Hole saw would not be my first choice..modified or not. But if your gonna use one, then David's spot on about the pilot bit. On the pen trimming bit I use a 1/4" rod.

Drill it out after like Phil describes with a forster bit. Or if ya need to go deeper I'll use a pen barrel trimming bit and clean up the hole and fine tune the size with a dremel. They used to make the crafty cutter bit for inleting but i havent seen them advertised lately. I believe I saw a new style out but IIRC it was very pricey

Norm, kinda what I gathered as well. What's not clear is was he planning to add the length just to account for the fighting butt. Maybe alittle more info is needed. Build on blank as ya would normally without fighting butt and add 3.5" blank extension to add fighting butt. Basically building on a 9'3 1/2" blank. Usable length from top of grip around 8'+/-.(just ballparking 12"

It's was from when SC first added IPC to the avid/SCIII line up(when the blanks switched from matte black/grey to gloss grey). Thx for comparison dean! Sound like that 76MLXF is very similar to an older 3c69MLXF I have. It was different from the other XF Croixs I have or had. Locks up extremely quickly with very light tip. Much faster than the 5s69MLXF.

River current often requires more weight to maintain bottom contact, like Aaron mentions. The OG NED wasn't a bottom contact bait tho. It was glided across the bottom with minimal contact. Jay its not a 1/4-3/4oz. blank. Maybe Alex can chime in on why it's line/lure ratings are what they are since the new C6o2 blank carries the same ratings. The CCS IP numbers put the 703 in the same power range as the MHX SJ781 or a St Croix MLF.

David/Dean. X3...I noticed this when trying to decide between the MB684 and SB684..nearly identical on the comparator. I picked the SB over the MB since it was lighter. So yes I question the accuracy too.

Good stuff John! I have the SB684 and find it alittle stiffer than expected. Sounds like the MB684 might be alittle softer action being ya like it for TW and jerks. How do the 4 power SB and MB xrays compare in power?

El, If the plan is to eventually move her right to spinning reels, I'd reccomend starting her off with an underspin reel instead of spin cast. Same concept but instead of thumb button , they have the trigger that imitates holding the line with pointer finger. Easier transition to spinning IMHO. If thats the case you'd want to build the rod as spinning. As a bonus you have an excuse to b

David, Good point on elongated holes. I made a wood one similar to what you describe with elongated holes. I'm thinking now I'll do that to the quick grip so blank or mandrel can just drop right in.

Saw these and thought about modifying for cork but said why bother cause the quick grip clamps work great. No need to reinvent the wheel. Edit to add: OP, I'm in the titebond III group. Never had a problem and cleans up easy

Yeah it works great and super quick. Ya can even use these for some handle/reel seat assemblies on the blank since the one side detaches from the clamp. As long as ya have a clamp with a deep enough throat that is.
