Finish Problem

I end up with several bands of what appears to be frayed thread, and small spikes scattered randomly under my finish coat!!!!!!! they appear in 3/32 (approximate) bands while applying finish!!!!!

I'm using Thread Master High build, mixed thoroughly .

I've tried mixing smaller batches (1/2 tsp &1/2 tsp), some with acetone and some with out acetone. My last attempt being 1tsp "A" \ 1tsp "B" same result. The last attempt I used just enough acetone to make a minute change in viscosity.

What is odd is I wrapped some Maderia on a broken rod piece and put 3 coats of ChromaSeal CP, let it dry for a while and the Thread Master went on great---no lumps--smooth as I would like it at this stage of my game. Therefore, while my technique needs improving, its not my biggest problem. I think its the thread that is the problem, but I don't know how to correct this.

I am using GudeBrod NCP which I find leaves lightly fuzzy renderings....I even tried flaming them off, but I'm afraid to create other problems with the flame.

To get an almost acceptable finish, I have to take a fingernail filing stick and grind down the finish after 24 hrs of curing...... clean off the residuals and re-apply.

At this point I am stumbling.

It sounds like a thread issue. If you dont tension from the spool but rather through thread it can cause this. Also if your skin is rough and the thread passes through your fingers this caan happen. Also dont rule out a bad spool of thread. Pull some off and look at it with a magnifying glass.

Hold the thread up between you & a light background. Pull tension on the thread and watch
closely (use magnification). Watch all the tiny hairs pop straight out as you stretch it then send it back to where
you got it.

Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it..

Fred, Raymond both of you are spot on!. A bad spool of thread. with my magnifiers it looks like a miniature cactus! I checked another spool of the same color and its slick.

Thanks a lot fellows!

While they aren't your problem, you might want to stop trying smaller batches of finishes, or thinning with acetone. These things lead to other problems which will eventually jump up and bite you in the butt.

Like everyone else here said you probably got a bad spool of thread or something is wrong with your tension hardware. Something is fuzzing your thread. Find that and you can correct the problem. But stop messing around with your finish.

Roy,
I assume you already have; but if you haven't be sure to CHUCK that spool of thread into the garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take care
Roger

Also,
Be sure to check any other theread that you use on a rod FIRST - under a magnifying glass, bright light\t, and tension -- BEFORE you use that spool on a rod.

Better to throw a bad spool away into the GARBAGE - before you get any of this bad thread on a rod.

Don't keep it around with the idea that you will use it for something else, because when you aren't looking, that thread will end up on another rod, and you will have the issue again.

No, you shouldn't get any thread like this from a supplier, but don't fight it - pitch it and move on.

Take care
Roger

Very good points Roger.

I was going to keep the thread for making flies, and without thinking it would have worked its way back unto my unsuspecting rod wrapper..

It has joined the used epoxy mixing cups, sitting in my garbage can::)

Have a great day

and thanks a lot to all who have responded.
