Drum dryer - portable - dc motor

I recently completed building some portable drum style rod dryers.
I wanted to be able to use the dryers in various locations, as well as to be able to easily store the dryer when not needed.
The dryer uses a square 1 inch tube to minimize support bending as well as to keep dryer disks in alignment.

The dryers uses a DC gear motor to set the speed with minimal noise and heat.

I have uploaded pictures into the photo section.

Hi Roger,

Awesome drum dryer !. It looks like it is overloaded in weight for your 12 volts motor; not considering you will turns 12 poles on it simultaneously. Maybe you trim some off it from your disks.

Ben,
Actually, the weight is a non issue.
If you have a chance, check out some of these very high quality dc gear motors. Very very strong motors with very little current draw.
Since the center support shaft is well supported on ball bearings on both ends, the only real torque on the motor is the starting torque. Once the drum is turning, there is very little effort required to keep it turning.

Take care
Roger

Exactly - if you balance your rods equally on each side of the drum (don't put 2 rods on the same side - put them on opposing sides) it takes very little effort to turn the drum.

Roger,

What is that nice dc motor that is on it ?

By the way, I like the chuck you've posted.

Ben,
The motor is a Barber Colman - model CYMC-82700-751
[www.servosystems.com]

Note, this is the last motor on the page. This is actually a 24 volt dc motor that is rated to run at 12 rpm. The nice thing about dc motors is that the speed is proportional to the applied voltage. So, by running the motor on 12 volts, the motor runs at 6 rpm, which is the desired speed for this dryer.

With respect to the chuck. This is actually an old 1/4 inch drill chuck that had been in my junk box for the last many years. I had picked up this idea from another rod builder who used the chuck to connect the center dryer tube to the motor output shaft.
The drill chuck makes is very easy to attach the center shaft to the motor shaft, and for a portable dryer like this one, it makes disassembly a snap. Unless I am changing the lengths of the center shaft, I simply pop off the center shaft, loosen the bearing retainer ring and the dryer is ready to be put away as needed.

Take care
Roger

You've made this so simple and efficient and useful, that it shouldnt be long now before we see this available at a lofty price from a fine fishing, tackle or rod building supplier near you.....
