I thought I posted this question before, but I can't find in my posts. I apologize if I posed this question before, I just want to be sure.
Will humidity bother the drying of the finish on my guides? I've always been afraid to apply guide finish in the hot summer months. Will air conditioning bother the finish?

303. thread/trim
I'm using "Stay True Thread" size D thread, which has the color locked in so you don't have to use CP. My question, will the part of my silver trim wrap locked under my working thread show through when I apply finish?

Nice Barry. I did a few tonight myself and they didn't come out too bad. It made me feel like a "big shot pro" rod builder. HA! HA!

Kurt's tutorial is what I'm looking to try. I guess to you guys this is very simple, but it's my first attempt. It doesn't look too complicated. I'm going to practice a bit and then give it a t

Can someone recommend a tutorial on how to do a simple embedded spiral wrap? I used a search, but couldn't come up with any.

307. Re: First Rod Blues
These guys are advising you wisely, they know of what they speak. Do not rush your work. You must be patient. If things start to go wrong walk away from the rod until you are mentally refreshed. I learned that from this forum. I usually wait until the next day to begin again. I'm no expert, but I usually wrap 4 guides at one sitting and leave it go until the next day.

Hi Tom. I think Schneiders Rod Shop may have them, but I can't figure out how to navigate their site.

I've been trying to find these guides to purchase and I would like to buy them from a sponsor. I can't seem to find them, although I'm sure they are mainstream guides.
They are:
VDLG - 08 x 2
VDLG - 10 x 1
VDLG - 16 x 1
VDLG - 20 x 1
VDLG - 40 x 1

313. Re: Rainshadow RX7
Hi. I'm speaking of 10 to 15 inch trout on medium size streams. I guess what I need is a rod that will cast dries about 30 feet and will handle highstick nymphing.
Thanks,
Bruce

314. Rainshadow RX7
I'm looking for a rod blank that will cast a decent dry fly and can be used to fish nymphs sizes 14 to 20. Would you say the Rainshadow RX7, 4 or 5 WT. would fit those requirements? I'm thinking it would, but opinions are always appreciated.
Thanks

I have always hesitant to apply rod finish in the heat and humidity of summer because I'm afraid it won't harden. I do mine in the fall and winter. Can I apply finish in an air conditioned apartment?

317. Redoing guides
I've posted a couple weeks ago about a fiberglass noodle rod on which I am replacing the guides. I have the old guides removed and the old finish cleaned from the blank.
My question, does the blank have to be baby's butt smooth before I put on the new guides? I don't want to scrape anymore because I am afraid of damaging the blank.
Thanks,
Bruce

I'd be interested in ice fishing blanks myself, but I did a search and didn't find much. The first search I used "ice fishing blanks" and in another search "ice fishing".

Hi Nick. Yes, I'm referring to the leftover epoxy around the guides. Sorry, I should have been more clear.

Guys, this rod is a glossy fiber glass blank. I'm sure that makes a difference as to how I remove the finish, right? or wrong?

321. Removing Old Finish
I have all of the guides and thread removed from an old fiber glass rod I'm going to refinish. Some of the old finish remains on the rod. I think I read a post that suggested soaking a graphite rod in hot water would soften old finish allowing for easy removal. Can I do this with a fiber glass rod blank? I've already broke most of my fingernails trying to scratch old finish off and that's gettin

322. Re: Refinishing Rod
Thanks, Guys. I'm going to strip all of the guides and wraps down to the handle, clean. I agree it will be more professional and it's representing my work so I want to do my best. Thanks for the opinions.

323. Refinishing Rod
I'm refurbishing a 9' Eagle Claw fiber glass rod for a buddy. I have the guides removed and I'm now down to the dirty work of removing the finish.
My Question. Should I redo the thread wraps on the handle, female ferrule, etc.? They are in perfect condition. My buddy says he doesn't care if the thread is a perfect match as long as I replace the guides.

My buddy showed me a Fenwick HMG Graphite 4 WT. fly rod he bought about 30 years ago. He never used it and it's new. I cast it in the yard and it really feels great. Can these be found any more? The numbers on the rod are: HMG 4 WtT. GFF 704-2, 2 1/2oz., AFPMA Line No. 4. Is there a blank similar to this old model?

I'm not a pro, but mine only turns one way and my finish is fine. I understand the idea though.

I use a variable speed dremel and I think it works fine. I can also use it for many other projects, so it's well worth the money.

327. Decent Cork Rings
I don't have a lot of experience with cork rings, but enough to know that top grade cork is very expensive. Can anyone recommend mid-priced cork that's decent. I'm not expecting something for nothing but I can't afford to pay top prices.

Has anyone ever used spar urethane as a finish? I was reading the info on a can of the stuff and it seems as though it might work. I thought I read one time that people once used spar varnish. Is it the same as spar urethane?
