I want to build my son a spinning rod for his graduation this spring. He is studying agriculture and his favorite farm machinery is Massey Ferguson. So I want to make the rod red and the seat and or grip a flint metallic grey. I know I will have to paint the rod red to get the color I want but am not sure about the grip. The big problem is I have only made fly rods and have no knowledge of how t

I am currently repairing and stripped down an older MHX based rod. I wet sanded a light layer of the entire rod and decided to try the Krylon Fusion based paint with a Krylon clear coat to follow. My question is has anyone used Krylon Fusion before? If so how did it stand up? And secondly what paint is the preference of choice to most? Thanks in advance for the replies.

I wrapped it a long time ago and decided to do something different. when I took off the under wrap u see where the old epoxy was. I don't want to use such a long underwrap and gonna turn it into a spiral wrap. should I paint the blank? I don't want to. what

Hiya, I have a buddy that picked up a St. Croix Big Dawg rod a while ago that has a bunch of chips in the blue paint all down the blank. He's asking if I can make it look nice again. Never tackled a project like this. Any advice on how to fix the chips up? I'm not really sure how to fix it without the some type of paint or sealer or something... Appreciate the help!

Been asked to make a 5 foot 1 or 2 piece rod for a little girl. It will have a Zebco type reel and is going to be in pink. Thinking that fiberglass would be most forgiving but I can't seem to find any. And not sure how well paint would hold up on glass. Any suggestions, or if anyone has done this I would appreciate your input. I have done quite a few on the CRB blanks but they are 5'6"

Hi All, I am about to build my second rod. I think I am hooked, plus my friends are all putting in requests now! Just finished a white MHX843 with micro guides. Fished it several times now and love it. I wanted to look at different colours for blanks. Which vendor would have the best selection for different colours? Can a blank be painted? Is this process a difficult process to make it look

I've searched for a pink rod blank and can't find any that won't fade due to UV. Lamiglass had one, but it will eventually fade. Does anyone know a company that produces a quality blank and paints them with UV protection? I've read on this forum that some people use auto body shops to paint their blanks. What do you ask for when you request they paint a blank? Obviously pink paint, but is there a

So i hope this will be more brief than past threads. I am painting blanks right now and they are coming out very nice. Except i just got home and one blank i painted, which i wrapped two guides on, is having problems. The paint right next to the the wraps on the left of them is warped looking. It looks like is was pushed. it is about 3 or 4 'waves" like an accordion. very strange indeed. any

Hello gents, I have painted a few blanks with different paints for testing. I read of people using polyurethane spray to coat the blank after painting. Does anyone know if spar urethane will be a good choice? And are their any other clears anyone could recommend, that will yield flawless results? Thanks in advance, Keith

Wow the saga continues... Now that I have the air compressor, spray guns, Klasskote, house of color paint and other stuff rods still aren't coming out to hot. Was able to spray paint on with a problem but the clear coat looks terrible- grainy not silky smooth like when I used the spraymax. I think that the needle in my harbor frieght gun is too small to shoot the clear well. At .6 I just don't th

I see that some rode are epoxied from above the butt to the tip, and some are done over the wraps on the guides and butt wrap alone. Now I understand that epoxy affects the action of the blank. This particular rod is a heavy boat rod the old type with a wooden butt. So my question is this, if I did want to epoxy the . entire rod from butt wrap up do I just do the the thread work now, then

A few weeks ago somebody here mentioned a type of real epoxy that came in a spray can. The two parts somehow got mixed as the product was sprayed. I have searched for that topic but cannot find it. Can anyone steer me to it? I'm sure it had something to do with painting rod blanks. Thanks.

So after thinking about another post I responded to I got to thinking about something to make painting rod blanks easier. A couple of the problems I have found when painting a rod with a true auto spray gun is the rod position and overspray. I have a big exhaust fan setup in my garage which works well but it still lets some overspray out. Also I have been painting rods in a verticle positi

I would like to start by thanking everyone who responded to the last thread as it was greatly appreciated. I ended up using tamiya r/c polycarbonate paint on the blank I painted. I then used spraymax 2k clear over that three coats a half hour apart. I followed all the directions on spraymax can to the letter. The blank has now sat for 36 hours at 64-68 degrees. Problem- it isn't hard. Now exac

Well here I am finally upset enough to consider painting rod blanks. Some blanks are just awesome but come in (my opinion only) horrible colors. Therefore i now need to decide to get an airbrush kit, use spray paint, or a spray gun. I am leaning toward the airbrush only because it is only a few blanks that i want to do. I tried to use spray paint before- then put on permagloss which burned the pa

Hi this is my first post and i was wondering what i could use to hold the color of my wraps. I am trying to use a white thread that says it does not need color protectant, but on my test wraps when i applied the flex-coat the threds turned clear, I would really like to start making some head way on my pole and don't really want to wait for thread color protectant to be ordered. I heard that elmer

Just wondering if anyone building Ice rods and sanding the tips down has experienced tip twist after the build? I have been taking the 22" microlite blanks and only sanding the tip section a little more starting with 180-320-500-polishing cloth, then re-painting and finishing with PG. about a week after the rod has been wrapped on and epoxied the tip will twist about 90 degrees(I wrap a 001

I bought several old rods & reels at a 2nd hand place. Mostly I was looking for pieces to make reamers. A couple of the rods seemed to be in good shape except for the guides and tips. They also had numerous scratches. I removed the guides & tips and started looking on the internet for blank painting / repainting tips. A couple of articles talked about using Krylon spray paint for pla

Long time lurker on this forum. Have been admiring the amazing work turned out by the membership here and decided to join. I am looking to build a 904-4 fly rod for my son and would like to replicate the awesome colors of the Sage TCX series rods. I can mix colors and feel I can paint a blank with reasonable results, but due to painting over a gray blank and transparency issues, I'm not su

I'm trying to remove the thread wraps from an early 90's Daiwa rod. This stuff won't budge. It took me about two hours to get the guides cut loose, and what's left behind is the most stubborn epoxy I've ever seen. Tried heating with a hair dyer, lighter, alcohol lamp and hot water; to no avail. It simply will not soften. Any ideas?

A recently painted a rod with Krylon fusion, and coated over the paint with Minwax clear spray polyurethane. The finished product turned out beautifully, but I am not totally happy with the results, as the paint seems to chip VERY easily. I have put 2 coats of the spray poly on, is that not enough? Is there a different product that I should be using other than the Minwax? I've never used

Can anybody give me an idea of how to support the rod while its turning as I put rod varnish on? I'm baffled because where do you put the supports if the whole rod is covered with varnish?
