I have a couple of catfish tournament fisherman that would like some rods built. They would like a 1 piece med/heavy 7 ½ foot E-Glass blank. The rods they’re using now are med/heavy casting lure wt. 1-4oz, the line they are using is 80lb Spiderwire and they are using 8oz weight. I have searched some, but did not find what they are looking for in a blank. Any ideas on blanks, guides and set up

Ken, I’m glad you liked the article. You are right it was very frustrating wrapping the tip top without a support of some kind. About 5 or 6 years ago I tried some different ideas for tip top support and ended up with this one. I tried to design the tip top support so it would fit as many rod wrappers as possible. I apologize for the late response; I just got back in town. I also would

I am looking at purchasing a mini metal lathe something around 7 X 14. Most of the work on the lathe will be small items like reel seats, winding checks and butt caps but still would like to be able to do larger items also. I know that the Grizzly, Harbor Freight, Micro-Mark, Homier and Cummins lathes are made in China at the same factory. Some have different features but the parts are interchang

Alex, I used Hankscraft Model E Motors to build my 4 rod wall dryer they are a little expensive around $32.00 each or more but very good motors. There are a lot of different types of motors that will work from $2.00 and up but the cheap motors I got did not last me very long. The Hankscraft Motors has less heat than any other motors I’ve tried. and I never had a Hankscraft motors go bad. I

Over 11 years and 100,000 copies, that’s not bad for a magazine that was only going to last a couple of years from what some people said. They said the magazine would run out of thing to write about. Great job Tom! Lynn Williams

Steve, I would like to thank you for sharing your idea on the Vibronic rods and the handle design, and also your newest handle with everyone. What a great concept. In today’s world people are not good about sharing ideas and I do understand stand why. Because there are people or company’s that will take advantage of you. It’s good to have innovators like yourself in the rod building craf

Joe, Powell rods was purchased by Keith Bryan in 2002, he worked for Powell rods before he purchased the company. Keith also moved the company I think in 2004 to Novato, CA which is north of the San Francisco area. Keith is an avid bass fisherman so he added a line of bass rods. I worked with Keith a little on some bass rods before I moved from California to Kentucky. If you would like to get

Kip, I have been working on this very idea for about 6 to 8 months. I have two guys trying this type of rods right now. The only problem is most people want some type of reel seat, this is what I have been spending most my time on this type of set up. Lynn Williams

Jeremiah, Welcome, There is a lot of information on this board and if you can't find what your looking for just ask. I think all of us started out wrapping and drying rods by hand, the tools and equipment will come in time the main thing is to pay attention to detail when building and finishing rods this is what makes a good builder. There is a article in the library here called Fit and Finis

I think the St.Croix 4C69MLXF & 5C68MXF blanks with Fuji components is one of the best set up for a drop shot rod out there. I have built a lot of them for tournament guys some spinning some conventional casting but I think the best is a spiral wrap. Just lately I got some Castaway blanks that I think will be good also. Check with Bill Stevens or Lance Dupre at Swampland for Castaway blanks

Tony, I started to build my own buffing system but after pricing out the parts I think it is more cost affected to purchase the complete unit. I got mine from Lamar Fishing Company about four or five years ago but not sure if they still offer the buffing system. You can check Penn State Industries I know they have a buffing system. I’m not sure about nickel silver butting system set up and

Scott, I have both type of cork jigs and tried all kind of saws but nothing work very well. Mike posted the information on the Razor saw from hobbylink about a month or so back so I order one to try. This saw works great with both jigs its cuts very clean. “Thanks Mike” I would take Mike’s advice about buying more than one saw their only $4.79 each. Lynn

I’ve been through the Loomis factory and you are right women apply the finish with a brush. It is neat to watch them apply the finish they only spend a minute or two if that long on each rod. There is on touch up or using a flame on the finish the rod is on a 200 rpm finishing machine. Most of the wrapping is sublet out to independent wrappers. Lynn
