17431. Re: guide wrapping problem
Believe it or not, but this is something that is just going to take some time. Power wrapping requires practice and it will take many dozens and dozens of guides until you become proficient. There is a speed and thread angle that will work (provided you have indeed done a good job prepping the guide foot to the proper taper) and you'll find it after a hundred or so guide wraps under power.

17432. Re: 5S66LF vs 3S66LF
The actions would be identical. The weight, however, will be different and this will make the SCV react and recover more quickly.
Having said that, don't think the SCIII is a dog - it isn't.

17435. Re: Drying Bubbles
The resin can crystalize in colder temps. Even if it only happens partially, this often leaves tiny particles in the stuff. They can appear as "nubs" or small protrusions in the final finish. This could be what you've experienced.

Bob,
A forum is not quite the same thing as a magazine. What appears in RodMaker, regardless of who wrote it, belongs to me. The information is still the author's but the articles (text, photos, layout, etc.) as they appeared belong to me.

17438. Re: Drying Bubbles
It has nothing to do with the brand - a company couldn't stay in business producing an epoxy that behaved like that for no reason.
If the rod has sat overnight, then the finish should be set well enough that no more bubbles, pits, etc., are going to form at that time. Are you sure this isn't happening in the first few hours?
"Bubbles" are one thing, fish eyes are another. Are you

17439. Re: trolling and stand up
For stand-up style fishing, you're in a direct tug of war against the fish. With a short enough rod, you reduce the leverage the fish has against you and if you're stronger than he is, you'll whip him quickly.
Offshore trolling entails (usually) a chair which allows much of the fish's power to fall on the chair and harness, taking a good deal of strain off the angler. Longer rods are (and can

17440. Re: Spinning vs Baitcasting?
I don't think anyone said that spinning reels "cannot" be used to throw heavy weights. Only that they were not designed for that type of thing and have some inherent properties that make it a bit more difficult than casting heavy sinkers with a baitcasting reel.

17441. Re: Just pondering,
Whatever you do, you need to get everything in writing.
Now, you need to understand that most tackle carries a larger mark up than what you may be able to offer them. For instance, let's say you need to get $200 out of rod. They may well expect to make at least $100 on that same rod, so that would drive the price to $300. And don't forget to charge them excise tax at the rate of a full 10% or

17442. Re: Three or Four paw chucks
Remove the chuck you have now and look at the spindle. Most likely, it has a Morse Taper for holding a drive spur. But what about outside of that? Do you see any threads on the spindle?
Sometimes a set screw is simply for locking the threaded chuck in place. My OneWay Talon chuck threads onto the spindle, but has 2 set screws in addition.

The reel seat goes on first, then the grip.
Fly rods are built like any other rod, but the seat is on the butt of the rod and the grip is ahead of it.

17444. Re: Tiger wrap woes.
Right, if you read both articles in the magazine on the technique, you should notice that the first thread layer is wound with very little tension and the second layer is wound with more tension. The sacrificial thread is simply unwound - the rod should easily turn backwards as the thread just falls off at the rod turns. Take the belt off the motor and the rod will turn much easier - pulling on

17445. Re: Tubing for extensions
For longer extensions on light rods, aluminum in sufficient wall thickness is going to be a tad heavy. If you can fine scrap blank material, as heavy walled as the butt of your blank, you'll be better off.

17446. Re: Spinning vs Baitcasting?
Surf casting with heavy lures and sinkers shows that a spinning reel has an inherent flaw - the line will either tear your finger off or the spool will slip as power is applied. But this isn't so much a function of casting deficiency as it is the fact that spinning reels are not able to be used in situations where very heavy weights are cast. They weren't designed for it.
On the flip side, it

You can only tighten the chuck up so much on an item like a rod blank. Make sure you wind a few turns of masking tape around the blank butt before installing it in the chuck. This will greatly aid in keeping the rod from slipping loose in the chuck.

17448. Re: Fly rods
If you don't put alignment marks on both ends of the ferrule, you won't have anything to reference with. One mark is going to be hard to line up unless you have another to mate it to. Perhaps I'm missing your question here.

The amount of energy you're talking about; the amount of oscillatory line movement between say, a #6 and #2 guide is so small as to be far outside the bounds of anything you would or could ever notice or measure. Anyone that pushes that notion is selling snake oil. I know you don't mean it that way so please don't take offense to that statement, but that's about what it amounts to in a real world

MIcro guides don't cause a rod to cast further. Weight reduction does. "Micro" guides do reduce weight over larger more conventional guides, so they're indirectly responsible. But it is the weight reduction that's important.
I'm afraid too many consumers are going to miss this point about getting weight off the blank and simply think there is something magic about the guides themselv

The rear grip and seat location depends on the harness you'll be using. If you won't be using one, then that point is mute.
Are you using the rod on a rail? Not? What's comfortable in your shop may not be what's comfortable on the water. It all depends on these other variables. You need to put the rod into the same situation in which you'll be using it and then you can determine the proper

Any load causes the line to pull directly between any pair of guides. If you put too few guides on the blank, the blank will be put into a flex/shape that would not happen if the line was simply tied to the tip and the load applied there.
The article in RodMaker used photos to show the difference in flex patterns the same blank took on when different guide spacings and numbers of guide were u

17454. Re: Spine question
A spiral wrapped rod makes the rod inherently stable so spine is of absolutely no concern. I build on the straightest axis. You can do whatever you want.
The line will automatically transition to the bottom of the rod very quickly - if you'll let it. This is what the Simple Spiral does. It allows the line to quickly move to the bottom of the rod. Other spiral wrap systems attempt to keep the l

I'd call one of the sponsors listed to the left. They're all able and willing to discuss blank selection with you. Let them know what you have and see what they offer that meets or exceeds those Powell models.
There are just so many really good blanks at such good prices these days that it's hard to quickly narrow your choices down to just 1 or 2 makes.

17458. Re: casting distance
To answer your original question - you're not doing anything wrong other than comparing apples to oranges. If the blanks were identical, and so too the handle, seat and guide set ups, then the longer rod would most likely give you greater distance. But there are so many other variables here which aren't even close to be identical that you really can't compare the 2 rods and their casting abiliti
