I posted previously about using fluorescent fly tying thread to make the tip visible for strikes.


How about a different approach? Is there a fluorescent paint I could put near the tip top that I could cover with finish? I have a waterbased fluorescent orange paint. Maybe I could forget thread, paint the area where the thread would be orange and then cover with finish? Just thinking.

I think that's a much more effective way to do what you want.

Can I apply finish over water based paint?

I think it will work ok if you CP it in between.

Another option would be to slide a bright colored plastic bead (similar to what you find on a walleye snelled spinner rig) on the barrel of the tip top. I do this on most of my deadsticks. You can even get the soft plastic beads from owner that glow in the dark. Nice when your in a shack at low light times.

You can also add glow in the dark powder to you finish. A small amount wont show up much in daytime but will still be bright in the dark especially if put over a lighter colored or fluorescent paint.

I did one once and just colored my epoxy. Just like marbeling, used Flourescent Testors model paint (just the thick pigment at the bottom) and mixed a tiny bit with my finish epoxy. I applied a thin coat to the last two inches of the blank and thought it turned out well.

Hi Chris. Sounds interesting. What is a little bit of testors and how much finish? Will I be able to see it as I add it? If you could give me an idea I would appreciate it.

I just buy the Testors model paint from the hobby store to be used for marbling. I always look for the bottles that have been sitting a while where you can see the pigment separated and settled on the bottom. Pour off the liquid on the top and you have the pigment you can use to color your epoxy. If you need more information do a search for marbling and you'll come up with lots of info on this technique. Just start with a little tiny bit on the tip of a toothpick. You will be able to see the color as you mix it in so you'll be able to get the right color before you apply.
