questionable (just making these numbers up in my head)!
How do you know which is and which isn't ?
A wonderful feature about this site is the search feature. If consistent advise has been given on a topic over a fairly long period of time chances are it is good advice. N

Ken,
While this site requires you to register with your name some people would like have some sort of anonymity. By having the choice of whether to put my email in I quite frankly could be saying "I don't want to receive email traffic from other users". Many people like particpating in a forum like this when they have the free time to do it but do not want to be burdened with the res

Please advise how you make your wooden grips for IPS seats.
I have read the tutorial on the Classic custom wood site and found it very valuable but would like to know if your technique differs.
Very nice stuff....I really like the fly reelseat.....very classy

Some great things about this forum & the internet.........I think the good far outweigh the bad.
Their is very little censorship here.......as long as it is rod building related and not offensive...Tom let's it on this board.
This opens up the board to so many different people who all have different backrounds. You may be an expert at EVA grips and maybe the next guy knows how to make

Most standard charts list something like 4 ,4(or 4.5),4.5,5 (between guides not from tip)for the first 4 guides from tip ...you are within an inch or so of what might be considered normal. I personally don't like to put them less than 4" apart.
Also might try this...secure your weight ( or tie line from tip to stationary object) to your tip (put tip on permannetly) then run a line from

Dan craft is open...his website has been down...he is adding a shopping cart for online orders...you can still call him and order...
Do a search for Rocky MTN from previous posts and that should give you an indication of whether you need to order from there.
