i do remeber about i post a spinning guide size and place few week ago or a month ago, i wonder is the casting size and placement part of different plans than spinning like as it start with 16 or 12 and go to tip, is the reason casting being part of cone before put smallest guides 6 all way to tip ??
when i take a look at my shimano curical 7' casting rod and count the guides and it has 9 guides and a tip and start with 12, and it part of cone not allw ay to tip just about start wtih 12, 10, 8,8,7,7,6,6,6 then tip is that most casting guides doing that ?? and what is your placement on casting with guides ? would like to know and curious of ur opioions Josh Re: spinning and casting placement

Josh, the cone of flight principal does not apply to casting rods. It is used to describe the shape of the line as it comes off of a spinning reel and passes thru continually smaller guides as it approaches the tip. A casting rod needs maybe 2, or 3 at the most larger guides before all the same size guides going on to the tip. A 12, then an 8, then all 6 single foot guides and a 6 tip would be an example. The final small guide size would be determined by the size of a leader knot used as mentioned before countless times in this forum. I think a book, or several books would be a very wise investment, not only for the descriptions of how to do different things, but for the illustrations, also. Re: spinning and casting placement

Josh,
The advice that Jim Gamble gave you above would be the best money you'll ever spend on rod building. Equally good would be one of the Flex Coat books on rod building. You are spending a great deal of time wondering about all sorts of things and having to rely upon forum users for even the most trivial information when you could have it all in your hands for easy reference in less than a week. Please do yourself a huge favor and invest in a rod building book of some sort. Then you'll be able to do more without having to spend so much time waiting for answers on this or any other forum. .............. Re: spinning and casting placement

Well Tom, if you remember that Josh is deaf, how is a Rodmaker DVD going to help him? He will not be able to hear whats being said. Is it closed captioned now? Re: spinning and casting placement

Unless it has been changed, the RodMaker DVD series is a compliation of articles, including photos and illustrations, not conversations. It will do just fine IMO. Re: spinning and casting placement

Peter,
The item in question isn't a DVD - it's a CD created from numerous articles on all aspects of guide number, sizing and placement. Some of them are from RodMaker while others have never appeared anywhere previously. There is no need for any sort of closed captioning. If Josh can read, and he obviously can, then he'll find it a great deal of help. ............. Re: spinning and casting placement
