Another finish question. When you sand your finish to eliminate the fuzzies what do you use to wipe it off? Do you use denatured alcohol with a rag? Will a cotton rag leave more lint on the wraps? What can I use?

Thanks for the replies. One thing I have to do is install better lighting. The thread I am using is Fishhawk Variegated burgundy. It looks great.

Is it possible to burnish thread wraps so roughly that it causes fuzzies? Can they be so fine so as not to be seen in less than optimal light conditions in which I work? I burnished some wraps with a steel pair of tweezers and I'm wondering if that's the problem. Maybe I caused them?

Thanks, Mike. I should have known better this last time. I've built enough rods. We always learn something each time we build. Bruce

Three times in the past few years I've gone by rod blank tip top sizes provided by the manufacturer only to find out they were not that size. This has forced me to pay postage for one tip top. Can someone recommend a tip top assortment kit and a winding check assortment kit? I've been trying to wade through our sponsors, but I haven't found one. Thanks Hi Bill!

336. trim wrap
I use the nail knot method to place trim wraps. My question, how do I keep the trim wrap tight and from coming undone before I place the finish? Thanks

I didn't know how to post this, but I'll give it a shot. I'm looking for some ideas (patterns) to place wraps on the blank near the winding check of my fly rod. I don't want to do a feather inlay. I'm not sure where to look in the photos for ideas. Would some one please direct me? I will be using a hook keeper, too. Thanks, Bruce

I started with 3 guides and the tip top. I taped them down, put on a reel, flexed the rod and moved them accordingly to the load. I only used three guides plus the tip top. It seemed fine to me and my buddy has no complaints. I'm not sure that's the best method. Maybe some guys with more experience can make some suggestions. Bruce

I'm finishing an ice rod with an eva foam handle. I don't have a winding check to fit and I'm looking for ideas for making a nice transition. I have wrapped thread right up to the handle, but it doesn't cover the gap. Thanks, Bruce

I would like some help ordering guides for a solid glass ice rod. I never ordered for an ice rod and I'm not sure if they're the same as for a regular sized rod. I'm building an ultra light 36 inch rod. It has a 2.5 tip and a .149 butt end. I would like the ring part to be bigger than what I've seen on other ice rods to help prevent them from icing. Thanks, Bruce

Yep, I turn on a space heater in the room I'm working in and it gets the temps up to about 75 or 80. The normal temperature in the room is only about 63. I don't worry about shortening the drying time. I've been getting a good result with this method and I'm not changing a thing. One thing for sure I found out about finishing is that once you get a consistent finish don't change a thing. My shor

I can't find it now, but someone asked a question about using double sided tape in rod building. For what do you use it? I never have and I'm wondering how it's used in the process. I always learn something new on the forum. Thanks, Bruce

I posted previously about using fluorescent fly tying thread to make the tip visible for strikes. How about a different approach? Is there a fluorescent paint I could put near the tip top that I could cover with finish? I have a waterbased fluorescent orange paint. Maybe I could forget thread, paint the area where the thread would be orange and then cover with finish? Just thinking. Bruc

Hi. I'm building an ice rod for a buddy. I was wondering that for the tip top guide, to make it more visible to strikes, if I could wrap it with fluorescent orange fly tying thread? I think I have it in 6/0 or 3/0. Thanks, Bruce

Yeah, Roger, I'm with you. I can't write legibly. I've practiced and practiced writing on blanks and after 6 years I haven't been satisfied with one. I guess I'll just keep using decals. I was thinking maybe if I would trace my name on the wood and then burn it it might not be too hard. But I've never done it beforeand I was just hoping. Bruce

Do you think wood burning would be easier than trying write with my own hand? I think I could make a pattern in pencil and then follow it with the burner. I may be wrong about that but that's what I'm thinking.

I was wondering, do you think it would be possible to burn your name and rod info into the wood spacer of the fly rod? I mean opposite the side the reel will be placed? Bruce

I had a discussion with Tom about what size guides to use on a rod and how do you determine what size to use. If I understood him he said to use the smallest guides that will do the job. So, I'm going to build a couple of 9ft. 4 and 5 wt. rods. Could I get size 12 & 6 stripping guides and use number 1s the entire length. I've never understood how you determine guide size. Have they always ju

I was reading static guide placement and it occurred to me that this probably gives you the best placement. Is that true? Also, Is it also possible that you might need lessa number guides than most guide spacing charts recommend when you use this method? Thanks
