A rod for the masses. But not for the highly selective upper end clients that most of us are after. I do not try to compete with $30 rods. No point in it. But the guys making the $30 rods cannot compete with what I build either. Two different markets.

I guess considering how many more rod builders the magazine reaches compared to the internet forums it makes more sense to put it in the magazine anyway. At some point it will trickle down to the internet forums. After all thats pretty much what has happened to all the other articles in the mag. The info trickles down from the mag, not up to it. If you will accept entries from others I will tr

123. Re: Why?
What other options? All thats left is the current manufacturer systems which are unique to each company and cannot be used from one to another. Thats the only set of systems that any widespread data exists for and its unique to each manufacturer. If there are any other systems, they would have to get exposure in something like Rodmaker for the rod building masses to ever take notice of them. H

I think the ones that advertise "Hialoy" are using the same material as the Alconite rings are made from. Might be better to ask directly though.

Oh, forgot to ask..........does he have the CCF frequency numbers listed? I am quickly learning how valuable THAT information really is.

Excellent! Even a page per issue would be helpful. North Fork is adding the data for their blanks as they produce them so that alone would provide a good many models to include. I would like to see Batson get on board. Hopefully Bills database already has a bunch of the Batson stuff included.

127. Re: Why?
There are not that many that have trouble with it. And when you do see somebody taking exception to it it is always the same three or four guys. I would not worry about it. My guess is that a lack of submissions is due to a several things. Most of us just do not think about doing it or do not have the time. I have measured several rods this month alone and just never really thought about sitti

Somebody posted last week about getting a bunch of glass rods from a Salvation Army or Goodwill store for a buck apiece.

Basically you just set the guide up and bind it down with some rubber bands while a tiny spot of epoxy dries the guide in place. Then you coat with thickened Permagloss until you have the whole foot encapsulated. This is just a basic overview and I would agree that having the back issue is your best bet. Its a lot to cover in a message board post when the magazine article has photos and all th

Have not used them, but saw them and shook them at the Expo a couple weeks ago. Felt good and the price was very reasonable.

Congratulations. I like and use micros on many of my rods but we have to be careful putting the reason for a win on the fact that these guys were using carbon fiber handles and micro guides. Because.......................dozens and dozens of other guys are fishing and winning with rods fitted with regular cork and EVA grips and standard large issue guides. They could just as easily say that the r

Bobby, that only works if you have both the blanks. What if you have neither?

Yes I have some experience with E Bay. Stay away. Too much counterfit and purposely mislabeled stuff sold there. Probably some good stuff in the mix but too many shysters and hucksters there pawning off seconds and counterfits as the real deal. Look at the post above about the guy who bought the dryer unit off that same @#$%& site. Now he knows something about E Bay to.

Paul I agree with you. In time the fly fishermen caught on and have learned a bit of a lesson in the last few years. But the people who built that industry with their clever marketing have now moved on to the bass market and inflated the price of bass rods and reels to an extent as great or more than they ever did in the fly fishing end of things. Somebody is always willing to give you their mone

Good reels. But can only be reversed for RH retrieve with a special tool But Johnny said he had those in stock and could send one out if you bought a reel and needed to reverse it.

Uhhh.....I do not think so. Only the people from Trondak make their own epoxy products. I think others are just rebottling, reselling products they get from an epoxy manufacturer. Scott may know its okay but I do not think he is the actual manufacturer.

Comparable? NO! Not even close! There is nothing else on the scale or quality of the Expo and thats a fact! There is a reason that people in your neck of the woods are willing to travel here to the East Coast each year for the Expo. There is nothing else like it! But, this does not mean you cannot find or have a good time at another smaller rod building event. I think that Lamiglass is having

It does make you wonder about the people who have never attended an Expo and like to make out as if it was.........Just Another Rod Building Show. There is really nothing else like this. So much going on and it all runs so smoothly. The education, the history, the amount of product to see and touch. And all for a lousy ten bucks. If there is a better value in all of custom rod building I would de

Tom, unless you get bought out or sign a no compete clause with another show promoter there is no way anyone else can do a major rod building event. At this point the industry and the builders know that if they can only do one show, yours is the one to do. In fact I think they have known that for some time. You always produce what you promise and you do things in a big way.

There was a builder at the Expo that had a unique seat. Fuji type graphite parts bonded on a titanium barrell. Really sharp. Should be light and strong and we know how those parts hold a seat so securely! Might be worth your while to look him up. Sammy Mickel from Mickel's Custom Rods. No idea if he has a website but he has posted here in the past. I looked the seats over pretty good and thought

Or find broken Harnell rods and try to salvage the grips. Keep your eye on those fly markets and tackle swaps.

Spencer and Tom bring up points that could save you some trouble. Just make sure your spinning reel will fit the hoods on the fly seat and that the seat is not so small in diameter that your hand will cramp during a long days fishing. If those two areas work out you will be okay, but do check just to make sure.

There are ONLY three options possible here.... 1- Herb can change his application technique to what the manufacturer recommends. 2- Herb can go back to an epoxy that is better for his current application method. 3- Silvia can reformulate Diamond II to better suit what Herb is doing with it. I think the last one is out of the question but that still leaves Herb with two really good opt

The maker of the product says not to put it in the freezer but you do it anyway and obviously intend to continue doing it. So you really cannot complain or blame the finish for anything that might go wrong. Rather than "try it" I would have to figure out what to do with all that time. I guess I must be missing something. You put it on and move to the next guide and in a matter of min

Hmmm.....I have had nothing but positive experiences with the Diamond II product. I feel like it handles a lot like Flex Coat but is just a wee bit clearer or brighter. I guess if all the epoxies behaved the same way then there would be no market for all these different products. I believe you have to find the epoxy that works best with YOUR application technique and then stick with that one.
