I am planning to do a wrap in metallic yellow, orange, and red. I have red left over from the Gudebrod era, but no yellow or orange. It's hard to determine true look from the ProWrap sites on-line, so I'm wondering if anyone out there can recommend ProWrap metallic colors that will give me a hardcore yellow, but more importantly, a nice orange to serve as an intermediate between the yellow and

I'd like to use the black/white tiger thread to wrap a striper rod -- charcoal blank, titan guides -- to keep with an overall striper theme. I noticed that MudHole recommends using color preserver with this thread. I don't like using color preserver, so my question is -- Has anyone used this thread without CP and if so, how much does the white portion of the thread lose its "whiteness"

As per my MudHole catalog, it looks like the "old" NIA and NIC series titanium guides from American Tackle have been replaced lock, stock, and barrel by "ring lock" versions. I have used the NIRLC 6's, and they seem to have a much lower profile than the old NIC 6's, but I have no experience with any of the larger size ring locks in either the casting or spinning versions. So

This blank has a spec lure weight of 3/8 - 1 1/2. Can anyone out there tell me what its real "sweet spot" is, and also what is the range of lure weights that it can throw comfortably and effectively? Thanks.

Thank you everyone for your help. I asked my wife if she had a "dash" or a "pinch" measurer for when she cooks -- which isn't very often -- and I struck out on both counts. So it's back to the by-guess-and-by-gosh way of doing things, I suppose.

Anyone have a suggestion as to how much glitter to add to thread finishing epoxy -- proportions or whatever? Or does everyone just add a "pinch"? Thanks.

I know many of the rodbuilders on this site hold little truck with Cabela's blanks, but for those who may use them, I'd like some help. Have any of you built on the FishEagle II Steelhead blanks, specifically the 9-foot GST906 (1/2-2 oz) and the GST905 (1/2-1 1/2 oz) models? Which of these will feel better throwing 1 oz metal and what do they handle well a lttle above or below 1 oz? Also, rela

A buddy asked me to build out this blank for him. He would like to use it for stripers in the surf -- where we fish (Lavallette, NJ) we typically get stripers in the upper 20 to lower 30" range. Am wondering what it's capable of? What weight lure does it throw best, and will it handle these fish OK? Thanks.

I'm looking for a 1-piece 9-foot blank for throwing a 1-oz spoon in the surf. Will throw 3/4 oz at times, but nothing over 1 oz. Has anyone built the American Tackle SW1085, and will it fill this bill? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Steve, I use the same basic setup using titans -- the only difference is I put a high-frame 6 between the high-frame 10 and the #6 fly guides. Excellent line control.

I second Duane's comment -- it doesn't take hours of threadwork to make a rod pretty. In my opinion, the prime contributor to "pretty" is color selection -- at least that's what folks notice first when you're fishing on the beach, for instance. Whether the blank is black or colored, chosing primary wrapping thread and trim color(s) that set the blank off -- colors can be subtle or bli

All, Following questions all in context of building 9' to 10' plugging rods for throwing 1 to 4 oz. Guides -- I'm a fan of AmTak titanium guides and am wondering about the various double-foot size 6's available. Is there a difference in ring height between the NIV-6 and NIC-6 guides, and which, if either, would anyone recommend for running guides? With the lines and terminal tackle I us

Have a buddy who wants to build a rod for a cousin -- cousin fishes inshore ( Charleston area South Carolina) mostly for reds and my buddy knows he really likes his Shimano Crucial 7', but doesn't know if it's a medium/fast, or medium-heavy/fast. Regardless, does anyone know where Shimano gets their blanks, and/or what might be the closest blank to theirs in quality, construction, feel, etc?

Has anyone built on this this blank? What for and how do you like it? I'm considering it for a light-to-medium duty plugging rod for the surf. It's rated at 1-4 ounces -- where is it's sweet spot? Its butt diameter, and especially tip size, seem a little small for what it's supposed to throw -- any concerns? Thanks.

All, Would like to build a 10-ft plugging rod with a lure weight sweet spot of about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 oz for throwing metal and hard plastic/wood to stripers in the NJ surf and reds, spanish, and blues in NC. Considering the lamiglas SSU series but they're lots of $$. Any alternatives? What about some of the 10'6" steelhead blanks that top out at 1 1/2 oz -- if I take 6" off the t

I'm pretty sure there are some true chemists following this board based on the responses to questions I've seen. I wonder if one of them would take the time to please give me a brief description of the chemical process/reaction that turns a liquid resin and hardener into a solid material, either the epoxy we use to "glue" things together, or that we use to coat our threadwork. I don

Thanks all for the replies. It seems I'm not the only one who's concerned. Specifically related to the last reply from Steve Gardner, does building a blank to attain maimum casting distance impact performance? If so, can you tell me how? I'm not doubting you, however I'm altogether relatively new at rodbuilding compared to many of the contributors to this forum and I want to hear others' th

While not able to help with a casting distance example, I would like to add some related discussion and see where it goes. My concern is with handle length related to blank length and lure weight. When Tom talks about a "sweet spot" for a blank, my engineering background suggests that for any built being blank, handle length AND lure weight are part of the equation determining sweet s

Would like to give a sabiki rod to a fishing buddy of mine in Florida in return for him including me on an annual speckled trout/redfish trip on his boat. I'd prefer to build the rod rather than simply buy one. I think I recall MudHole offering these blanks some time ago, but couldn't find them now. Anyone know who might have such blanks and components? I looked on the web and nothing obvious

Am wondering about this also related to a blank I just bought and am trying to decide how to build it out. The blank is perhaps a little different type than Matt's, but the question remains the same. I picked up a Rainshadow SW1087 for throwing metal and plugs (1 1/2 to 2 oz) to stripers in the NJ surf. I have an 8 1/2' rod that I built previously with a handle length of about 15" that I

Great place to put a fish decal if you're building fish-specific rods. A little bit of simple wrapping in coordinated colors by both corks then makes a nice "frame" for the decal.

Thanks for the help, fellas. Glad to hear I was going in the right direction. But I didn't realize that the threads on the fighting butt stem went right through the plug and there was a chance of bunging things up by letting epoxy get onto the threads of the plug -- so thanks for this info and ways around it. Additionally though, it struck me when thinking about the construction that I could a

I'm beginning to build my first saltwater fly rod, but am at my home away from home with no directions or similar resources. I have a PacBay RS8A machined aluminum reel seat and an AmTak F2M fighting butt with a plug that fits nicely into the end of the reel seat. However, I'm at a loss as to how to get these pieces together when the reel seat is installed over the blank? The smaller diameter

All, I have only built spinning and surf rods to date. I have a 9' 8-weight fly rod blank I'd like to build out for surf and inshore fishing for blues, reds, and spanish, and have a couple questions I hope someone can help with. 1) In looking through the various catalogs, I notice that there seem to be no graphite fly reel seats. Is this true? If so, can someone recommend a decent alumi

All, Am planning to build my first casting rod, 7' long, 8-12# line, fast action, light power, for inshore conditions. Reel is undecided as of yet. Will use AmTak Titan NIC's or NIRLC's, with a revolver style guide placement. Can anyone give me a recommendation as to guide sizes to use from butt to tip? Also, is there a problem using fly guides, that is Titan NIF's, near the tip? Addi

Been a while since I've been on the board -- too much to do after retiring about a year ago! Have a blank of unknown origin. It's labeled as "All Star BGSW967", but the specs I've been able find for that blank on the web don't exactly fit what I'm holding. The blank I have is one piece, tip diameter of about 6 (64ths) and butt OD of about 0.625". What I've been able to find
