Hi, I am preparing to paint a blank for the first time. I painted 2 coast on a broken section of a rod as a tester to see how I would go - luckily. Painting the rod was easy, but I had issues when applying Permagloss. When I applied PG to the painted blank, it started to take the paint off, and you could see the blank underneath! I was using a make up pad to apply the PG. I th

Unsure of what this title of this should be. After some practice wraps with light thread on a black surface i have found the common problem that has been discussed many times on this board "dark background+light thread=changing of thread color" so my question is what is the easiest way to paint the 1' or 1/2 inch location on the blank where the guide wraps will be? i also had this pr

Curious I am building a split grip crankbait rod, and was thinking of adding some color just on the blank in the area between the butt and rear grip. Building on a Baston CB70M, and thought that a little color would look great in this area.. Would you reccomend this or another method. Also love that Carbon Fiber look on some rods, where can you get this? Any ideas or suggestions or instruction

Hi All, I searched and found most of my information on this topic, but just want to clarify a few things. I have an old fiberglass rod that I want to rebuild and re-colour for a friend. Do I need to scrap all the old paint off this rod, or can I just sand it to prepare the surface for spraying? I am not worried too much about weight, as this is only a 6' rod and will only be used a f

Does anyone know what method a factory uses to apply color to a blank? I have done a search and found a ton of info on subject but could not find this answer. How hard is it to duplicate that process?

I have a customer whom wants a rod built from a G Loomis blank for a girl. She wants it purple with silver glitter. Any suggestions on how to prep blank, type of paint, and sealer? Did anyone see the St Croix factory on how its made? It was interesting to see their dynamioc analyzer. They were saying that if a rod breaks in one place its a dud. If it breaks in several its a good rod. These rods that broke were being tested to a level (Newton Meters) over what the rods were rated for to see what they could take. The rolling machine was interesting. I sure would like to get a

I did a search and can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. I want to refinish a rod. It appears under the existing guide wraps that there was no gloss finish (for lack of a better term) used under the wraps. It almost looks like the rod was wrapped and then the gloss finish put on the entire rod after this. Would they do that??? I'm thinking of air brushing the rod for an even fin

You look up at the cieling, and there are holes everywhere. For those who have 12' high cielings, you might not get this. It looks like somoene sprayed droplets of water all over your benchtop. Anyoen who is extremey careful applyign epoxy finish won't have a clue what I'm talking about. You see a stack of rods with wood handles, broken guides, and clear tips piled into a corner. In the

I have a Fenwick SU 1389 rod I want to redo. I have had this rod since 1975. What can I use to clean it. It is stained from use. A friend said use acetone, and also told me to post the question on this site. I have built rods, but not in the class you guys do.

I currently have a student taking my rod building class that instead of building my default more basic class project rod wanted to build a Batson RX7 Swimbait 7' 10" 1 piece, 25 - 45 line, 3 - 8 oz. lure matte clear finish for the class project. He does a lot of fishing in Arkansas for BIG Striper Bass. To my surprise he asked me if it would be possible to paint this blank to add some

Howdy, I've come across several posts about painting blanks and have been drawn to Duplicolor Mirage. Manufacturer's photos look wild. Also saw several posts about Mirage that are from some years back. So I'm wondering.......... Have these paint jobs held up over the years? If not, why? If so, what helped? Has the Mirage 3 step system been adequate for a rod blank? If not, why? Is there a

I have several rods that have begun to flake. I am talking about the finish on the actual blank, not the epoxy. You can rub your fingernail on the rods and what looks like dead skin comes off. These are saltwater rods - yes, they have been washed after use. Is there something that can be done to stop this process, and restore the blanks? I ran a few searches, but came up empty handed. The

I have some un-colored blanks I wanted to color and have read several posts on here about permagloss and its use. It seems like adding a tint / color to permagloss would be a good way to go. I was kind of hoping for a translucent finish vs. opaque like spray paint. Any success or failures out there? Recommendations for color to use as tint? Thanks!
