Several years ago I built a fly rod (casts beautifully but cosmetically it is easy to tell it is a first rod) Anyway I am going to try it again and looking thru my old material I found a bottle of color preservative that I never opened, would it still be good? Probably 10 years old

Hi all. Since I started building a couple years ago I've used FlexCoat color preserver, but sometimes it's too thick or full-bodied for my liking. So I started using Chromaseal and that seems more user friendly for me. Anyway, on my current rod I applied a Decal Connection decal and brushed on Chromaseal. But the CP ran off the decal like water off a duck's back. I let that dry a couple hour

I've read and heard conflicting information. Is the thread treated with silicone, or some other lubricant? I've heard yes. I've heard no. Thought I'd ask the experts on this forum. Thanks

Being a relatively new rod builder, I would appreciate insight into the significance to strength and durability of treating thread with color preservative. It seems the consensus is that color preservative causes the connection between the blank and wrapping to be not as strong as untreated thread. My question is, how significant is the deficiency and should treating or using treated thread be av

I am just starting to build rods and I have a question that hopefully can be anwered. I have just wrapped a rod with mudhole tigerthread. I applied color preserver on the thread before I added the thread finish. I ended up with really dark spots and some with light spots I was wondering how can I get an even color level with this type of thread. Again I am just starting out so I know i may be do

I'm new to rod building, have built 6 or 7 rods, have not used any color preserver because my thread is colorfast..... nonetheless I'm thinking I could get a better result with color preserver. What are the differences between them, and which do you use and why? Thanks for responses. Sid

My patterns are not coming out on the crisper side of things. They tend to run together , still looking nice, but it is not the effect I am wanting. Do you let the rod finish set up a little before doing the marbling, to keep the design crisper? I am using regular prokote. Thanks

I've heard that it's possible to use embrodiery thread to wrap rods. Is this a good idea? And, if so, are there any special conditions that accompany it's use?

I'm doing my first decorative wrap and using Billy's Royal Blue shade pack. I'd like to add an intermediate color between two colors in the pack. I've got that color in a Prowrap thread. Since I'd like to complete the wrap this weekend I'm asking if it OK to use the Prowrap and Madeira together? If not I'll order what I need and do it next weekend. I've looked at both JoAnn and Hancock and ne

I've got a couple of questions about color preserver. I've used it occasionally in the past without significant problems, and frankly, I've personally never seen a wrap fail due to coming unwound after color preserver was used. Questions: 1. Does it's use negatively affect the overall strength of the wrap to an unacceptable degree as the finish can't penetrate the threads as well? 2. For t

I recently bought some polyester embroidery thread in several twist colors. On a sample blank I tried each color with CP and then finish, urethane and then finish, and finish alone. To my surprise the only samples that repelled the finish were the ones with CP. I used 2 flood coats and let them dry overnight before applying the finish. Has this happened to any of you . I used a very popular bran

How can I see what the color of thread will look like before applying epoxy? I thought that I remember something about how you can do this. Thank you.

Howdy all Quick question... just finished my first decorative wrap... it an open wrap (elongated chevrons) using Madeira thread... i plan on a few coats of CP (chromaseal) but have a question... when coating a large open wrap do folks recommend only coating the threads or do you cover the whole section of the wrap including the exposed blank with the CP... what are best practices here if a

Hey guys, I have been using Madeira for a little while now and have run across issues with it and color preserver (I have been usung flex coat color preserver). Basically when I have a pattern with dark colors under lighter colors I still get some color bleed through even with color preserver. Have any of you noticed this? Is this an issue only with flex coat brand? Any advice would be app

Hi this is my first post and i was wondering what i could use to hold the color of my wraps. I am trying to use a white thread that says it does not need color protectant, but on my test wraps when i applied the flex-coat the threds turned clear, I would really like to start making some head way on my pole and don't really want to wait for thread color protectant to be ordered. I heard that elmer

i put another coat of finish on last night, when i checked this morning there were a few spots, i guess fisheyes, where it looked like the epoxy "repelled". i was gonna put another coat on anyway; what do i need to do before the final coat? what did i do wrong to cause this? the finish is over pro wrap ncp and metallic if that helps and the wraps were first coated with chromaseal and

I am just getting back in to rod building after not building a rod for a couple of years and was wondering what color preserver to use.. In the past I used Gudebrod that is not available any more. i just finished a rod and used Cason's Crystal CP and did not like it, the guide tunnels were dark and thread color that was underneath other thread showed through. Can someone give me a suggestion on

So I am working on a surf pole for a family member, and decided to go with a purple and pink combination. I got the purple and pink from Madeira and know that it needs CP but was going to use gudebrod metallic threads to accent it. Will the CP affect the gudebrod? And if so how many coats should I put on? - Thanks - Tyler

Hey guys... am still somewhat of a newbie so I imagine it's operator error. That said, after I apply 2 to 3 coats of CP and then a thin coat of epoxy, I'm getting a silver-ish color randomly on my wraps? Any suggestions or advice? Thanks in advance.

I'm new to rod building and have completed 4 or 5 with another underway. I'm pretty happy with my progression in skills so far. I've come a long way. Actually, I hated building that first rod, and even the second I was wondering why I decided to try doing this. But I'm actually starting to enjoy this madness now. Where I still seem to be fumbling around, is in applying glass to the rod to

Used chromoseal for the first time yesterday over an Fishhawk 221 A orange nylon thread on a Rainshadow RX8 904 blank. Put it on liberally and let dry on rotating dryer. There are dark blotchy areas that look like dirty water marks that became apparent within an hour and faded somewhat but never completely resolved even after 24 hrs. Any ideas? The wrap was tight. The CP bottle inverted severa

I have had this issue before, but not as bad. I have three spots on this wrap that just won't take finish. 2 coats light, 1 coat high, and 1 coat light with sanding between the last two coats in the problem areas and the finish is still repelling. Now the wrap is starting to look lumpy where the finished has repelled away. So how do you get the finish to stick when this occurs? I've had this issu
