Here is my dilemma. I have gotten into more and more inshore fishing in recent years, specifically targeting seatrout but also flounder and redfish. I fish a lot of jerk baits and topwater in the 5/8 oz to 2 oz range. The fishing is very energetic so I don't want too heavy a blank. The L904 looks like I could make it work; thing is, I would really love a metallic blue blank. I know the MB904 is r

What is your age and years of rod wrapping experience? I am hopeful in discovering a good number of those under 25 interested in fabricating useful items, in our case fishing rods, rather than bending their necks and thumbs over a cell phone or video game. I am 63 and have been wrapping less than one year. Although the first blank purchased was over 20 years ago, I just recently realized what I h

Does anyone have any experience with Mad Dog Primer? A buddy told me that it would be excellent for priming rod blanks before painting.

Howzit guys, I do a lot of epoxy marbling and I often get request for light color's, the blanks I use are black so I've been mixing a batch of epoxy, adding white or light color pigment and applying a base coat before doing the actual marbling. This proses is time consuming and uses a lot of epoxy, have any of you tried any quicker drying primer to apply under the section to be marbled that's

Instead of painting a rod blank, could you wrap the blank between guides with a solid color vinyl wrap?

A glorious, good day to all you happy wrappers and a previous thank you to those replying to offer assistance. I have become very fond and respectful of the old FG rods from the 50’s and 60’s, restoring those with names / markings such as Conolon, Garcia, South Bend to their original condition. Others found without names, which were probably custom or home wrapped, I have removed the guides, fer

drawn/painted pictures on a rod blank using pigmented epoxy? (sort of like marbling but on a different level!) assuming the artist is good enough and quick enough, (and the brush fine enough!) is there any reason (that i cant see at the moment) why it cant be done? I'd just have a bash but the white blank i have is very sentimental and i need to be confident before i start... cheers, Ma

I have a customer that wants me to paint a blank with metallic paint. I have never painted a blank and don't even know if this should be done. Does it crack? What type paint? Does it change the action of the rod? Any feedback will be great. Thanks

--Hey everyone, Kinda new at this, only have built, or rebuilt I should say, one single rod. I searched everywhere for what paint to use and what clear coat to use and there was not a clear answer so I decided to experiment and then post the results to the forum for any other newbie looking for the right answer. I read a lot of people using Krylon Fusion, which I could only find Krylon Maxx

Is it possible to paint a blank and have it turn out nice, and if so what kind of paint would I need? Would I need to do any prep work on the blank? How would you seal it? Any information would be very helpful. Thank you

Originally posted in response to an older thread, but no response. Strangely a search for IM6 turned up 0 results. In any case it is in regard to the markings of the CRB IM6 blanks. Form example I would not fish 10 lb line on the rod rated for 6-10lbs. Anyways the rest is in the message: Am looking to get one of these built for myself to replace a Berkley rod that came with an Abu reel com

Hi All, many threads on painting blanks but I could not find one on Aluminum blanks. I have an old Mitchell Rod and Reel that I am redoing for my cousin. It is a sentimental piece or I prob would not bother with it lol. So, I have the Krylon (leather brown), I matched it and tried it on an old blank so that is good. 2 Main questions then: 1) Should I prime the blank since it's aluminum?

I have done a ton of painting blanks, but I am curious as to painting the aluminum hoods on reel seats. Would this be the same process as painting a blank? Has anyone done this with success since this component is in more close contact with hands and possibly rubbing off in the long run? What to use to paint it if I wanted to test the waters on it? Thanks in advance!

Hi guys, I'm looking at opening a business that makes rod blanks and would like any information on machinery and where to locate any equipment in the US. I've been talking with a rep from China and also Century Design Inc. I want to start small and work my way up. More specifically I'm looking for a used keyboard rolling table, cellophane wrapper, oven, wet sander, mandrel extractor and a pa

Well, after ironing out some rod blank issues with a supplier, I was able to start my first complete build this past week. I wish I was able to say I was able to complete the entire build, but I'm waiting on 2 running guides, one of which I'll need to complete the rod, that were back ordered from my initial components order. Happily, they were shipped late this past week, and I should have them i

I just wanted to take an opportunity to publicly thank Jamie Alderman of Mud Hole for all he did for me concerning a recent order I had placed with Mud Hole. Being new to rod building and purchasing components to build those rods, I wasn't sure what to expect from suppliers if something unexpected were to come up in relationship with an order. I now know what to expect from Mud Hole, and that is

Hi everyone, it's me again As the thread title says, I messed up my jerkbait rod. I won't go into the gorey details. Instead I'll just say that an experiment in extending a rod blank wouldn't have produced the rod I was hoping for. Being a bit disheartened by the would be results, and curious as to what the affects of trimming 6" off the butt of a blank would be .. the remaining piece of

I'm new to this and am going to refurbish a couple old fiberglass trolling rods. I did not measure before taking all of the old guides off and painting the blanks (dumb I know) and so now I'm at square one. I'm planning on putting a roller stripper and a roller top on them and regular boat guides in between not sure what sizes I need either? The reels will be Penn Senator 4/0 and 6/0. Actuall

After looking around the forum, I just cant seem to find a specific answer (or at least one that seems to suit me). So, let me ask a different version of an old question. If I paint a blank and want to give said paint extra protection WITHOUT the final finish cracking down the road after the blank has been subjected to normal use, what should I use? Is it automotive clear coat, polyurethane,

Well I searched the board and did not find the topic in question. I must be the only guy that expoxied the real seat ( Alps) and forgot to center it. Is there a way I can get it off and save the rod and seat? I looked at YouTube and did not find the answer I also need to remove the cork handle. I tried my electric hot gun to warm up the seat but nada. 2nd question. Can you use a spray paint li

I have finished painting 15 rods for a guide client. I used Duplicoat for the yellow rods and and Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch (seems to be similiar to Krylon Fusion) for the "Dukes of Hazard" orange and lime green rods. All of the blanks were painted several weeks ago. None of the paint cured as hard as I would like for a rod finish. Is U-40 PermaGloss a good over-coat for a tougher
