Since I will soon have the materials to put all of my research to use I just need the answers to a few problems that I cannot figure out. For one thing, how do I figure out what size winding check i will need. Is there a specific height on the blank that I can measure the diameter at? or do I have to put the whole handle together first and then measure and then send for the winding check? I h

How do you all paint epoxy onto the ferrules of a rod that you are turning with all sections assembled? I have been using painters tape but the fit is very very tight, sometimes the sections slip, and I am concerned about cranking down on the "female section". Obviously, I do not want to get epoxy on the "male sections". If not blue painters tape, what do y'all use?

I was wondering if there is anyone in the rod building business that will recoat or refinish graphite fly rod blanks. I have two blanks that I would like to change the colors of. I'm somewhat familiar with the process, but I do not have the means to do it myself. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Bill H.

Hi Guys - got a question - I used to purchase a black pigment from Clemens business in Allentown Pa years ago and have not been able to find anything near as good. I have heard of some of you using Testor's paints and such - but this stuff was like a thinned out or thick paint that you put on with a rag, much like shoe polish and it just plain worked like paint. It was i believe urethane based

hey guys, well my dad has just got back into building and he just purchased the P844 IMX popping blank to roll up into a snapper stick for over here in aus. What he wants to do is paint the blank (probably a greeny color) but he is pretty "nah shell be right mate" in his building techinques and not as @#$%& bent on perfection as i am. Now his plan that he just told me was to pa

The availability of rod building kits and components has made the art of building a fishing rod very elementary. In fact, what I thought was impossible 5 years ago, is now possible even for newbies. So, apart from classic bamboo fly rods, can the rest be recognised as a craft. Anthony Lee

I know I have seen some on the lighter side, but I have a customer requesting a build on a pink blank for his wife. Looking for something in the 9' 1-3 oz. rating range for some light surf fishing. Thanks, Mark

Another blank painting/finishing question. Just to be clear…I’m talking about finishing a whole “self” painted blank off, not just wraps. Mr. Kirkman has described how to use cheesecloth and wipe a rod down with Permagloss. I have never used Permagloss and was wondering if it does give the factory (can not dig my fingernails into) type finish? Not questioning you Mr. Kirkman. Reason I as

Are you guys scuffing this before you apply permagloss? Is it safe to wet sand it a little to basically use it as a primer then add more coats?

I'm in the process of refurbishing a fiberglass stick. It's a 6 1/2' Cabelas eGlass baitcasting rod that had brown paint on it. I've turned walnut fore and butt grips and I'm planning on mounting the guides in the spiral fashion. I'm going to try my hand at weaving just above the fore grip. I received Doc Ski's videos and James Upton's great weaving book so I'm now very inspired. This one wi

This post is in reference to one of the answers to the caution w/ extreme camo blanks post. The answer was to use max seal over painted rod blanks. I've never heard of this product before so, I was hoping to get some info on this product. Thanks to John Martines I now know it's a hybrid water based poly but, that's all. So, anymore info would be greatly appreciated because I can't fine any info o

Not liking color preserver, I have had the thought of painting the area under the wraps on dark blanks. As you know, most thread wraps tend to disappear on dark blanks. I tried a metalic silver paint under royal blue wraps on a practice blank and it turned out very nice. Has anyone ever tried this and how did it turn out?

I know that Mud Hole carries colored rod blanks but they do not carry an ultralight blank. Does anybody carry a purple ultralight blank? If not, would cutting part of the butt off a light action rod make it lighter??? I am hoping to find a 5'6" ultralight rod. Thanks, Eric

Just had 25 blanks painted Univerisity of Texas Orange for a customer by a highly experienced automotive painter. Two coats of orange followed by one coat of clear containing uV and flex agents added 2.4 gms to the blank. This weight increase equals approximately 5% weight increase. The increase was measured on a Satoris Digital scale.

I'd like to hear a few tips and tricks when it comes to dealing with pastel type colors and getting nice even bright wraps. Colors like bright yellow, light blues give me a fit. What do you guys do to keep them clean, bright, and pretty before or after the wrap? I've used NCP threads and they are even worse than using plain nylon. No CP ever used here guys. DR

We have been selling the Tough Sticks for many years with a Clear Blue Solid Glass tip and the rest of the blank is Gloss Black. I have been back and forth with so many customers that say make them all black or clear but not blue. I have several customers that like the blue because of the Black and Blue Ring guides we have but all in all folks are asking for a diffrent color. So I ask any of you

I know this has been asked many times before, but what is the best way to paint a blank? I did read “Refinishing Rod Blanks” by Ralph O’Quinn in the library. I also did a search and found some things about colored blanks (from the factory) and tinting finishes. But couldn’t find much on actually painting the blank. Maybe I am not using it right. Here is my plan to help explain. I have

Wondering how you guys do it. I was thinking about mixing some permagloss with the pigment from the bottom of some testors. I am ideally looking for a finish with just a hint of color that is glossy. Any input is greatly appreciated

Everything for the 2008 ICRBE is pretty much set as of this afternoon. The exhibitors, seminars and demos, etc., etc. Here is the final list, which is also available on the event website. I would recommend that anyone wishing to stay directly across the street from the event facility make that call to the Radisson in the next week or so. They will be sold out in the next few weeks. im goin into my second year or so of rod wrapping. still just repairing and rewrapping old rods that I sand down, repaint, and custom wrap. seems no matter what paint i use, the blanks look like they were repainted. my question is, what do ya'll use to give it that glossy brand new look? flexcoat finish the whole rod then put the guides and wraps on?

My first post. I have two surf rods one is 9' theother is10'. They are old, belonged to my wife's father and he's been gone 22 years. I would like to restore them for my wife she always fished with him. The blanks are gold colored and faded. Any way of brightening them up without painting. I'll save other questions for later.

hello all, i am obviously new to the boards, and new to rod building. i've been spending the last two weeks reading and reading old posts, reading rodmaker magazine, and watching dvds. so, here's my first question for the pros. i'm interested in building rods with colored blanks. now from doing the research it seems that tinting permagloss (or diamondite, etc) is much prefered over pai

Back a few months ago I built up one of Mudhole's pink E-Glass rods (15-25) for a gag. The guys wife has become very attached to the rod - she is always wearing pink head to toe. Anyhow, when I built the rod I noticed a curly q in the end and that the blank was out of round. Well, a top shot was being put on the rod over the weekend for a upcoming live bait trip and the tip snapped off

Forgive me for being such a terrible photographer but I did manage to upload some photos of a Spin cast rod built on one of Mud Hole's purple blank. They are in "Grips handles and seats'' and in "Guide wraps". Gives you an idea about what shade of purple the blanks are.

Booth contracts from Lamar Fishing Products, REC and Acid Rod were in the morning's weekend mail. This brings to 39 the number of manufacturers, exhibitors and vendors who will be attending and displaying at the ICRBE in February. That list will grow a bit more over the next few weeks as we approach the deadline. Over 60 booths have now been sold. I have been doing a little work on the event

Booth contracts from @#$%& and American Tackle were in the mail this morning. That brings the number of exhibitors to 37 as of today, June 29th. Exactly 52 booths have now been sold. I suspect the remaining 23 booths will be gone by mid-July. Advance tickets are selling briskly, but I would remind everyone that we won't run out and the ticket lines last year moved smoothly and swiftly. Bec
