question about thread

If I understand it correctly, the thread we use to wrap a guide is primarily to hold the guide until the epoxy sets up. If that is the case then why is it not recommended to use thread one might find in a sewing shop?

You are not correct, the thread is what holds the guide on, the finish only covers the thread to protect it.

Some do use sewing thread, but there are some things to be aware of. Long term durability is one - most rod building threads are nylon and fairly well suited to the task. Lubrication is another - many sewing threads are lubed with silicone to facilitate their use in sewing machines. This doesn't really work well for guide wrapping unless you take some precautions.

Martin,

Buy threads designed for rod building and you'll find better results. There are some "sewing" threads that will work however.

It's true the thread is what holds the guide and gives it strength, HOWEVER, the epoxy finish also adds to the strength of the guide wrap, the two in conjunction working together is the key.

With sewing threads they coat them with silicon so they go though the machine better. This means it -HAS - to be coated with CP before finish or they will Fish Eye.

If you use sewing threa, stick with POLYESTOR or NYLON and USE CP. Avoid Rayon, Cotton, etc as they will swell and produce "fuzzies".
I use primarly poyestor on all my rods, including guide wraps, with NO problems of any kind
