Thanks. The plum blanks were being sold on close-out last month. I picked up the 1338 for C$118. I'll probably build it for next year's trip to northern BC.

I'm pretty sure the XF864-4 is not heavier than the XF865-4. If you are looking at the specs there may be an error - I found a similar error on a Batson Steelhead Blank from the catalog.

Just checked - I have an MHx ST1022-2, 4-8lb spinning blank with ERN: 10.4 and AA:75. The ST10281 (9 footer) might just work for you.

Not even close. The MHx blanks have a significantly different taper. Did you try Dan to see if the FT is still available? info@dancraftent.com You could try a saltwater blank but I'm not sure it will be even close. Your best bet might be a fast action spinning blank. My 4wt FT (ERN: 7.2, AA: 75) does

I built a float rod on a Batson 11'6" Spey blank and found that Batson's recommended guide spacing worked pretty well prior to static testing.

His website looks to be a very rough work in progress. I would suggest calling him but there's no phone number. I would be surprised if he stopped selling FT blanks (if he is still in business).

Welcome to the 1970's. A non-searchable, non-indexed catalog is extremely non-user friendly. That and it doesn't even contain all their blanks (at least that I can find). It's not the worst manufacturer website I have ever seen but it's running a very close second. It is unfortunate because I actually want to buy their stuff but can't get the information I want.

I used a Batson RX6 11'6" 6/7wt spey blank to build a float rod (levelwind). I wanted a rod that could break down for pack trips and that was a bit longer than the typical 10'6" west coast float rod for larger rivers. The rod performs flawlessly fighting salmon upwards of 20lbs in moving water - as expected it flexes deep into the butt, but I found the slower action requires a lot more

Why would you use a split grip on a long centerpin rod? They always balance terribly tip heavy and are meant to be fished in a tip up configuration. Lots of guys add weight to the butt end to ease wrist fatigue.

I build a float rod for steelhead using a Batson RX6 6/7wt 11'6" 4pc Spey blank. It was my primary rod for steelhead for several years, and I battled many salmon over 20lbs. ERN = 10.16 so the equivalent of a strong 9wt single handed fly rod. AA = 68. I cast 3/4 to 1 oz of weight with no issues. Mine is wrapped for a levelwind reel and the only aspect I don't like is that it is much, much s

DanCraft FT 4wt AA=76 Sage TCX AA=75 Loomis HLS, PacBay Quickline AA=72 Sage One, Z-Axis, XP, Mudhole MHX AA=70 Many of these are also over-powered for their rating. DanCraft FT 4wt has an ERN of 7.2, for example. I have this rod and find it terrible to cast. It might make a good gear rod, though.

Weird. I wonder why the Forhan Revolver and Slow Spiral recommend 0 to -10 degrees offset to the first guide (i.e. away from the direction of spiral) if it would cause stacking.

I agree with Phil. Having to download a large PDF file just to look for a specific component is not acceptable. They need to fix it.

Use CCS to measure your existing rods and you should be able to find something that is at least close (Mudhole MHx, PacBay Quickline would be my starting points since they list CCS values). It is more challenging to achieve the same weight since the Winston blanks are very light. Might need to consider one of the newer "nano-resin" blanks, which of course cost a lot more and may not be

13.5" rear grip for the Mudhole 8'6" salmon spinning rod I built last year. It needs to be short enough to switch from right to left while applying pressure to a large fish without catching on your jacket, and long enough to give you leverage for distance casts and fighting large fish.

Mudhole has red, purple and green framed guides but no blue that I could see. PacBay and others have PVD coated Blue Titanium Nitride rings, but I haven't seen a blue framed guide for sale.

It depends what you are trying to do. A longer rod will allow you to cast a bit further and will be able to absorb more shocks (fish running towards or away, head shakes, etc). I can cast 150 feet all day with a 1/2oz spoon with the 8'6" rod. Previously I used a 7' rod so 8'6" was a big upgrade. I don't see a need to go longer. The "4" power rod will be significantly more p

I accidentally built an ST1022-MHX last year - I ordered the ST1023 but didn't notice I received the wrong blank until it was already on the turner. I built it for chucking up to 1/2oz spoons to Pinks and Coho in slower moving water, and although I found it it too light for salmon over 10 lbs, it is really nice for the smaller varieties. Note it has an ERN of 10.4 and AA of 75. I used AmTak Aer

I recently stripped the size 8 single foot wire guides from my 8wt and replaced with double footed snakes because they significantly impacted performance using loop to loop connections. Works a lot better now even though both guides have the same diameter profile when looking down the rod.
