Contracts from Mud Hole, American Tackle and St. Croix were in the morning's mail. The exhibitor's list is nearly complete. Last Wednesday I met with staff at the Showplace to go over the new floor plan. We'll be able to get 75 booths on the exhibit hall floor without reducing aisle space or changing the seminar room locations. Even a full 7 months out, the ICRBE is already larger than anyt

I have a graphite fly rod blank that was painted and then finsihed into a completed rod. I've been asked to remove the current painted finish and wraps and to re-wrap the rod with the blank's original matt grey finish. I know there are a number of solvents out there that can remove the paint but I'm concerned that too strong a solvent or one left on too long will damage the blank. It's already a

One reason the event runs so smoothly is because we get to work on everything early. June is a busy month around here as we prepare the seminars and get the floor plan ready. We’re still a long ways out, but here’s what you can look forward to in February: Following is a preliminary list of the seminars and demonstrations to be presented at the upcoming International Custom Rod Building E

Fellow Rod Carfters, I wish to build an ultra light flick stick for my young daughter. I like the idea of the Ugly Stik "Pink" series and wanted to put my own touch on that idea. Does anyone know if there is a manufacturer of pink blanks or, who supplies Ugly Stik blanks? Cheers Chris

I've read many threads on this topic before trying to paint my first blank. I went to the store and bought automotive spray paint and clear coat. It has dried for about a week, but when I apply permagloss the paint smears and looks terrible. What is the best way to do this? Thanks, Brant

Aloha. Is using an airbrush to paint large, long, surf blanks a feesable way to do the job? Or will buying a auto paint set-up (compresser, spray gun, etc.) be that much better? Mahalo for your responses.

I don't know where this went so I will try again. I just stripped an old boat rod blank and was wondering what type of finish or paint I should use to cover up the white blank. Also how to apply it so it looks more prfessional with no streaks. Are there a variety of colors? Finally, do I need to put some sort of clear protective finish on top of it? Thanks for your help. Does anyone use anything like car wax or liquid glass to polish and or protect the rods that they build? I was putting liquid glass on the head of my driver to protect the paint from the inevitable sky balls that I will hit with it and it dawned on me that it might work to protect my rods as well. Another reason that I was wondering, beyond protection, is that it puts an incredible shine on the

Hi, I promised my neice that I would make her a pink fishing rod for her 4th birthday (this July). I am having a difficult time finding a pink blank in the size I want. Ideally, it will be small, 4'6" or 5' with light power . We will probably just fish for stocked trout or very small bass. The only blank I can find is a 7-foot 1st run on mudhole (SPSWB7L). Can I simply cut this t

I stopped by one of the local "Big Box" sporting goods store this afternoon and was struck by the number of different colors rods are available in. Green, Blue, Red, Mohogany etc... These are not painted blanks, the color is in the blank. I would like to use similar blanks but I can not find them anywhere. Why not?

As a first project to practice wrapping guides I have removed the guides from an 40+ year old 6.5' solid fiberglass spinning rod. The rod has seen a lot of wear/tear with the original blue finish looking pretty sorry on the tip section and the wraps were failing but the reel seat and cork grips are in good shape. Thanks to the great posts on this board I've been searching through my plan is to

I am really sick as i have said in other threads of the limited colors or blanks. I was wondering if anyone has painted a blank with any success. I know that there is some talk among a sponser or two of coming up with a paint that will work on blanks but so far all i have seen is talk. I also know there is one or two manufacturers who for a fee will paint a blank they sell. Can a pigment be mixe

I appreciate all of the responses I have been getting on my last post. I have another question that I hope someone has some ideas for.... I am looking for a type of stain that will penetrate the suface of a raw graphite rod blank. I like the polished blank look but thought adding a color tint to the graphite would give some additional appeal. Has anyone tried this or know of any product tha

How many blanks are made in Black? Can someone come up with a new product (off the shelf) that can utilise cover coats such as Permagloss and others so we can easily and quickly change the colours of blanks. The interest and posts generated by this subject should send a clear message to a budding entrepreneur to come up with a commercial product to colour change a blank R

I see various posts about painting blanks. Sure like some of the results. However, do not the paint add weight and thus slowing down the blank and reducing it's 'crispness' (i.e. recovery rate, oscillation rate etc.)? I have blanks that are 'bare' sanded which is how I always choose if given a choice. however, having some unique paint scheme would be nice and am wondering about pai

I just painted my first blank.....used dupli color metallic autmotive paint... My question is do I need a clear coat on top of this finish....the paint doesn't require this for its normal use on an automobile. The finish appears very hard and looks great.....just wondering if anyone has used this as a final finish and how does it hold up

Gentlemen - I am seeking insight on the best paint and clear coat to use when painting a rod blank. My other hobby is custom airbrushing and painting. However, I have never applied this to rodbuilding. I generally use urethene based automotive paint (ie. House of Color, PPG, Dupont, ect.), or water based automotive paint (Auto Air), when airbrushing. My first question is whether anyone has

Hey there! My "set up" is on its way! Hubby ordered it for me as my Mother's Day Present! My question is this: Did any of you practice wrapping on dowel rods before you actually practiced wrapping on a rod? Or did you immediately practice on a fishing rod? Was wondering if it would help me or not? Any input would be appreciated! You guys are ALWAYS so helpful! :) Thanks!

I am building some kids' rods this summer and was interested in painting end of the blanks a bright color, or even glow-in-the-dark, to help the kids spot nibbles (and they'll think it's cool!). Can I use the standard hi-vis and glowing paints carried by Home Depot and then just cover with a coat or two of Permagloss? Will the paint tend to crack in an area that sees as much flex as the tip of
