I just use the cheap ones from a 5 & Dime type store and ditch them when the rod is done.

You'll be fine with experience. It's tough to do, but try to stay patient, and experience will solve the problem. Check this site and go to Youtube. You can pick up things to straighten the curve. We didn't have all of these resources when I began building. Patience will help and experience will see you through.

I never noticed a smell with Flex Coat and that's all I've ever used. Maybe I haven't been paying attention to it.

I didn't want to jump the other discussion so I started a new one. What blank is similar to the St. Croix SCIV-SCII?

I've used it, not on all rods, but I haven't noticed a difference. I build freshwater fly rods.

Yes, please listen to the above advice, William. When I was learning I tried to paint on the epoxy and always had problems. Then, I learned from this site, and a Flex Coat video, how to apply epoxy properly.

I wrap my tip tops. I just think it looks nicer, but that's totally a personal choice.

That would be awesome. They make my favorite fly rod blank the SCIV-SCII. I was bummed when they quit making them.

Wow, what bad luck, but at least you were able to fix it. That's something I never contended with, but it's very possible.
