31. Re: rod maker
I was shocked to see the article comments from Joy Dunlap. Now theres a blast from the past. I had no idea he was still, as he used to put it, "at the bench". Joy was one of the original Clemens Rodcrafters. He would have to be in his mid 80s by now.

Not sure I would rely upon somebody elses opinion or experience on this one. You might ruin your paint job. There is only one sure fire way to find out.......try it! Put some of your paint on a scrap stick, let it dry, and then apply the Lumaseal over it. That was you will know for SURE what will happen.

If you will check other rods you have from years ago I think you will also find that enough pressure from a thumbnail will dent them to. Thats a lot of pressure. If the stuff in your mixing cup is OK then the stuff on your wraps is OK. I find it that finish is OK to be used in three or four days but can take up to a month to achieve its final hardness.

Or.......you could just send the broken blanks back to the manufactuter and let THEM determine why it broke. If it was defective they will replace it at no charge. You can talk and guess all you want but if it was me I would just SEND IT BACK and see what they say.

Only thing you did wrong was buy rod blanks off an @#$%& site. No way to know who you are buying from or if the blanks are really what they are described as being. Sure to be some good deals there but also sure to be some bad deals there. You got one of those last ones!

Well Tom, if you remember that Josh is deaf, how is a Rodmaker DVD going to help him? He will not be able to hear whats being said. Is it closed captioned now?

Bill, You will be amazed at all the tips and tricks on Tiger Wraps you will find in the sidebar articles within the original articles detailing this wrap. They appeared in Rodmaker but are now online on this forum's library section. If you check Bill Colby's sidebar on tips and tricks you will find all the info you could ever imagine on what to expect if you use nylon versus NCP, or CP or no CP,

And check this one out....
Also being debuted at ICAST is CastAway's Microwave Rod Line. The new micro guide spinning rods will change spinning rods forever using the Patented WaveSpin Microwave Guide System by Doug Hannon.

So there are still no measurements of any kind and they are only comparing it against an old fashioned cone of flight system. Enough said.

43. New 3M Resin
The press release in TTW about the new 3M resin for use in fishing rods says this-
"The $23 billion dollar company has developed what it calls 3M Matrix Resin that when combined with carbon at the prepeg level has the ability to make rods stronger, lighter and more durable.
At the time of going to press, TTW is aware of three companies that are utlising the new technology: St. Croix, G L

Thank you for that information Gena. It would still be nice to know which other guide set ups you compared against. What the line looks like going out and where it lands do not always go hand in hand. I do not doubt that the line looks very smooth going out through the Microwave guide. I saw the video someone posted earlier. But it still doesn't answer my question as to the increase in casting d

Great! I would trust that sort of real world test. The mag readers would probably like it to. Maybe you can get some of the better known builders in the area to take part.

Thanks guys. This is sort of what I thought. Please understand that I am a little skeptical of "deer in the headlight" fishermen who get handed something new and make all sorts of wild claims about how great something is so reports from something like ICAST do not really impress me. I wanted to compare against a known starting point for the sake of real comparison over a personal impres

OK, I will be more specific. If were to take the spinning rod shown on the cover of the current issue of Rodmaker mag, and remove the butt guide as shown and replace it with a Microwave guide, and then remove the next two guides and replace them with the same little ones you have for the choker and running guides, what is my casting difference going to be??

I do not think anyone here ever said it did not work..... What some have asked is if it works better or gives more distance than something like a good NGC set up. I know that Castaway is only comparing it against an old fashioned cone of flight system. I hope not many use that anymore.

CastAway has developed rods that will cast farther, faster and more accurately than any traditional spinning rods, thanks to the patent-pending MICROWAVEâ„¢ guide system.
Hmmmmmmm. What do they consider a "traditional" spinning rod? A rod with an old fashioned cone of flight system featuring large ring guides all the way out??

It sure does look SMOOTH! My question is what it really means for any actual increase in casting distance. I also noticed some of the video is "manually created" for effect. I guess its time to get out the rods and start doing some testing. Where can a person get one of these guides?

No doubt they had to bow from pressure from consumers. Companies have to do what it takes to be competitive with others in the same business. If their competitors are offering one year warranties and even some are offering lifetime warranties then a ninety day warranty is a death knell. Most fishermen believe a warranty is a guarantee against breakage. They rarely read the actual warranty and cou

I thought the article instructed you to let the rod sit and allow the excess epoxy to sag onto the bottom where you then remove it and then start the actual rotation?

53. Re: rod supports
I have to ask how long your wood lathe is? I would guess that with most bass rods you are talking one piece rods in the six to seven foot range. You must have some way of keeping the top half of the rods from flopping unless you want to damage them. Most wood lathes I know of are not that long. Should not be hard to extend the bed somehow or even buy a couple extensions if you plan to do many rod

I understand thanks. I guess a tour of your blank making facility during your open house in October is out of the question? Just kidding. I look forward to your new models.

That sounds reasonable. There are many companies that do that. It was the statement about the MHX blanks being manufactured BY Mudhole that made it sound like they were actually making the blanks themselves. Thats why I asked.
Forum: rodboard 13 years ago
Peter Sprague
A question was asked. I answered it to the best of my knowledge and even stated outright that I might be wrong and was offering info I had been given by other builders. Mudhole responded that they build their own blanks. This is contrary to what I have been told so I asked for a clarification. Not really sure why you chose to jump on me. Please allow me to get a clarification without being jumped

Manufactured BY Mudhole or manufactured FOR Mudhole? Are you saying that Mudhole owns their own blank making equipment?
Forum: rodboard 13 years ago
Peter Sprague
What I am about to say may be totally off. It is just what I have been told by builders who seem in the know. But do not quote me. I could be wrong.
The MHX blanks were intended to be clones or replacments for the popular Loomis IMX models that are no longer available. They are sold under both the Mudhole MHX logo and the American Tackle Classic Series logos.

I want to throw out something that I know was discussed here a few years back and some epoxy people were involved in that thread. The clearer the finish, the more UV reaches the thread which will light and fade it over time. The more the finish darkens or yellows, the more protection the thread itself receives.
So there is a two edged sword at work when you talk about clear finishes. Permaglos

It is pretty humid nationwide this time of year. I think it IS the brushing that does it. At least this time of the year. I have had no trouble waiting just thirty minutes between coats and the only bubbles I get are when I brush across the tunnels at the ends of the guide foot and thread wraps.
