151. Finish Problem
I end up with several bands of what appears to be frayed thread, and small spikes scattered randomly under my finish coat!!!!!!! they appear in 3/32 (approximate) bands while applying finish!!!!!
I'm using Thread Master High build, mixed thoroughly .
I've tried mixing smaller batches (1/2 tsp &1/2 tsp), some with acetone and some with out acetone. My last attempt being 1tsp "A&quo

Hello
Been building for a few years now. Built a dozen rods so far, looking to improve my work. I have built a rod drying box and am working on creating a thread finish station with a shelf/hand rest, this should help my thread finishing.
Been using flex coat light finish on all my rods with modest success, I feel its too hard to control for me especially with only a 22rpm finish motor.

153. ChromaSeal
Just tried Chromaseal for the first time and was a bit surprised to see that you are suppose to wait overnight after the last coat is applied. Is that really necessary?
Thanks,

I found some DuraClear DS19 "Varnish" as they call it but the MSDS reads waterbase non-yellowing UV protected flexible exterior Polyurethane.
It's original intent is to overcoat paintings to keep the colors from fading out when exposed to strong lights & sunlight and I of course thought possibly it might work for rod wrapping.
I ran up a test stick on some 1/2" white PVC

Is it best to brush on color preserver or not? How do you get thread color to keep its original dry color look? Or is this just impossible? Thanks

156. Finish over labels
Need some help on how to get finish smooth over labels. I notice some ripples on the blank when putting finish over the label. The label is smooth with finish but connecting in the exposed area gives me problems. Any help will be greatly appericated.

OK Guys,
Ive got a ask the pros a question,, I was fishing with one of my rods today and notice the finish was coming uni-laminated from the blank., After thinking about this, the only thing I can come up with is that when I apply CP I run past the wraps a little to make sure I get good coverage, then when I go back over it with finish I run past the wraps about the same amount.

158. White thread
I understand that using white thread on a dark blank can result in some fading of the white color. I will be using Gudebrod NCP size D thread on this wrap and will apply color preserver to the wrapped thread. I have read that painting the blank white will help with this problem. My question is ....what type paint is recommended for this process. Any advice on properly applying the paint will also

161. Trilobal polyester
Anyone have any experience with Coats and Clarke Trilobal polyester? I tried it, Used 2 good coats of CP and it still got dark on me. It was lime green, canery yellow and tangerine over a black underwrap...It came out darker, slightly translucent(not bad) and somewhat splotchy...Am I just using the wrong product thread wise or can this thread work?

I am starting to use CP more on guide wraps, and was wondering how many coats of finish you usually use. I usually only use one coat on guides with epoxy only.
Thanks,
Marc

163. Color Preserver
OK, Gotta have a rod done by saturday, and I am out of CP (18 month old daughter dumped it). Cannot drive 65 miles to little Rock to buy some tonight. Any household chemicals that will work? I considered diluting some elmers glue with water will that work, has anyone tried it? I usually order everything I need but this just came up. Gonna finish it with perma gloss if that matters.
Thanks

Well, my first trolling rod finally caught a fish. I lent it to my Uncle last week and they picked up a white marlin on it! Time to order another decal! I started work recently on my Uncle's trolling uppers to go with his Unibutts. Calstar 655XXH blanks, AA Rollers, black/gold threads. I had gotten the ferrules/nuts and foregrips prepper and glued and prepped the guide feet and had everythin

I recently used a very light coat of the MinWax Polyurethane semi-gloss to seal a feather inlay and was wondering if I can now finish with LS Supreme? Perma Glos? Threadmaster?
Thanks, Mike

166. CP question
I have read and understand about the use of color preserver possibly making guide wraps weaker due to the CP sealing the wrap and not letting the finish soak thorough the thread. I'm pretty new to this, and the only rods I've done thus far have been done without CP. I'm working on a rod right now, and I really like the colors as they are, but I know that when I apply my finish it will darken and

167. I heart CP
As a rookie I have been hesitant to use CP. When I started out I was concerned only with function and wanted nothing to do with anything 'fancy'. Now I realize this mindset was more a result of lack of knowledge and skill rather than what I 'thought' I wanted. I now appreciate everything that you guys say and show.
That being said, to all the other rookies out there, CP rocks. It usually takes

I've been building rods for 20 years and this has never happened before (of course, I never use CP, only 5-10 times total but never a problem) . I bought some diamondite CP recently to try it out. First try was good, but I put it on a set of shaded wraps (from white to purple) and all the wraps truned mostly black with some purple showing after the epoxy was applied. I thought maybe the dark bla

I note a number of references to the problem of fisheyes in finish coats with Madeira Polyneon due to the silicone lubricant treatment of the thread for its primary purpose of sewing machine use.
The auto spray industry uses an anti silicon additive in respraying vehicles treated with silicone polishes.
This is also used in the surfboard manufacturing industry with polyester resins.

172. First Rods Started!!
Well, after playing some butt halves of rods to make Kite rods for Shark fishing, I got my St. Croix blanks in and started on them!
I had made a basic V block wooden stand with felt lined V's and practice wrapping on the kite rods, wrapping them, Forhan lock, CP and epoxy. When It cured, I would strip down and do it over again for practice. The V stand was ok, but had its limitations due to
