I had to go back and reread it several times. Good work. Thanks for posting it Larry. I noticed this quote >And of course, we tested the hypothesis that the stiffest rod would be the best for getting distance.< I still come back to the same conclusion that you cannot simply keep going stiffer and stiffer and expect to cast farther and farther. At some point you will not have enough ca

I did not find anything really surprising there. There is a sweet spot on any rod for any given casting weight. Even if you took a 5 ounce lead sinker and cast it with different surf rods you would have one that was more closely matched in Power, or ERN or whatever you want to call it that would cast the longest distance. I have some old Hatteras type heavers that are stiff as broomsticks and you

IMO this is one of those areas where its the custom rod builders expertise that makes all the difference. You have to consider the physical size and ability of your customer and want they need to get done and how, and then advise them of the length rod that will be best for them. There might be a lot of things where you have formulas to get down to the correct size of something but I do not think

To get eight builders in a state so big and sparsely populated is a pretty good turnout. Give yourself and all the guys a slap on the back!

No way I know of. The make up of epoxy makes it shiny no matter what you put in it, but...........there is a flattening agent sold by paint shops that might, just might, do what you want. But I have no idea what the proper additive ratio might be. Check with an automotive paint store.

Not sure if I would ever want to go lighter than 6 pound density but nice to know if I did. Do you know if this process holds true with any urethane foam product or just that specific one? I guess I could ask the manufacturer of the product I use. MIght be the best place to ask.

Robert Russell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why in the world can't epoxies be measured by > weight? This is often repeated around here and I > have no idea why. Uh, I would have to guess that its because the people who make the epoxies tell you to measure by volume and not by weight.

Phil, if you just use the manufacturers line ratings then you WILL be comparing 5 wt blanks to 8 wt blanks! Thats part of the problem because any rod can be labeled a 5 wt no matter how much power it has. Because such contests are about which rods the panel likes best and not which rod might actually BE the best, it really does not make much difference. Fun to do maybe but I have never based a

In my experience most of the blank or finished rod makers have spacing charts on their websites. They would have to work pretty good if this is what they use on their finished rods. I know Batson has some spacing charts. If you can find a chart for your specific blank make that would be even better. What brand blank is it?

Old school conventional wisdom said...USE ALL THE SAME TYPE AND SIZE GUIDES. Then we entered the age of using at least each guide size and multiples of the ones up near the tip. NOW we are entering the age where we find that a COMBINATION gets the overall best results. One larger near the butt and then the same size from there. But even then in some applications you can do better by actually usi

I have no idea what you are talking about. I do not use any gadgets and I will not buy any. Do not need to. If a relative comparison for efficiency is requested by a customer we already have a way to measure that and it does not require that we buy anything special to do it with.

I start with 12s on most of my freshwater casting rods and then skip to an 8 and then to 4s or 3s for all the rest. You really can go smaller on the running guides unless you have some sort of large, funky knots or something. Line does not really take up much room in a guide ring.

Oh agree with that 100%! What I cannot agree with is using or taking any measurement that requires me to buy special equipment or visit my local golf shop to have a measurement taken. Whats wrong with the CCS frequency measurement? If all you want to do is get a relative frequency number, that would seem to do it! And no one has to buy any special equipment to take the measurement. The CCF wi

MIke, does a higher resonant frequency really mean one rod has a higher stiffness to weight ratio than another with a lower resonant frequency number? Like you said they would have to be similar in all other areas to put the frequency difference on higher stiffness to weight ratio. You could have a slower action high modulus rod that shows a lower frequency number than a faster action lower modu

But they, we, do not have such scales. And how much resolution do you need? The old saying, Make It Simple, Make It Work is what the CCS is all about. It succeeds in that way and is why more use it now than if we had been tossed a bunch of engineering terms and told to buy a set of scales. Others have done that in the past. Where are their systems now?

You can do that but you end up giving up some real rod length if you make the fighting butt section on the blank itself. But that could be a good thing because for the best leverage you want a shorter rod anyway. I think it is a good idea and would do it that way. There was an interesting grip in the magazine a while back that had the additional forward fighting grip just built on as part of t

MOST custom rod builders are located here in America I would think. So using pennies makes sense at least to me. They are readily available and like George I would not have bothered buying a good scale to do any of this with. With pennies I did not have to. They present a good unit of measurement for Dr. Bill's system because all you have to do is count them. No weighing of anything is involved.

The SBSS, Sticks and Bones Spinning Seat, is about all I use these days anymore. It is the lightest and most comfortable I have found. It just works! You will have to make your own but this allows for the greatest degree of customization possible. I forget what issue of the mag it was featured in but it was within the last half dozen issues. Can probably find it on the Rodmakers back issue page.

Will, I AGREE but there are also people who will take advantage of you if you let them. Some will NOT spend a dime as long as they can get someone to do or tell them something for free.

Do not laugh............. I have panfish guys who want me to build them one rod for crickets, one rod for nightcrawlers, another rod for cheesebait, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. No kidding. Same thing the bass guys do I guess.

If the blank has any taper to it then yes. Or if it is pretty straight in the butt area you can just fill in and overlap a few threads like some here do.

People can only take advantage of you if you let them. He is being cheap. It is easier to get information from you than to buy a book or DVD or pay to attend a rod building class. If you are willing to spend your time walking him through it step by step, he will let you.

For Emory, you have stated that the Resonant Frequency tells you everything about rod action, material, weight distribution, etcetera. Okay, I will bite! I have a rod with a resonant frequency of 140. From that number please tell me how long it is, what type graphite it is made from and what the action is. Obviously I am making a point. I agree with Dr. Hanneman the resonant frequency numbers

I would hold back on thinking that major problems are being experienced. The internet boards are where people who have trouble go to find answers. The other 99 percent of people who are not having problems are not there, so unless you remember that it is easy to think that a half a dozen people represent some sort of major faction. You see five people who have problems with the Common Cents Syste

I have nothing against micros and have even used a few sets but I would have a hard time crediting them for a tournament win. I think that the same guy fishing the same lure in the same way on a rod that did not have micros would have still won. It is reaching a little to far to suggest that the reason for his win was due to his having micro guides on his rod. Please enlighten me...........how di

Do you mean water break free preparation for the blank surface? ALWAYS do it for component installation. But not for guide wrapping. You want to be able to remove the guide for repair at some point and if you do the WBF thing you almost cannot get the guide off. I know......I tried it!
