My reasoning for offsetting was to try and start the spiral just a little sooner. I guess no line stacking is why some guys are offsetting it? I assumed offsetting the butt could cause line stacking in some instances even tho it hasn’t been my experience. I actually offset one pretty far maybe 15-20 degrees, I’d have to check. No line stacking and no ill effects casting. So that brings

Lance Do you ever offset the butt guide in the direction of the spiral. I did a couple with the offset butt and dont see any line stacking on the reel. Not sure it makes a huge difference TBH..Like to hear your thoughts or anyone's for that matter.

I could very well be wrong, but i have never once read a topic on here where a guy asked for IP or ERN of a surf, tuna popping, heavy salt saltwater etc. etc. blank. I really dont see too many requests for ccs data on fly blanks of any sort either. Freshwater, bass, and inshore rod builders are the ones most using the system.

High 400s to low 500s are what I consider medium powered blanks. IMHO.

Geoff Great stuff! I was thinking the NFC xray SJ703 might make a good light jerkbait blank with just alittle off the tip and maybe 2" off the butt. Take away alittle of that thin delicate tip to stiffen it up just enough. It's got good flex in the mid section but will still feel like a fast action and good recovery... Finished rod around 6'9"-6'10". Then again I find tha

The MHX SJ781 and 782 make great jerkbait rods for smaller stuff. And from reading David's post, sounds like their SJ783 is also a good choice for alittle more power. St croix/Rodgeeks spinning 66MF has always been a really good choice too. If ya need alittle more power and or throwing larger jerks the casting version 66MF, although it sounds like that's what your using now. I personally n

David, Thx again. You’ve confirmed I’m on the right track. Was researching nymphing (I’ve only euro nymphed 1 time with my buddy) rods and came up with similar idea of the small fighting butt. Also thinking downlocking reel seat to help balance. I’ve read the stripper guide placement is sometimes moved closer towards the butt on these nymph specific builds too. Any thoughts? Was

Thx David, yes the H&H were the ones I was looking at. They seemed like a good deal, with warranty, and a good number of positive reviews online. I did see the others labled "Xi" on the bidding site and they were much cheaper with no warranty and when I inquired about them to the seller, the answer was alittle odd. Yes I saw on their site that the H&H Xi were being redesi

I've done 2 like that. No issues whatsoever. On the one I left the casting seat and just built the grips on the tube. DW tape arbors just as ya described. The other was an all new handle/reel seat assembled on the tube. Any added weight is from the reel seat back and if anything just helps with balancing the rod.

Anyone have any experience with these. Looking for a budget 10' 3wt nymph blank. I see some decent reviews considering cost of these Xi blanks. Any other recommendations are also welcome. Looked at NFC but they only offer a 2wt or a 4wt. Hes wants on a 3 wt. Most other fly blanks are above budget that I'm seeing. I'm not a fly guy so any info on the build will also be appreciated

I much prefer building a rifling wrapped spinning rod..spiral your guides around the blank at least 3 times for proper twist rate. 24 guides on a 7' blank should do. It will get that line spinning to stabilize during flight. Advertise as having 140% more casting distance......throw in a zig zag guide layout towards the tip and your good to go. Can use casting or spinning reels with this set

Looks like 2 more really good options. I'd probably lean towards the etes72m cause we thow alot of 1/8 and 3/16oz. and the occasional day where 1/4oz is needed. THX!

Mick Glad ya mentioned the PB701MLF as a tube rod. My son wants a new tube rod with alittle more backbone than the 69MLXF and 70MF croixs he has.. the 661MLF and 701MLF were on the short list

If it works it works right!?? I agree, the St Croix 66MF and 70MF make excellent tube and general purpose smallie rods.

Interesting on your son's choice in a tube rod. Myself and most people I fish with tend to lean towards a nice fast action med power spinning blanks for tubes. Is it a modfast popping blank?

I Wussed out and just retired leaders on all my spinning setups with crazy Alberto. I'll practice the FG a bit and make sure I'm tying it correctly but going for winter smallmouth I don't wanna leave anything to chance. I'm not doubting the FG, just my wanna practice it a bit first. I've had enough heartbreak for one week, lost a trophy smallmouth at my feet yesterday and I'm still playing tha

Yeah ill definitely give it a shot and tie em night before and like ya said, on the water use the crazy alberto. Was thinking the same. Thx Yeah I tend to use the long leader only on a few of my spinning setups that are dedicated for bottom contact plastics..tubes, neds, etc. Fishing rocky rivers eats up these baits and longer leader just lasts longer. Baitcasting and spinning rods for mo
