Tubing for extensions

What would be the minimum wall thickness for aluminum tubing when extending, let's say, bass blanks? Would it be dependent on the butt diameter of the blank, the length of the extension, or the wall thickness of the blank? I recently ordered some tubing from Speedy Metals that had a wall thickness of .058 (had to get 5/8 O.D. to get correct I.D.) and I can tell a definite weight increase in the finished blank. I know there will be some but I'd like to get it even lower. Is .035 wall too thin? Re: Tubing for extensions

How much are you extending & where will the overlap section be located on the rod ???? Re: Tubing for extensions

Greg,
Rather than aluminum, use another section of rod blank to extend the blank. Simple, easy, light and straight forward. Plenty of scrap blanks out there. Cut out the section you need and extend at will. Take care Roger Re: Tubing for extensions

For longer extensions on light rods, aluminum in sufficient wall thickness is going to be a tad heavy. If you can fine scrap blank material, as heavy walled as the butt of your blank, you'll be better off.

Like Roger said. Glass scrap, and they are also tapered to fit the blank you are extending. Bill - willierods.com Re: Tubing for extensions

Greg,
Go over to your local good will store and pick up a few different rods for a couple of $$. Then, if you need extensions, you can simply chop them up as needed, scrape off any guides, finish or other things and use these for extensions. Inexpensive and very functional. Take care Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
