Hi,
Is it required to use specialized rod binding thread, or can any thread be used? I have seen some fantastic colours in a local craft shop made by Gudebrod, that don't seem to be available in rod building spools. Thanks, Richard Re: Rod Binding Thread

Richard -
Gudebrod does indeed make several types of thread (kevlar, polyester, teflon) as well as nylon for fishing rods. You will probably find that the others have a coating applied for use with sewing machines and sergers. They also make silk thread for stringing beads, which is almost certainly coated (and usually thick - size E unless white). Check the spools carefully or ask someone in the store if they have a coating applied. Overall it's probably best to stick with the nylon made for fishing rods. Re: Rod Binding Thread

Hi Richard,
Stay away from cotton and rayon. Polyester thread is used by many builders, but usually requires the use of a color preserver to seal the lubricant that these threads contain. If CP is not used, the lubricant can contaminate the finish, causing "fish eyes". Madeira, Coats and Clark, and Sulky are some of the brands that you are likely to find at the local crafts store. I stick with regular nylon thread intended for rod building. I know others can be used but I am too chicken to risk a bad finish job or other problems. A lot of guys use Maderia and they have BEAUTIFUL colors. But I think you have to use color preserver in order to seal out the silincone it contains. Somebody else here would know more about that than me. I love the colors but have not actually used any. Re: Rod Binding Thread

Madeira Polyneon thread works very well, but like what has been said, you will need to use CP on them. One thing I think you will find with other threads is that they do not hold their shape when put under tension. They will flatten out and even fray easily. I use a combination of Gudebrod and Madeira. Re: Rod Binding Thread

A simple search would have answered your question. Lots of info on what threads to use. In sewing threads a 40 is most popular Good Wraps Bob Re: Rod Binding Thread

Is there an issue using CP?

With CP you get one color, with out CP you get that transparent color that is nice also. Two different colors. Bill - willierods.com Re: Rod Binding Thread

Hi Bill,
Is it best to use CP if I want the true thread colour to come out? Or are there threads that don't need CP, and still hold their colour? Thanks, Richard Re: Rod Binding Thread

If you want regular Gudebrod nylon to hold it's full color, you must use CP. Their NCP thread needs no CP to hold it's color. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/04/2009 11:36PM by Phil Erickson. Re: Rod Binding Thread

The regular nylon with the CP does look better IMHO. NCP thread looks kind of flat to me. Bill - willierods.com Re: Rod Binding Thread

CP is used to maintain as close to the spool color as possible. It also seals the thread which is why it should be used over polyestor sewing threads as it also seals any lubricants that may be on the thread for use in sewing machines. As already stated, POLYESTOR sewing thread is used by MANY builders. I use primarily Madeira, Coats & Cllark Trilobal and have never had any problem whatsoever. I also use Gudebrod, PacBay and Fish Hawk. All are good. I npn't care for the dull paint look of NCP thread (my opinion) Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!!
