Pretty hard to tie a nail knot with only a single thread turn. If you can't trap the tag ends of your trim band under the main wrap your only real option is CA.

Don't use any solvents and don't scrape the blank with a tool. Cut the wraps on top of the guide foot, remove the guide and grab the thread.
Unravel the thread to remove most of the epoxy and use your fingernail with a small amount of heat to remove the rest.
You will remove some of the finish but that should be entirely covered from the new wrap.

124. Re: 4wt Switch
I haven't built a switch rod out of it, but my single hander MHx 4wt 10' has an ERN of 5.4, AA of 70, if that helps.

Is it just me or is this starting to feel like spam?
I"m all for sponsors presenting new technology, providing updated results, new use cases, special offers, etc but all I'm seeing is hype for rod builders to check out the marketing presentation.
Here are some post titles from the last month: I know if they were coming to my inbox they would get filtered into the junk folder.

What a great idea - no scratches, no tape residue to remove. I will give o-rings a try.

Or even better, spiral wrap it.

128. Re: sturgeon rod
You definitely need a sensitive tip regardless of whether fishing from a boat or from shore.
In B.C. we use single piece 8 foot rods for sturgeon, mostly from a boat since shore access is limited.
Most sturgeon casting rods do not have triggers, primarily because they get caught in the rod holders.
For this use I would definitely go with a simple spiral with double footed SiC guides since thes

I haven't used them but Mudhole lists a size 1 CRB NanoMicro guide with an ID of 1.35mm, which is much smaller than a #3 insert gu

Fair enough. Interestingly your opinion is worth exactly the same as mine in this poll.
Enjoy your FT.

Let's agree to disagree then.
I would go so far to say that this may be the worst example of a 4wt fly rod - it is certainly the worst I have ever casted.
You are most certainly a better caster than I, and although I can readily aerialize 75 feet of 4wt WF line using several different fly rods (ERN < 5.2), I find that I cannot load the FT in order to even get this much line out without signi

Thanks Bill. I tried it with a 6 wt and it still feels like a 2x4 while casting. I only use it as a trolling rod now - nice sensitive tip and lots of backbone for hooksets with lots of heavy sink line out. .

The FT is pretty unique. I have a 9' 4wt tied up as a fly rod and hate it for the ridiculously fast action. ERN: 7-8, AA: 75-80
I imagine it would make a much better spinning rod, though a fairly expensive one.
Sage TCX/TCR are very fast action but are even more expensive.

This is the one?
I would not expect a blank with AA:75 to be described as "Medium action".
I am interested in your guide placement for future reference.
Thanks,
Rick

Very few Spey/Switch rods are measured or advertised using CCS so I don't know of any relative references you could use to compare.
That blank sounds quite interesting though - I think it would make an excellent steelhead float rod.
I measured the Batson RX6 spey 11'6" 6/7wt blank at ERN: 10.2, AA: 68 which is a bit slow for my tastes.
Do you mind sharing which blank it is?

My salmon/steelhead casting rod is built on a Batson 11'6" 6/7wt spey blank.
I used PacBay BDPLSG SiC double foot guides: 12, 10, 8 @ 96", 83.5", 72.5" from the tip.
The spiral pattern is similar to the Forhan Revolver style with stripper at -5 degrees, second guide at 60 degrees, and third at 120 degrees and the spiral revolves away from the reel handle.
The first single f

I used single foot 8's for runners on my spiral wrapped salmon rod and find that they pass bobber stops really well even in icy conditions.

140. Re: 10' ,4 wt
I built on the Mudhole MHx 4wt 10' blank last summer and it is very nice. ERN=5.2, AA=70. I tried it with the 4wt Rio indicator and found it was underloaded. Last week I used it with the same line in 5wt and it casted beautifully from a v-boat.
I'm guessing that it will be slightly heavier than the Sage One due to the nano resin.

Rainshadow RX6:
2pc, 9', 5wt = 1.6oz
4pc, 9' 5wt = 1.75oz (+9%)
Mudhole MHx
2pc, 9', 5wt = 1.3oz
4pc, 9' 5wt = 1.55oz (+20%)

A multi-piece rod will be heavier than a single piece rod, but I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantage.

144. Re: Common cents ?
Something sounds wrong there. Most medium action rods I have measured are in the ERN=10 to 14 range.
Are you deflecting by 1/3 or deflecting to 1/3 of the length?

145. Re: not again!
I always fish barbless hooks so a quick hookset is vital.
I use the following methods:
Fly rod cast and strip
Fly rod cast, mend and swing
Spinning rod cast and retrieve (spoons, spinners)
Float rod cast, mend and drift
I never have slack line between tip-top and terminal tackle or tip-top to spool (or hand in the case of a fly rod). so "always" may be a stretch.

The blank is very light and my build was very light with size 1 single foot running guides.
The feel is significantly different than the 9' due to the extra length but once I slowed down my casting stroke it casted really well.
ERN:5.2 AA:70 for the 4wt. I used a 4wt Rio Indicator line and had no problem loading the rod. 70 foot casts were quite effortless (my normal casting distance on stil

I also only build the 4pc rods. IMO the convenience of the shorter package outweighs the slightly lower mass of the 2pc.
I have built several MHX 905's, 904 and 1004 and they are my favorite rod blank - they cast beautifully.

I use the ST1022-MHX for Coho salmon. The blank is very light and responsive, though I find it's a bit light for fish over 10lbs.
I think the ST1143 will certainly meet your needs and is a very good choice.
